American Idol producer admits to season six mistakes
A lot of viewers thought this season's American Idol gave us the weakest, blandest pool of contestants ever. It was a complaint I heard almost daily while blogging about Idol for TV Squad. Producer Nigel Lythgoe obviously heard the same complaint, and he addressed the issue directly during the TCA Press Tour, admitting that mistakes were made.
According to the Star-Ledger, Lythgoe said, "We were so engrossed with the mentors that were particularly good last season, and we focused on their stories and not really on the Melindas. And we didn't know them as much as we knew the Kelly Picklers from the season before."
This is a mistake that Lythgoe doesn't plan on repeating when Idol returns for season seven. He told the TCA crowd, "We always look and tinker with the program ... We certainly do want to increase the emotional hooks for the audience next year, yes. I'd like to know the contestants an awful lot better, and I'd like our top 12 next season to be extremely strong, as strong as the contestants on So You Think You Can Dance are."
I think that besides spending so much time focusing on celebrity mentors, it also would have been nice if we saw more of the good auditions last year, and less of the bizarre. The Bush Baby and Mrs. Big Bird auditions made some of us laugh (and others of us outraged), but they ultimately had nothing to do with "finding the next superstar." And I think the negativity surrounding the early audition rounds also weakened this year's competition, and took more focus away from the finalists than anything else.
But Lythgoe promises changes, and it will be interesting to see what -- if anything -- comes out of it all.
