Damages: Tastes Like a Ho Ho

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Aug 15th 2007 7:41AM

Glenn Close(S01E04) "Trust no one." - Patty

I assume we're supposed to find it funny that Patty, of all people, was the one offering that nugget of wisdom to Ellen. I think what's more amusing is that Patty herself doesn't adhere to her own advice. I actually believe that Tom entertaining Martin's offer may be the first thing in this show that's gotten by Patty. She's so involved in the Frobisher case and views Tom as such a loyal puppy, that I don't think she'd ever see this coming. Of course, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if she did know all about it. Hell, she let Katie perjure herself just so she can blindside Ray with an even bigger bomb-shell. Gregory is deeper than we thought.

Well, I shouldn't say that. Of course he has some involvement. Why else would his character exist? Now we have an idea though. He's been in bed with Frobisher and his broker from the beginning. For whatever reason, Greg owned some of Frobisher's stock and then pulled a Martha Stewart days before Frobisher went on his little spending spree. One answer... far too many new questions.

He played Katie. Fed her bogus info that he had been fed. He even lied about being married simply as a front because it added to Katie's devotion to him. It was another reason to keep her mouth shut. So who's this guy Greg has been meeting with? I think he's the broker. Which makes me wonder why Greg brought Katie back to what must have been the broker's home in Palm Beach. If it was his home, or a rental, or whatever... why did Greg have a key? Is there a family relation? Son? Nephew? Third cousin, twice removed? If so, why couldn't Patty and Tom uncover something as simple as a family tree? I hope my gut feeling isn't right because something tells me the answer to all this is going to be far too convenient. That'll be a disappointment.

The next issue though? We know Greg's value now. Katie was the link to him and now she's skipped town. So how does Patty get Greg on the witness chair? She knows he owned the stock and got a tip, so I suppose it should be just as easy as blackmailing him like Frobisher's people are. Speaking of which... who's baby was the broker pushing around? It couldn't have been Katie's. She had the abortion (we think) and even if she didn't, that kid was definitely younger than four years old. It seemed as though he waving the kid in Greg's face as some sort of reminder.

I'm just glad the show got back on track. We can honestly just forget about last week's installment. It really added nothing. This time around we got some good stuff and more to look forward too. We know how the engagement started to fall apart since David is getting friendly with a patient's granddaughter. That and he's pissed at Ellen about Katie's predicament.

I think I'm most excited about Tom though. I get the feeling he can be vindictive. He's grown to hate Patty and that's bad for her because he knows everything about the case. If he takes Martin's offer? I think Patty might have a big "screw you" in her future. She's treating Tom like crap, so what's stopping him from spilling what he knows and getting the clients on board with Martin's firm? It'll be an easy choice especially if the zeros start falling off the offer as Ray commented. If that happens, who knows what Patty's next move will be.

Do you think Patty will be able to get Gregory on board?
Yes, because he fears for his life.100 (72.5%)
No, because despite his lies, he saw how Katie was treated.38 (27.5%)

Well, ho...ho...ho!!

Ha ha, great piece.

"I think things revealed in last week's story are important will figure more importantly later in the series..."

You know...I've had that feeling the entire season, so far?? I literally take notes! Hopefully, all of my hard work pays off in the end.

Does anyone know the name of the song played at the beginning of episode 5, where Katie is partying at the club in Palm Beach? I love it and love the show!

The best thing about this show is that it really feels like every detail they reveal means something, like the show actually has somewhere to go with the story.

Kind of like the first season of "Lost" felt.

I'll stick with it until it strays from that...

Wow. I think I'm about to bail on this one. First, there is too much going on...way too much. Next, the real TV season is about ot start, and all my new show love is being saved for The Bionic Woman.

episode four was the exact opposite, with a manic number of plot twists and new story threads being introduced. it felt to me like the writers don't have complete control over the story and the central narrative, so they're throwing in as many things as they can think of to keep us guessing. i find it a bit fatiguing rather than engrossing.

my hope is that this show will find its feet, because i think it has quite a bit of promise, but first i'm just hoping they put a little time into cleaning up the narrative mess they've created>>

I agree...I think this will be one of those things that, if you rewatch it again later, you'll find all sorts of red herrings or plot threads they dropped because they led nowhere or didn't make sense. It's as though the writers don't know where it's going, so they throw stuff in there just for the sake of throwing it in and appearing to be "mysterious" when really, it's just plain nonsensical.

However, I'm hooked! It'll be interesting to see if it all comes together. Why would Frobisher try to kill Katie (if indeed that's what he meant when he said "Do it") if she really knew nothing and had nothing on him? So why did he back her restaurant?

The song was "Girl Just Want to Have Fun" -- but not sung by Cyndi Lauper (obviously).

I still like the show, though I have to admit that that mess called "Lost" has me wary of any show which requires too much of a long-term investment. So often, with the exception of "The Wire", it seems like the writers have to fill 20 hours of programming, but only have about 5 solid hours of ideas.

Also -- i dunno, it takes a lot of (something) to assume that a) you can hire the young lawyer, b) draw her close enough so that she delivers her sister-in-law, who will c) deliver the boyfriend whom she things is really married. Can anyone be that talented?

Okay, so I'm crazy about this show. I love the depiction of the ubber powerful at war with one another and simultaneously unable to absolutely control and enjoy the best and simplest things in life--their families and loved one's--without pulling the world down on top of them and others in the process.

Hewe's inability to genuinely love (and/or demonstrate) love for her son, and Frobesher's (sic) zeal to buy his children's future reminds me of the genius of the Soprano's finale--the oxymoronical notion that the Soprano's wanted their son to grow up and be a man, but they wanted to protect and shelter their little baby boy and keep him out of the war in .... wherever. They bought their way out of their son's harms way.

All that said, what is that fantastic song that played at the end of episode No. 4, Tastes Like a Ho Ho ... will someone please let us know. - thx, Bo

i really liked the first two episodes of this show, but i've been disappointed by the last two.

episode three was rather boring and plodding.
