Whoopi debuts on The View, defends Michael Vick

by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 4th 2007 6:38PM

The ViewSo, let's pretend that you've been given the hosting job on The View (yeah, a longshot, but the way they go through hosts over there you never know). What would you talk about on your very first day?

Whoopi Goldberg decided to defend Michael Vick for his dogfighting. And what logic did she use to defend him? "There are certain things that are indicative to certain parts of our country [the South]...this is part of his cultural upbringing." (I wonder what other activities were part of the South, Whoopi?)

Wow, so that's her defense? Yeah, as if his "upbringing" has anything to do with why he got into dogfighting. When co-host Joy Behar challenged her on this and asked her about dog torturing and dog murdering, Goldberg said "unfortunately it's part of the thing. You're a dog lover. For a lot of people dogs are sport."

Yikes.

Does the View really have to have "the stupid liberal". Why not replace Rosie will someone with character. Whoopi is just the black version of Rosie.I know it's television but come on! Shock value might reward you with ratings but no respect. Whoopi has said some really stupid things over the years, esspecially around election time. This isn't the first time and unfortunately for television viewers it won't be the last. Way to go Barbara, great hire!

To: beior, You make valid points, in your comments, but, though, I absolutely abhor abortion, I also, hate torturing the animals, especiall, dogs. They are supposedly called, "man's best friend." A dog will love you, unconditionally, have been known to lay their lives down, for man. And, for someone like Vick, to watch the torture of animals, is less than human. He is lower than a snake! I saw the View, when Whoopi made that comment, and, with her liberalism, I wouldn't be a bit surprised, if she watched abortions, for sport!!

OMFG already!! Im a Northern girl who lives in the south (South Carolina) and I found it hard to believe how many people do indeed dog-fight and cock fight.. it's disgusting to me personally but I dont think Whoopi did anything wrong.. She was stating her OPINION and was not agreeing with what he did.. just trying to understand his messed up behavior. In case ya'll missed it, thats what the VIEW is about, several hosts giving their views (opinions) on current events... if you dont like it, turn the damn channel. Oh and "OCEAN" get a freaking grip! To fire her over something she said a few years ago, on HBO is just pathetic. I dont care if she did add a ton of profanities to the National Anthem, have you ever heard of FREEDOM of speech. It works both ways... not just what you personally want to hear. Firing someone or making it illegal to say something, is an infringment of her civil rights, and smacks of a communist country. Thank god Im An American. Oh and Vick is an idiot pure and simple, who the hell cares! Maybe if ya'll put half the energy ya have into this blog, we could do something about our government and our troops overseas! There is a topic worth getting made about!

Some people love their pets more than people. I'm still trying to learn how to get-along-with people. I am not mad at Whoopi for her opinion about "culture" and dog-fighting Vick issue. What she is saying is, some Black people see dog-fighting as a sport.

Give me a fucking break..........you would have thought that michael vick had raped and
killed some white woman. He was made out
to be "Public enemy #1" over some damn dogs. Not everyone is outraged over this.
I don't think it's necessarily cultural but I also
don't think it's a felony either. Hell, in some
parts of the world they eat dogs, so don't sit
there and try to convince me that this man is
the most terrible human being around......I am still a huge M.V. fan and I like the NFL just a little less now.
As for all you black people in the south who are so outraged.....do you realize that there
are people who would let a dog stay in their
house before they would let a black person stay in their house................Fuck a dog!

no surprise that Whoopi became the center of this, One thing about the internet all the things "people" really feel will come to the surface. Hell black people aint too fond of Whoopi either but when other people call her out her name it reinforces the fact we're all in this together. I love dogs but let the punishment fit the crime. To take away Mike Vicks lively hood is over kill, Fine the hell out of him and lets move on.

I think the times along with the racism has blown this out of porportion. Whoopie, I agree, dog fighting has been her just as long as slaves. If you are old enough to remember that, get with the times

Cultural or not. It is inhumane, illegal (ie CRIMINAL) and pitiful that anyone would participate in this. I live in Miami and we have the same thing going on here. A man from Puerto Rico was recently on the news and wants to change the law to make cock-fighting legal. His ignorant reason is that this is a free country and he should be able to continue something that is part of his culture. Culturally, the legal age for sex for men is 14 in Amsterdam. Should we change that too? Culture schmulture.

This entire story is blown completely out of proportion. Whoopi was NOT defending Michael Vick. She was offering an alternative perspective. She is NOT saying that he should be excused for what he did because of where he comes from, she was simply stating that in certain areas of the country and even the world, animal fighting is tolerated and more than likely he genuinely did not feel what he did was wrong. That's the problem, people don't know how to listen. THE VIEW is a perfect example of a bunch of cackling hens talking a bunch of nonsense and not listening to each other.
