ABC World News Now anchor laughs during Owen Wilson story - VIDEO

by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 4th 2007 2:21PM

Owen WilsonHave you ever laughed at an inappropriate time? Maybe during a serious story someone is telling or a funeral or a speech by your boss? That's how Taina Hernandez feels.

She was anchoring ABC World News Now with Ryan Owens the night that news broke that actor Owen Wilson tried to kill himself. The two anchors were laughing about something during the break, and when the show returned live Owens started to talk about the Wilson story and Hernandez started to laugh.

I would cut the show a little slack but 1.) Hernandez didn't really try to stop laughing and made light of it when she tried to "move on," and 2.) The segment is introduced with wacky music and narration and the caption at the bottom of the screen says "Poor Owen," which seems a little bit too sarcastic to me. Video (via Best Week Ever) after the jump.

While I understand the issue with respect to time of day and tone of the show and even that they were laughing at something else their conduct was totally unprofessional and insensitive. I mean, come on basically saying "wow it's bad craic that Owen Wilson tried to kill himself, but isn't it just side splitting that he has an uncle Hoe!" For hosts on network televison, no matter what the show, that really is poor.

Yet they never laugh when Nancy Weiner (yes it is pronounced how you think it is) is anchoring on the show.

I agree with what nick and tv junkie said previously.

This is not a big deal at all.

the Skinny is the tabloid part of World News Now where they gossip about celebrities, Taina and Ryan always laugh inappropriateness at the ridiculousness of celebrities (and sometimes filmed segments to put on YouTube to poke fun at particular pop culture news.)
keep in mind that this newscast airs like 4AM in the morning when people are just getting up, so the anchors are usually more relax (like local newscasts) and report less serious news. this is really not a big deal.

Actually they explain the reasoning behind it and it made me laugh too. Hoe Wilson?

There's even an apology in the video.

This is a total non-issue. They were simply laughing at something else that struck them as funny. It's called being human.

My apologies. Those are the overnight folks for ABC News. That "newscast" often is more entertainment than hard news.

Those are NOT network anchors and that was NOT a network newscast.

Owen's Uncle's name is Joe. And their reaction was entirely inappropriate and unprofessional.

The news is mean, I would understand but the bottom captain is terrible. Screw them.

This seems like a case of "Chuckles the Clown" syndrome.
