Big Brother 8: Amber cited for anti-Semitic comments

by Jackie Schnoop, posted Aug 9th 2007 9:01AM
Big Brother's Amber should look worriedIt looks like Amber Tomcavage, the infamous crying gal on Big Brother 8 may have some real reasons to shed tears once she leaves the house.

Anti-Semitic comments she made on the live feeds have now hit all of the major news outlets including a televised segment on CNN.

TMZ and FOX are both running stories about the incident. Actually, it was more than one incident. However, I saw the worst one the other night myself as I watched the feeds.

I don't know if this qualifies as show spoilers, but you've been warned ... read on at your own risk!

In the incident I saw, Amber was talking about how nasty New York is. She claimed it was "all selfish Jews who only care about money." She went on to say that she can tell by last names and noses. She tends to automatically know if someone's Jewish and dislike them. According to her, her mother and sister feel the same way.

Uh-oh.

In the TMZ article I linked, there's a comment from Abraham Foxman, the national Director of the Anti-Defamation League, in which he takes great offense. He not only is offended by Amber's statements in particular, but of similar incidents across the realm of the reality television genre.

I understand his concern, but I hope that there's more folks out there like me. When I hear someone on a reality show say something rude, ignorant, hateful or bigoted, it reminds me that there are still people like that out in the world -- folks who judge on religion, color, race, disabilities, and more. It reminds me that we all must be treat other people with respect and an open mind. It reminds me that reality show contestants aren't always the brightest bananas in the bunch. I will never be a reality television "star" but I'll always have a fantastic diverse group of friends and enjoy the differences in the human race.

I'm just wondering why amber have to look on the camera and say her prayers aloud when it has to be sacred and solemn. i think she just want to show the viewers that she is religious. I almost fell when i heard her one time praying and at the end of her prayrers she said "God bless you God!" I'm not againts her or anything but i hate to see other people use God in her strategy to win!

Barb, can we all please just stop using the 'freedom of speech' thing on the 'net to defend disgusting expressions of ignorance?
First of all, no one is trying to deny Amber's right to say the things she said about Jews. So no freedom of speech is being denied!

On the other hand, if somebody says ignorant hateful things, they are going to be subject to the response and reaction of others. That's called taking responsibility for what you say. That's the responsibility that comes with the freedom of speech you mentioned. It ain't free.

Finally, technically, freedom of speech has limits. Slander and libel are two official CRIMES, for which somebody can be sued. Look them up. They are intentional lies which are defamations of character either in speech or writing. And they are against the law. So, to your freedom of speech, it comes with responsibilities, and it has limits. (inciting violence intentionally is also illegal).

What ever happened to 'Freedom of Speech'. They are just giving their opinion of what they think of other people and races. These people don't have to be so thin skinned. This has been going on forever with no complaints till recently. The white people can be insulted and trashed but - they don't sue. And having one's mother trashed is insulting too. ALL races have had their own comments and should not be punished or sued for saying what they think. If they quit making such a big deal of it, it won't be that important.

bj,

Because Dick's tirade was aimed at Amber and Jameka's hypocrisy - NOT Christianity as a whole. Amber, on the other hand, was disparaging Jews in general. That's a HUUUUUUUUGE difference.

That said, Dick's verbal missiles at Dustin's sexuality later on were downright vile. However, that's his strategy now - to cause mayhem and controversy. What makes Amber's comments different from Dick's behavior is that she inexplicably let the whole world know how she REALLY feels about Jews. Way to go, dummy. Good luck explaining that one on the outside.

I'm against racial remarks of any kind but how come this tirade, which was NOT telecast during prime time but which was in the after hours segment, made it into all the newspapers, and the blatant Christian bashing that went on and on during Primetime rated nary a mention.

MRB, WTF...

first of all , Jameka is a Christian yes, I don't know if she is "conservative" she seems to have no problem with gay people, like Joe or Dustin, unlike Kail, who is white and thinks it's a immoral lifestyle choice.

second, just because she's black doesn't mean she hates Jews. That is one racist way to excuse Amber's comments against Jews, to put Jameka in this based on your own stereotypes about blacks.

I think that reality shows bring out the worst in people, especially if they are trying to stand out on the show and be remembered. I also think that the people who produce these reality shows are willing to let this kind of thing happen, to increase the ratings by increasing the controversy. The reality is that I, as a Jewish person, can laugh at some of the stereotypes about Jewish people, but I am also more sensitive to comments that indicate other peoples' ignorance and prejudice. I know that I'm not perfect either, and I need to work on my sensitivity to other peoples' feelings when I state my opinions. Apparently there are several people who wrote comments on AOL about Amber. Several of those people apparently agreed with her anti-semitic comments and threw in additional anti-semitic thoughts that were offensive to myself and my mother. It is very upsetting that AOL even allowed those comments to be viewed. On the other hand, although I thought that times have changed and people are more enlightened, I have been proven wrong. My mother is upset enough that she would like to start a boycott on AOL. Any thoughts on that?

I think I messed this up the first time - let's try that again...

Bill,

"Jameka...as a strong Christian has behaved in a manner that can only be classified as dignified and respectful."

Are you kidding me? She plays the same game as everyone else. The difference is, she tries to hide behind the cross and claim some sort of ridiculous moral high ground. If she were such a shining example of Christianity, would she be acting like the following? (caution: strong language)

I think maybe you should just turn the other cheeka, Jameka. No need to insult Dick's mom. Rise above it if you're so much holier than the others.
