TiVo to launch new DirecTV features and hell freezes over

by Brad Linder, posted Jul 31st 2007 7:00PM
DirecTV TiVoOnce upon a time DirecTV customers who wanted to rent a personal video recorder could get a DirecTV box with TiVo software. Those days are long gone, and not only does DirecTV have a new box, but the newest TiVo boxes won't work with any satellite provider.

That's why it came as such a shock to find out that TiVo has announced plans to offer new services to DirecTV customers next year. The updates will only affect customers who already have the so-called DirecTiVo boxes. Don't expect a new DirecTV TiVo box anytime soon. But the exciting thing is that TiVo hasn't completely written those customers off.

The new services are nothing to write home about, unless you're the sort who just loves to write home about really mundane things. We're talking about adding a "Recently Deleted" folder to the main menu and "Overlap Protection" that will allow you to record two concurrent shows on separate channels. Both of these are features that have been available on non-DirecTV Series2 boxes for some time now.
