Lie detector game show coming to FOX

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 10th 2007 4:01PM

Fox logoWho would agree to be given a lie detector test on national television?

Well, we'll find out in a few months, as FOX will air an American version of the hit Colombian game show Nothing But The Truth. Basically, the idea is this: a contestant is hooked up to a lie detector. He's asked a series of questions, and if he passes, he wins $50,000. If he doesn't, he has to face the wrath of friends and family backstage regarding what he lied about.

I'm sorry, but this sounds kinda lame. I can already predict that viewers will think that the lie detector isn't an accurate measure of whether or not someone is telling the truth or not (studies have shown they aren't 100% accurate). And why would anyone go on TV if their secret is so horrible that a buzz from the lie detector would make family and friends get mad? Is $50,000 enough of a seduction?

Of course, I shouldn't even ask anymore why people go on these shows.

Okay, so we go to extreme levels to entertain our public. Although this may not be the best game show idea ever heard of, I would certainly rather watch this, than get depressed watching the news on how many people died last night, and what major new health outbreak everyone has to be on the lookout for. To me, viewing game shows or sit coms, they can evoke a laugh or two rather than create additional stress in our lives. Sonia

Polygraph machines are bogus science, which are why they are inadmissable in a court of law (in the United States, at least). Despite use by the CIA, a polygraph machine has *never* 'caught' a spy, for example.
"Reading" a polygraph is highly subjective - it's no better than a crystal ball, and the tests are easily defeated (which also means you get false positives).
I'm afraid such a show will just tend to promote the mistaken believe that a "lie detector" machine really works. More bad science... :(

That show is awful, the questions are way too serious and it reeks like fake... The structure is something like this: 6 questions -> 1 million pesos, 5 more -> 2 million, 4 more -> 5 million -> 3 more -> 10 million, 2 more -> 20 million and the last one 50 million pesos but you could wreck your life going up to that, for example one 20 million question that i remember was if a married guy had sex with another man for money... in front of his wife and kid...

MTV has had a dating show with a voice stress analyzer for a while. Can't remember the name of it.

Pretty funny at times.

Of course, only FOX could come up with such an idea. Why am I not surprised. Only thing is, this being a game show, I'm kinda surprised they didn't steal it from another network who pitched it first. Granted this is a foreign import, FOX has a tendency to steal ideas from the rivals, then rush to get them on the air.
