Feel uncomfortable? Curb returns on Sept. 9

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Aug 23rd 2007 12:03PM

Larry David

Despite the misleading title to Curb Your Enthusiasm's fifth season finale ("The End") the show is far from over. Larry, Cheryl, Jeff, and the rest of TV's most inappropriate clan return to HBO one week after the season four finale of Entourage. On tap for this season? Cheryl convinces Larry that they should adopt an African-American family that's been displaced by a hurricane, Larry envies the anonymity of Ted Danson (I wonder if Damages will be mentioned), and Susie says the "F" word... a lot. Lord knows what else they have in store to make us viewers feel violated simply by watching. Guest stars will include Danson, his wife Mary Steenburgen, Curb regular Richard Lewis, and Vivica A. Fox. Season six premieres on Sunday, September 9 at 10PM on HBO with the episode "Meet the Blacks."

Am I the only one who thinks "The Black Family" does not add one good thing to the show? Have they just run out of ideas? In previous seasons, Larry would never have allowed Cheryl to convince him to bring in a family from LA to live with them and pay for their children to go to expensive private school especially after the mother burned down their house.

What happened to Larry? He used to be a hapless guy, luckless and unsubtle, who through unbridled frankness and pure coincidence wound up insulting or arguing with just about everyone outside his inner circle. A hopeless, lovable loser. Yet lately, he seems like a jerk. Gone is the cluelessly and inadvertently rude Larry. And, in his place is the smart aleck, nah-nah-nah nah nah Larry. He's funnier when he means well but things go wrong. Not when he's proactively rude or mean.

I'm really looking forward to season 6.

CYE is probably my favorite comedy of all-time . . . even better than Seinfeld . . . because you can say "Fuck" on HBO.

I'm happy to see CYE return, but hasn't the show been gone for about 2 years now? I never thought it would be back.
