What's on your DVR?

by Richard Keller, posted Sep 2nd 2007 10:01AM

What's on your DVR?The Digital Video Recorder (known henceforth as DVR) is a heavenly, yet evil, device. On the one hand, it lets you record and store shows for easy retrieval. Some models even permit you to record two shows that are airing at the same time. On the other hand, it lets you record and store shows, some of them airing at the same time, that you may never, ever get to watch.

I thought about this as I went through my own list of DVR recordings. Some shows I have on the unit are from the beginning of the summer. Others are items that my wife saves. Still others are those recorded by my six-year-old daughter, who recently learned how to program the darn thing (kid needs to be in M.I.T.).

So, what I wanted to know from you, the devoted TV Squad reader, is what shows you have on your DVR. I'll tell you mine (after the jump) if you tell me yours.

The oldest items I have on my DVR are episodes from the third series of Doctor Who, which I recorded off of Sci-Fi Channel. I have about five of these episodes on my box. I need to be in a certain mood to watch those shows. I also have a replay of Live From New York: The First 5 Years of Saturday Night Live, which was replayed on NBC last week, the most recent episode of Alton Brown's Feasting on Asphalt and a Rachel Ray $40 a Day episode.

My wife has several days of Days of Our Lives saved on the DVR. Like me and Doctor Who, there has to be a certain mood in the house (in other words, quiet) for her to watch the backed-up shows. The kids have some random items saved as well. There are a few episodes of Hi-5 and Hip Hop Harry as well as one or two episodes of Hanna Montana. My daughter did have a copy of High School Musical saved but I deleted it. I can only afford merchandise from one Disney show and HM is it.

So, I revealed my soul to you. Now, it's time for you to fess up. Once you do you'll feel better about yourself.

I dont have a DVR. Yet. I have been using a PC TV card for years though. It lets me pause live TV. I hope I never get to a point where I am trying to record shows that I dont have time to watch in real time. Movies are different, however. They dont usually have commercials in them, and they can be repurchased if the disc gets all scratched up from the 500th time you've watched it. Or you could make multiple copies, but then be suspected of bootlegging lol. I have outgrown collecting magazines, so I dont want to be the guy who has every TV show on file. But I am looking for him.

I have everything from Prison Break, to the CSI's, How I meet your Mother, Cane, Without a Trace, All the Episodes of The Bronx is Burning, since my cousin wrote the book that the ESPN Mini Series was based on. Also Ice Road Truckers is a interesting show, as well as Lobster War's. Finally Vegas is a great show. I cant watch "Live TV" anymore. I wait for them to record, or at least get started then watch so I can FF the commericals. Only Live TV I watch is Sports (Yankees, NY Giants, and Rangers Hockey)

right now, i think: about 5 eps of ninja warrior, this weeks weeds, some expensive vacation thing that was on travel, a few eps of star trek: voyager (always gotta have SOME star trek around...it's like emergency rations), last night's power of 10, attack of the show, and the last few ep's of human weapon.

yep, a nerdy girl owns this tivo.

My dvr on 9-1-07 somehow recorded a corrupt file, according to Dish. I lost everything. So make sure if you have something you consider special back it up. Just thought you should know. It could happen. Hope Not.
Thanks and good luck

We recently caught up on all the "Rescue Me" and "Entourage" episodes but we still have all 8 episodes of "The Bronx is Burning" sitting there. (Part of me thinks we would have watched them by now if the Yankees were in 1st place, but I digress.)

We usually record Letterman, "Numb3rs", and "Curb Your Enthusiam" in season.

Right now, I think we have 13 episodes of Doctor Who on our DVR right now. There's also a few Dead Like Me's, some Stargate SG1 (I'm going to hold off on deleting Unending for as long as I can), Kyle XY, Monk, Psych, Burn Notice, Mind Control with Derren Brown, Who Wants To Be A Superhero?, and I think it's set to record about a dozen episodes of Kim Possible, which is nice because it's a great pick-me-up show. Nothing bad ever happens on Kim Possible. There's also some of my brother's cartoons and things, my dad's old movies and episodes of Saving Grace, and a few other movies. Like both HSM movies, to prepare for the HSM/Plastic!Winchester Theatre crossover (you don't want to know), and, my all-time guilty pleasure movie, Good Burger. It's staying on there until I get back the ten-year-old Nickelodean orange VHS tape I let my nephew borrow.

It seems like a lot of the shows I'm watching this summer took a week off last week. Right now I've got a few movies and an espisode of The 4400.

I just this past weekend got caught up on everything I have recorded over the summer with the exception of the last ep of Mad Men and Throwdown with Bobby Flay - because is was here in my home state (next ep is in my town!)

No longer housed on my DVR and anxiously awaiting the new fall season are: Monk, Burn Notice, Psych, Mad Men (all the other eps), Army Wives, The Closer, Damages, Don't Forget the Lyrics, the entire season of Traveler (should have hung on to this since the cancelled it!) and a couple of random movies
