Stupid rumor of the day: David Beckham joins Desperate Housewives

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 6th 2007 5:22PM

David BeckhamOh, come on, do they actually expect us to believe that David Beckham and Robbie Williams will play the gay couple of ABC's Desperate Housewives this season?

As Paul mentioned recently, a new gay couple will move into Wisteria Lane this fall. And now Digital Spy says that soccer star David Beckham has chosen singer Robbie Williams to be his partner on the show if it were to ever happen. The site also says that creator Marc Cherry says that Beckham picked Williams over new friend Tom Cruise.

Yeah, OK...

As if an actor at Tom Cruise's level would go on a TV show for a short stint. That's the first part of the story that smells fishy. The second thing that doesn't quite track is that it just sounds like a combo of PR and rumor: Beckham is hot right now since coming over to play in the U.S. and Desperate Housewives has a gay couple coming on the show, so....

Another thing wrong with the web and the printed word, you can't see Cherry laughing as he says "David's keen, but though the obvious choice was to work with Tom Cruise, we wanted someone who matches him in height..."

I don't doubt that Williams could be asked to be on the show, but Beckham?

Why not... it's not like he's busy playing soccer or anything.

Beckham and Williams won't play the new couple on Wisteria Lane--what Cherry apparently discussed is them guest-starring as *friends* of the new couple. You guys can't even get the rumors straight.
