Big Brother 8: PoV Competition #6

by JJ Hawkins, posted Aug 15th 2007 12:27AM
Dick looks smugly at his advesaries.
(S08E18) This season of Big Brother has given me a serious case of bipolar disorder.

With the exception of Amber, who I've pretty much despised the entire way, it feels like I can't make it from one episode to the next without having wild shifts in who I'm rooting for and who I want to get evicted from the house.

The party most responsible for my waffling is without question the Evel one. I started out the season loving his honesty, found myself hating his cruelness, but now find myself rooting for him again after he went kamikaze on Dustin, Jameka, Eric, and Amber in an effort to save his once estranged daughter.

I don't quite understand how I can like this guy. He's a brutal human being, and he's said some of the most vile things I've ever heard uttered on a reality show, yet I'm going to be sorely disappointed if he goes home this Thursday.

The guy is a complete anomaly who can spout pure hatred in one scene, yet lovingly remind his daughter to take her vitamins and offer to chop them up for her if she finds them too large to swallow. (Does he also cut the crusts off of her sandwiches, cut up her meat, and put her favorite beverage in a sippy cup?)

Perhaps I'm not the one who's bipolar. Maybe it's actually Dick. Whatever the case may be, he's been the most entertaining figure this season and it's going to turn into a really boring show when and if he's finally evicted.

On with the show.

I'm not entirely sure who Jen's allegiance lies with at this point in the game, but she's trying pretty desperately to fit in with the group formerly known as the Late Night Crew. Case in point, she barged into the HoH room with Jessica and Eric even though she wasn't invited. Jessica didn't have the guts to be rude and tell Jen to leave, but she wanted to.

For the most part, the next 20 to 30 minutes revolved around Dick doing his best to execute "operation self-destruct." His modus operandi?

"I not only have to get the five to hate me, I have to get the five to despise me."

Dick bangs a lid over Dustin's head.

Some of Dick's antics:

  • Dick proceeded to bang a metal lid over Dustin's head in the wee hours of the morning.
  • Said to Eric, "You are a disaster on two legs. You're the biggest liar and manipulator. You will be joining me soon in sequester. Don't you want to kick my ass right now, all 50 pounds of you?"
  • Said to Amber, "You are one ugly bitch. I promise on the life of your daughter that I am going to make you so miserable every [censored] day."
  • Dick basically ridicules Jameka's religious views, says he's a better Christian than her, and mocks the magic ping pong balls again.
Dick did everything but drink a gallon of water and urinate all over Eric, Amber, Dustin, and Jameka's personal belongings, but I'm pretty sure the thought crossed his mind. Evel Dick has gone completely insane - there is no debating this.

Power of Veto Competition - Shot for Shot

Jessica pulled Jameka, Danielle pulled Dustin. and Dick pulled Zach. Eric was the host.

Initially, everyone who played was separated into different areas of the house until they were individually called into the courtyard.

The PoV competition came in two parts. To begin with there were 10 cups of varying substances scattered throughout the yard. The contestants had to go to each station and drink the substance that resided in the cups.

Jameka chugs bacon, eggs, and OJ.

The substances ranged from relatively benign things like maple syrup to hideously disgusting beverages like a pig ear, pig feat, and ham concoction which could be the reason Jessica is spitting out her lower intestine in the screencap below.

Jessica spews.
If the player was able to finish the entire drink they were awarded a point that could be used later in the contest.

Zach ended up drinking three, Jameka drank four, Jessica ended with five, Daniele gagged through seven, and Dustin and Dick both downed all 10 like they were shooting Patron.

The contestants used the points they were accumulated to play a giant game of croquet. For every ring the croquet ball made it through, the contestants were awarded a single point, with a final point being awarded if the ball hit the peg. There were four rings and one peg making the maximum score that could be achieved with a single stroke a five.

The scores:

Zach - 6
Jameka - 10
Jessica - 17
Danile - 20
Dustin - 32.

Here's where it got interesting. Dick managed to score 28 points with his first nine shots and basically had to make it through all four rings to tie and make it through all four rings and hit the peg to win.

With a clutch shot that would make Tiger Woods proud, Dick scored a five and edged out Dustin to win PoV by a score of 33 to 32. I admit to being on the edge of my seat during this sequence.

Dick wins!

Dick gave a resounding "Thank you Jesus!" and went back in the house and almost immediately started chastising Eric, Amber, Jameka, and Dustin some more.

This caused Jameka to decide that Dick is "Satan in the house." I'm sure he relishes the title.

Daniele breaks.

Finally, Jameka ended up making a comment to Daniele regarding religion which caused Daniele to "strategically" confront the house regarding the way they ostracize .

Daniele's argument was that she finds her dads actions deplorable but that they really don't have anything to do with her. She also brings up the fact that no one else in the house is in her position. Dick will always be her dad inside and outside of the house.

She made some valid points and seemed to make some headway with the group. Jameka even apologized to Daniele about the religion comment. Once again, Daniele has proven to be a shrewd player. She's at least attempting to get in good with the house should her father leave and I think that's a smart play.

America's Player

America chose Jessica as the person Eric should give the silent treatment to. He failed for the most part, but his excuse of seeing the medic, coupled with a seed of doubt Jen planted in Jessica's head about Dustin caused Jessica to go into complete paranoia mode.

PoV Ceremony

Dick shoots at the photos.
Dick decided not to use the veto on himself and elected to take his daughter off of the block.

Jessica put up Dustin in Dick's stead.

If America is anything like me and found themselves hating Dick's presence in the house, he may have actually won back some fans tonight by making the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter. This could end up having a huge impact on this week's eviction.

If Daniele and Dick can somehow sway the vote of Zach and Jen in Dick's favor, I think there's a huge likelihood that America's vote (via Eric) may go towards getting Dustin kicked out of the house. Dustin is way to cocky at this point, and we all know that overconfidence has a tendency to lead to a player's demise. I pray that this is how it plays out. I can't bear to look at Dustin's chest for another week.

Who is going home?

Dick270 (36.8%)

Dick was way too funny....when he won the POV! PRICELESS! Dustin's expression was priceless as was Eric's.......! Also, I think Danielle is a great player, and it must be hard for her because of all the things her Dad says and does, but that's not her fault! He is what he is! He's playing a game and he's trying to save his daughter from getting evicted. And as mean as he's being he is probaly the most out spoken person(& loudest) ever in the BB House! I really hope the eviction gets messed up and Dustin GOES BYE-BYE! that would be really FUNNY!

I'm really hoping Dustin is voted out this week, for no other reason than to see the expression on his face, and the face of the others, when the realize, yet once again, someone flipped though vote and did not vote with the rest. Should make for good TV.

As far as Dick, I disliked the guy, liked the guy, disliked the guy, and liked the guy again. I respect his ability to be straight forward with everyone, but I'm not crazy about his ability to be mean to people. Then again, he's just playing the game.

Danielle doesn't bother me in the least.

Zach, I thought was odd, but he's proving to be a smart player, flying under the radar.

Jen I disliked at first, but she's growing on me.

Jameka and Amber have both gotten on my nerves, so I wouldn't mind seeing either go.

And Dustin has gotten way too cockey, so I don't mind seeing him go either.

At any rate, even though everyone in the house has flaws, right now it's still worth watching, and how everything can change from week to week, is what is making the show interesting.

Everybody gets mad at Dick for his comments, but nobody has said anything about Eric's incest comments towards Dick and Daniele. They go beyond anything Dick has said.

So, thandi, you decide to analyze us analyzing them? I suppose we can ask you to stop your bitching and let us do what this TV Squad intended us to do. Just in case you don't know: To keep this blog interesting by having bloggers share their opinions on each episode and the performance of the houseguests.

Hey, Dave. Why are you such a typical left-wing a**hole?

I've liked Dick to a point. The general concept of putting things out in the open which he does a lot is a potentially interesting concept.
But this week is the week where I really want him gone.
I'm Christian and so personally am offended when he mocks people's faiths. (I also don't like CBS playing Church music when Jameka is sincerely praying her heart out. I may not always agree with what she believes, but so what? When she is doing something based sincerely on what she believes, I respect that.) But I also think that people who aren't Christian or religious should at least respect people's beliefs. Just because someone is more open in their faith doesn't give other people who aren't the right to act like these people are worse then they are for doing bad things.
I also really dislike Dick's anti-homosexual comments thrown at Dustin (calling him "princess" all the time and whatnot). Just as I don't like people getting written off because they believe different things then someone else, I also don't like people being called hateful words because of their sexual orientation.
I know the old phrase "it's just a game". But while I think people are going to behave differently then they might outside of a reality show, that doesn't mean that people in such a situation shouldn't be adhering to a decent level of respect.
I also don't like how we view this as "good TV" because that to me makes it sound like we're saying it's just something to entertain us, and yeah, it's supposed to be entertaining, but it's not fiction and while we can always turn the channel or hit the off button, the people living in the Big Brother house will still be living with a man who's crossed a lot of lines.
So while I think Dick can be a good person, of course, and while in theory his strategy of being more forward with things could be a good one, ultimately I see him as a man who whose behavior is inexcusable, full of pointless slams against religion and jabs at a person because that person is gay.
It's hateful, horrible stuff and it seems to me like it would be a nightmare to live in a place like that.
Get rid of Dick.

Adios.

Brent -- you think Dick's behavior is just strategy? I don't. I think he's a real-life abusive *hole who's using the format of "Big Brother" (and the encouragement of the producers, who hide his darker side in favor of a "good father" edit) to unleash his very worst impulses. And there's something genuinely messed-up about the way Daniele, who knows exactly how bad he is, seeks to benefit from his abusive behavior while complaining about how the same behavior has affected her.

This is a game, but it isn't chess. It involves people actually interacting with each other in ways that can be good or harmful. What happens when Dick actually hits someone? (You don't think that's going to happen? The screaming profanities in people's faces, dumping drinks on people's heads, will just stop there? Well, maybe it will -- for now, seeing as he knows he's on TV. But this isn't the behavior of someone who's just playing a game.)

There's something bad going on inside both Dick and Daniele's heads that has nothing to do with trying to win money.
