Californication renewed for second season

by Paul Goebel, posted Sep 7th 2007 1:22PM

David DuchovnyShowtime has decided to renew its new series, Californication for a second season. The decision was made shortly after the series premiered to critical and public success.

The series, which premiered as a companion to Weeds, increased it's viewership each week and was able to hold onto 90% of it's lead-in audience.

Californication stars David Duchovny as a writer trying to keep his career afloat along with his relationship with his daughter and her mother. Since its debut, many critics of the show have decried the many sex scenes and nudity throughout the show.

In reality, the show is a perfect compliment to Weeds which has proven to be a bona fide hit partly due to it's suggestive content. In fact, many people are calling Californication a male version of Sex in the City.

In any case, the perfect teaming of Weeds and Californication has given Showtime its first powerful hour of back to back comedies and with the help of Dexter and the demise of The Sopranos, Showtime may emerge as the dominant pay cable network.

Greatings from Portugal.

I'm a huge californication fan. This season finale caused me two antagonic feelings. By one side it was excellent that there was as happy ending and LOVE won. By other side it was reaaly sad caused it seemed that the most important element in the show (hank fighting for his true love) seems to end.

For next season what would be great was if they did something like " Californication Inverted". The same characters, the same love but now it was Karen who was alone and Moody had a new family. I think it would be excellent to see what would happen if it was Karen in the other side of the barrier. See the world in a feminine perspective. and it would be a great effort to the actors and they could prove there great talent.

I thought the first season was excellent and look forward to owning on DVD. Anyone know of any plans to release it on DVD?

I'm worried that the second season will be less interesting as RSB points out above, a big part was Hank's pursuit of Karen and his losing himself in mindless trysts to ease that loss but hey! I'm not a creative type so I will leave that to the experts!

Awesome show and further further proof (if any was needed) that the only good shows are only the pay channels!

I really love the show and i'm estatic that its been re-newed. Its hard for shows to get a good following with only a couple of episodes. I love every aspect of it, its very refreshing that not everything is going to be censored because people get affended by it and the story line and everything leaves of alot of things unanswered for the next season. So il be waiting for it :D

I am so glad that a second season is being picked up, the sex does not bother me, everything about the show is great. They should not change anything, however I will say that now that Karen seems to be back with Hank, it will not be as anticipated, imo. Half the intrigue of the show was his pursuit of the love of his life, for me at least. Anyways, looking forward to next season.

I concur with you! I am so glad that it has been picked up for a second season....the only reason I logged onto the Showtime website was to ensure that we do not lose anymore great programs to bad critical review! It is such a delicious reprieve from the other crap on television.....it is the ultimate crap....just like television should be....addictive, smart, mind candy!

I could not agree more. The combination of weeds and Californication may well put showtime ahead of HBO for original programming. This show rocks to the max, and I can not get enough of it.

I have loved DD since the X-Files and find him to be charming, funny and smart on this show when he is interacting with his Ex and daughter. The rest of the show leaves me a litle cold. Not thrilled with excessive boob display - in your face is not necessarily better or sexier. Hate the character of Mia - new hubby's daughter - why is she there? Evan Handler is oddly boring. He was so endearing as Harry on SATC. Maybe he just finding his bearings here. And the S&M is just weird. I never watched Weed so I have to make a special effort to catch this show. If it doesn't shift focus soon, may leave it as dead in the water.

Good news. Why isn't the show reviewed by this blog? It's certainly good enough.

Okay Yoda...

Anyways the show was supposedly called a "mini series", but that means nothing, and I think it might have been some legal term crap.

And i like the show, i don't think it's any weirder now than it was 3 episodes before when it primered.
