Miss Teen USA contestant talks about maps, schools, other things - VIDEO

by Bob Sassone, posted Aug 27th 2007 12:40PM

Miss Teen USA PageantI don't know what type of TV viewer is still interested in beauty pageants. I'm especially confused by people who would tune into this past weekend's Miss Teen USA Pageant. But if the show has more priceless moments like the one in the video after the jump, I might start watching in the future.

It's Miss South Carolina, who tries desperately - and painfully - to answer the question on why so many Americans can't even find the United States on a map. It's one of the great TV moments of the year. Host Mario Lopez must have been thinking about something really sad to keep from laughing.

If you can decipher what she says, please let us know in the comments. I predict she'll have a big future in modeling, or maybe as a model/TV anchor!

Responding to the retired school principal. My 13 year old son just told me that the correct spelling for "redicule" is ridicule; addressing a plurality would be whom not "who". Stop making excuses for the likes of Miss Upton.

Just proves again that american education looks good on paper...but worthless in practice...good luck people...they might say a lot of things about South Africa...but one thing is for sure...our education system provides international history and national history...won't be surprised if we knew more about american history and european history than the average american...and I can definetely find the US and any other country on the map....sadly enough we are copying the worthless European/American academics in school these days...G---E--O--G---R---A---P---H---Y ....look that up in the dictionary if not sure what it means...(Please note: Applying to American citizens only...use an Oxford dictionary for God sake)

And David, comment number 42, shut up. Certainly there are kids like the ones you describe who are mindless and party too much. But just like the generation before (yes, David, stupidity was NOT invited by Gen Y), they will work mindless, low-wage jobs (if the mexicans don't take them all). We need people of lower intelligence to do all the jobs that people with your intelligence (and mine) do not wish to. Thank God for all the people who find challenge in getting your order right at McDonalds or emptying garbage cans into a truck. This does not make us better than them. It makes us fortunate to enjoy the added blessings of prosperity that result from having an edge. There is a flip side, too, that you should remember. Ignorance is bliss, it is not just a saying. They do not realize what they are missing out on and some of the "smartest and wealthiest" people I know are miserable, chasing that American dream, whatever that really means.

Besides, I thought she was kind of cute... ;)

"I am proud of Miss Upton for her courage and I am sorry for the redicule she will suffer due to this ordeal.

...written by a PRINCIPAL??? This shows why our schools are in bad shape. He can't spell ridicule and he was in CHARGE of the school and under no pressure on live TV. That's why we homeschool...

i think what she's trying to say is that the quality of education in america is becoming like that of south africa, iraq and some other asian countries. And america should help themselves and help the other countries as well. Focusing on education shall help the next generation have a brighter future.

// I don't really know the situation of education in south africa, iraq or in other asian countries. I am just assuming and trying to translate her statements.

And with all the things happening in the world right now, almost all the country's wealth are funded to weapons and wars instead of education.

Say hello to Gen Y, the dumbest generation in recorded history I would say. She's not an anomaly folks, she is very representative of her generation. All flash and style, zero substance. Both the boys and the girls of Gen Y are pathetically stupid, but the girls are far worse. They really put the "m" in mindless. I have the misfortune of working with a bunch of Gen Y females in my department (they're about 24-25, I'm 38) and they are just like this Miss USA contestant. They laugh and giggle all day, and they talk about the most shallow stupid shit known to man. Every other word is "like." I just want to scream when the three of them get together and yack away about nothing. Ask them a question related to current events, science, math, or history and you will get a very blank look. Unless it has to do with the new shopping mall that opened, or the new guy they have a crush on, they're worthless.

As painful as this was to watch, I'm seeing levels of stupidity this bad everywhere with Gen Y's. Heaven help us all, this is the next generation to lead this country. I can see it now, our next President negotiating a peace treaty with other world leaders, "um, yeah like dudes, we need to be kind to each other and stuff, and like all get along. Oh hey dude, I have that cell phone too, like what kind of ringtones do you have? So cool leaders of the world, do any of you dudes have a myspace page? If so I'll like sign up to be your friend, and you can be mine. Cool dudes, I think this peace thing is going to work out!"

As someone who needs Ritalin to carry a thought from one room to another, I feel bad for her. It was truly awful. She obviously drifted off and then tried to compensate. I am as impressed with her composure as much as I am depressed by the mean spirited, and inarticulate comments left here. Most of the comments are as superficial as they infer that she is. The grammar, spelling, punctuation and general usage of the English language, as represented here, should motivate each & every American to find a little humbleness & do some self improvement.

Another example of a utterly pathetic American making a complete fool of themselves when given a microphone. Miss Teen indeed.. Are there no academic requirements at all for her to even be in pageant? There certainly aren't any to become president of the US, so I suppose this follows the theme.
She's an insufferable idiot, to be censored rather than anything else. Let her go back to her myopic little world of spiral perms and barbie dolls, and please, for the love of God, keep her out of the media

I have a fence post in my yard that could have provided a better answer than her. She probably couldn't point out her boobs while standing naked in front of a mirror.
