America's Got Talent: Season finale
(S02E11) After a summer long of talent search, performances, and wondering why Boy Shakira and Kashif made it so far in the competition, we finally learned who was crowned the winner of the second season of America's Got Talent. Last week, the Top 4 performed after which America was asked to vote for the winner. The predictions I made last week and the results of our TV Squad poll are the same. Here is how we see tonight's standings to be: - 1st place: Terry Fator
- 2nd place: Cas Haley
- 3rd place: Butterscotch
- 4th place: Julienne Irwin
If you don't want to be spoiled as to who won the grand prize, stay away from the rest of this post!
After the required quick recap focusing on the Top 4 and Jerry introducing the judges, the last four contestants made their way to the stage. Then, we were treated to yet another recap, this one featuring scenes from last week.
Top 10 performance: The Top 10 is brought back to the stage by having the singers amongst them sing "Celebration" and the others perform their craft. It was interesting to see them mesh together and the performance was not too bad even if too crowded (especially because of the AGT dancers!).
Butterscotch: She performed with 17-year-old sensation Sean Kingston. Together they sang "Beautiful Girls," Kingston's #1 song. Did they use a track featuring some of the singing and the music on it? No matter the answer, I thought the performance was not real enough. Sadly, Butterscotch wasn't featured enough in the performance. We didn't hear as much of her beat boxing as I would like because the rest of the song was playing too loud. After chatting with both performers, Jerry warned Butterscotch that he had a surprise for her: her grand-mother taped a message to her wishing her luck. It was a touching moment and a nice way to wrap this up.
Terry Fator: He performed "You've Got a Friend" with Kermit, the frog. A very fitting choice since there are no ventriloquists renown enough to perform with Terry. I'm a bit biased since, as you know, I've been rooting for him since the start. So, as expected, I enjoyed this performance a lot and thought they did well at giving the two puppets and Terry enough screen time. It was hilarious when they added the chicken as back up singers. Having the judges replaced by some characters of The Muppets was very funny! (I wonder if they would have let Boy Shakira and Kashif go through.) Terry's special message was from Miss Piggy.
Julienne Irwin: She performed with country music artist Taylor Swift. I'm glad they paired her up with a country star because it is the type of music that best fits Julienne. Together they performed Swift's hit song "Teardrops on My Guitar." Their voices really mixed well together. This was a sweet performance from both performers. Julienne's special message was from Martina McBride wishing her luck and telling her she has a promising future.
Cas Haley: He performed "Red Red Wine" with United Kingdom's band UB40. Nice performance but I thought it missed some energy. The show seems to have problems with adjusting the microphones or something tonight because in this performance we mostly heard the keyboard and Cas' voice and less of the rest of the band. It was a very nice pairing again tonight. Cas received a special message from Lionel Ritchie telling him he got talent (I wonder if Lionel really watched the entire season as he claimed in his message).
Before announcing who finished in fourth place, Jerry introduced the Last Comic Standing host and invites people to watch the final episodes of this other NBC series. We are then treated with a performance from last year's contestants Quick Change.
Quick Change: Even though their act is pretty much always the same, I'm always amazed at how the woman changes her hair and dress so fast. Nice twist this time, the man changed his clothes too (maybe they did it last season... I didn't watch all episodes last year).
The required montage featuring the judges during goofy and ugly moments was next. Another way to stretch the show and make us wait longer.
The Top 4 is brought back on the stage and Jerry told them that someone's dreams would end here (I think not because all four probably got deals lined up already). Jerry announced who was safe: Terry Fator, Butterscotch, and Cas Haley. So finishing in fourth place is Julienne Irwin. We called it last week people. They aired a montage featuring Julienne and Jerry gave her flowers.
Stomp Out Loud: It's moving day for the Stomp Out Loud crew as they used boxes as their main instrument in their rhythmic performance. Being a musician myself (not professionally, mind you), I'm always impressed by these types of performances.
Before cutting down the Top 3 to 2, Jerry said hello to Boy Shakira and Kashif who are, as I'm sure most of you expected, in attendance. Jerry announced who moves on to the Top 2: Cas Haley and Terry Fator. This means that Butterscotch is finishing in third place. Again, we called it. Jerry introduced Butterscotch's highlights clip and then gave her flowers as he reminded her she has talent and should save the tape of this show.
Jerry introduced yet another montage (I know this is to be expected in a finale show, I guess I was just eager to know who won). This time it was about some of the worst performers who auditioned.
Audition all stars performance: I guess people wanted another 15 minutes of fame because some of them should have known better than to come back on the show and be ridiculed once again. Even though it was not pleasant to listen to (except for the sax player who deserved to go further than he did), the performance was fun to watch.
The Hoff: Did we really need a performance from The Hoff? I guess we did. I didn't expect much from him since I recalled some of his singing performances from years ago. His singing wasn't as bad as I expected it would be but it wasn't great. His performance was cheesy (his facial expressions and movements reminded me of soap opera acting). If he had been a contestant on the show, he would have never made it to the Top 4 with that performance. The song was fitting for the Top 2 as it is indeed their moment. The Hoff's performance was followed by a montage about the overall season.
Jerry introduced the Top 2 and let them know that last year's winner, Bianca Ryan, taped a message for them. The recaps of both performances aired before the winner was crowned. And the winner of America's Got Talent is... Terry Fator! YES!!!! We predicted the entire Top 4 in the order they finished! Our crystal balls were working really well. Congrats to Cas Haley, who finished 2nd. He did really well throughout the summer and he'll surely get a record deal pretty soon.
Terry Fator not only won a million but will play at a theater in Las Vegas. Congratulations to Fator who truly entertained us all summer and showed us how a terrific entertainer he is.
