Here's the Kid Nation contract that CBS had parents sign

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 23rd 2007 4:05PM

Kid NationThe other day we told you about one of the parents of a Kid Nation kid filing a complaint with New Mexico officials, alleging child abuse and unsafe conditions during filming. But just what kind of contract did these parents sign to get their kids on the show? The Smoking Gun has the answer.

As TSG summarizes: "parents of minors in Kid Nation, the controversial new CBS reality show, signed away their rights to sue the network and the show's producers if their child died, was severely injured, or contracted a sexually transmitted disease."

(Sexually transmitted disease?! I guess they were covering every possibility, eh?)

The show focuses on 40 kids who are dropped into a New Mexico town/stage where they have to band together to create a society for themselves. One of the interesting parts of the TSG story is that the original title for the show was The Manhattan Project. I guess that name didn't go over too well. The show premieres September 19.

I think most kids could learn a lot about others and themselves when given the opportunity of freedom to express and learn. I know my 10 year old would be nervouse about doing it (mostly because it's hard work for somebody who loves video games) but he also embraces adventure and some children like him could really use the boost in self confidence. I think it's a great idea. I'm all for helping children learn the meaning of life and self worth. To have experiences that they can look back on and say... well, I did that, I can definately do this! Self confidence goes a long way these days. Cudos CBS

I completely agree with Fabrice. I believe this show has the potential to show us adults, that at times we do not give children half the credit that they deserve. Children have the insight and capacity to make mature decisions when they have to and unfortunately at times we as adults deny them this right.
I believe this show is a brilliant idea, however, I do wish that the producers of the show would've thought more carefully about the incidentals. Going to New Mexico with no children endangerment laws was a pandora box waiting to be open. Of course parents will begin to talk about the hardships; but the ones that suffered while they were drinking their Latte's and watching tv at home were the kids. These paretns who are now sueing deserve a class on proper parenting and READING contracts before you sign them.
I do hope that this show continues to air, it would be interesting to see the choices that children make and why.

I agree it's no worse than sending your child to camp. There are camera persons and producers, etc. all over the place. They are not "alone". My god, what hope is there for children if they aren't allowed to grow? Some of these parents are a wee bit over-protective. As parents, your job is to assist your child in becomming independent and to make sound choices. Sounds like some of you have no confidence in your ability or your child's abilities whatsoever. You gonna sit outside their classroom, too? Geez.

some of this stuff on this show is really so dumb i couldn't help laughing. 20 years ago when I was 15, my parents sent me away to Wilderness Survival camp for 3 weeks....my dad said it would build character...

Shoot these kids have it easy, plus they get to gripe, whine, moan on camera. And they get PAID. geez louise!
