Goodbye Pirate Master

by Bob Sassone, posted Jul 24th 2007 8:16AM
Pirate MasterIs this really a surprise to anyone?

CBS has canceled the lame Survivor redo reality show Pirate Master. And that's right away, folks. There are still five episodes that haven't aired, so CBS is going to (you guessed it) run them at CBS.com for all you fans dying to find out what happens.

I wonder if this is a rejection of a Survivor knock-off (which would be a good thing), a rejection of Mark Burnett (add to this his failure with On The Lot and so-so response for the latest Apprentice) or a rejection of reality shows in general? I hope for the latter but it's probably just a specific rejection. But we can dream can't we?

Good riddance to another "skin and brawn" reality show. Like "Suvivor", the only reason women are included is to draw in male viewers. At least, unlike the bimbos on "Survivor" these girls showed promise in realizing they needed to "stick together", not vote one another off due to a fantasy that they had a chance of winning the brawn competitions. This show was poorly conceptualized with its Officers and Crew concept. I got so bored with it I would only tune in the last 10 minutes to see who was voted off. I find the comments that the contestants didn't act like pirates (with one notable exception) laughable. Get a life, people, you are playing too many adventure games!

If they had recruited their cast from a biker bar in PA or some rough coastal blue collar bar, they would have had a show. I wanted this show to work but I stopped watching it before they cancelled it because the cast was not in keeping with the concept.

I am such a pirate freak and when I started watching this show I was so excited and loved it right away. Then they switched it to Tuesday nights and I didn't know and forgot to watch.... thank god for computers and catching up. Now I hear it's canceled and I am really bummed! I don't know what I will do with out my Pirate Master Show.
Will there be any more shows at all?

I really liked the show and I am disappointed that they have canceled it. I love anything to do with pirates and this was really a great show! I also like Survivor. I like Pirate Master more though.
It's a shame!

I may be in a small minority, but I loved the show! MY son & I watched it every week, then switched to the online shows once it was cancelled (oh, we happenbed upon that...there was NO announcement...COWARDS). We only knew to do that because we knew we could watch past episodes of "Big Brother" online.. when we though our DVR had failed us...we looked online. Only then did we find our beloved show had been cut short. ITt was not the best show ever made, but it was new & interesting--- not the same old strategies & the same old challenges. Some one said they were disappointed they didnt talk like pirates. Um, okay- I'm sure pirate came up with a 'lingo' before they set out.... lame reason to hate or watch a show. Did anyone REALLY expect them to talk like pirates? The only thing that makes me mad is after all of this CBS isnt updating the sebsite stuff anymore either. CBS may as well face it...for them Reality blows..or at least they do!

It was good to hear others agree with me that ending the show before revealing who won was unfair to those of us who had invested the time to watch and finally get acquainted with the 'pirates.' It was a poor clone of Survivor, but it was ok as a fill-in between seasons. I, too, was a Mole fan BEFORE the celebrity versions. I still am annoyed that Anderson Cooper jumped ship to CNN.

What would happen if we complained to the companies who sponsored "Pirate Master?" At this point I have no idea who they would be as I have erased the old recordings.

"Survivor" starts again in a few weeks! I guess we can survive a few more weeks of hot summer.

I, along with others, were wondering what happened to this show. Also, I have to say that there are many of us out there that thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't quite understand what all the fuss is about as far as all this criticism. If you don't like it, then watch something else. Big deal. I know some of you may not care at all what I think, but I'm going to say it anyway just the same as you have. I was very disappointed to learn that the show may not air again. I LOVED IT! Everybody has their own opinion, so let's here it from some of the show's supporters. Aaaarrgh!!!

I agree with comment #20 as well. Just when you start liking a show the station pulls it. What are they doing?!

I didn't feel that PirateMaster was well executed either, but regardless, I enjoyed having it on. It was a fun summer show, that could be seen by children & adults alike.

Maybe they could have had each team separately, go for the same goal & the ones that figured out the clues & reached the finish in the best time should have received the rewards. I agreed that it was kind of silly that one group would just follow the other and they would all dig for it.

Maybe they could have had a prize cave - where the group that won the challenge could have met and decided which chest they wanted for winning a challenge, or had to dig for a chest. Each chest could have been different...for example one could have gold coins & good meal reward, while another could have had gold coins & rest for a day while the other team works, or another could have just held gold coins, or yet another could have gold coins & a visit from a loved one, or gold coins & an exotic trip, etc.

Anyway...I will miss the show, and was disappointed that they took it off the air.

Good luck Mateys!

I really enjoyed the show and looked forward to seeing more of it. I was really hoping for a mutiny. A reality show is a reality show. Once you have seen one you have seen them all, but I have always had a thing for pirates, mutiny, ships etc. Come one guys, at least finish the last few shows.Let those of us who enjoyed the show find out how it all ends. (PS I think it was really stupid to cancel the show in the middle.)

I tried so hard to want to like this show and I tried at first to just immerse myself into it, temporarily suspending my disbelief in the ridiculous kookiness of it all, and just go along for the ride. But it was so bad! There was no suspense, and what were the rules? The challenges were silly and hard to follow. I don't know why one team just didn't follow the other, since their "goal" treasure always ended up at the same place anyways. None of the players were even the least bit interesting (except creepy Asimith, who creeped me out, and studly Louie, who I think was a major hunk waiting for a haircut). And, as somebody mentioned earlier, there was always this silly "Do they really think they're pirates?" thought going through my head. It was too close to Survivor to survive the comparisons, and too far away to succeed on it's own. Really, really ridiculous idea for a show, and I'm surprised it aired for as long as it did. LOL
