Kevin Smith to direct episode of Battlestar Galactica

by Joel Keller, posted Aug 24th 2007 6:22PM
Kevin SmithIt looks like Kevin Smith is really getting his feet wet in the TV business this year, isn't he? Not only did he direct the very funny pilot to the CW's new series Reaper and write and direct the first episode of Heroes: Origins, but it now looks like he will also be directing an episode of Battlestar Galactica during its upcoming final season, as well.

Smith revealed that little tidbit to our friend Angel Cohn at AOL's TV Tattler, where he spoke about how he came on board all three of his upcoming TV projects, as well as a couple of details about his non-TV work. But, for right now, the most important part of the interview will be the details about his BSG episode...

Unfortunately, there aren't many details to tell. All Smith knows is that he's set to direct an episode; he doesn't know what it will be about, because they haven't delivered the script to him yet. But he tells a good story about how the opportunity came about. Let's just say that if it weren't for Reaper, none of this would have ever happened.

As I said, Smith also talks about some other projects in the interview, including Red State, a horror film he's currently writing, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, which will be going into production soon, and My Boring Ass Life, a new book that compiles posts from Smith's blog.

Looks like it isnt happening. MrsRon posted to the scifi boards stating there is a scheduling conflict. Too bad, I was looking forward to it.

I will have to back up bsgfan and disagree with Tim-1. The show is still great. Has never faltered imo.

That's....."the show suffers conspicously in thier absence." (I hate those typos).

Well, I am reluctant to admit, that the show seemed to have lost some steam. It is unfortunate though, because BSG was on it's way to becoming one of the all-time greatest programs ever aired. The abandonment of the shows initial, gritty, tension-filled core plots is more than evident to the loyal fandom. Instead of the star characters getting the lions share of the original plot ideas, we got a lot of focus on secondary characters in some pretty uninteresting episodes.

The show can still go out with a bang if:

Get back to the shows original theme of spectacular cylon/human confrontations. Remember those great cliffhangers? Remember the responses on these posts after the first two or three episodes into the seasons? Well those episodes were examples of the nail-biting drama that defined BSG.

Stay away from the fantasy gimmick. In the original series, when they infused the angels and devils and magic, the show just lost it's credibility as serious science fiction. In this new version of BSG, it would do even worse damage because this version, up to now..could almost be considered drama as a genre.

And most importantly, they must let Grace Park's characters have far more involvement in the series. Sharon and Boomer has been the shows strongsuit throughout, and the show show suffers conspicuously with thier absence.

With respect to #12 post, I totally disagree with the sentiments. I am looking forward to the last season of BSG. The writing has been filling and delicious and not at all predictable. I will miss BSG when it is over!

Not surprising. BG has already completely gone to the dogs. Boy does that show stink now. The worst writing possible.
