One last thing about the Emmy Awards ...

by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 18th 2007 3:04PM

Sally Field

So Jay liveblogged the Emmy Awards and we've seen the pictures and debated the winners and losers. But what about those bleeps and cutaways during Ray Romano's standup routine and Sally Field's acceptance speech? Here's the scoop.

A lot of people think that Field was censored because of her liberal views and the war in Iraq. Not so, according to FOX. They bleeped her because of her use of the word "goddamn." It's always been a weird rule on television that you can say "God" and you can say "damn," but if you put the two words together, civilization as we know it will end. People always say that religion is dumped on in the media too much, but I think that in this case the media goes out of its way to please everyone.

As for Romano, was he censored because he said something about "Kelsey Grammer is screwing my wife" (referring to Grammer's new show Back To You with Romano's former TV wife Patricia Heaton), or because he gave away a plot point in the show? The latter might be true. FOX told TV critics not to reveal the show's plot. But seriously, can't anyone who has seen the promos of the show pretty much figure out what the plot is?

I'm more concered with the way that FOX did the bleeps and cutaways. Instead of just bleeping, the changed the camera angle to a completely different view of the auditorium. It looked like closed circuit coverage of some other event taking place in Hollywood, or hidden camera footage. Really strange and obvious.

Umm didnt SNL long ago start using pretty colorful language including penis, bastard, bitch and other explitives that would get the rest of us fired if we use them at work? All of a sudden, network TV gets a conscience about one of the least offensive swear words. I guaran-damn-tee you that if she had gone on a rant about liberals and said "mothers of the world would put an end to the goddam liberals", fox would not only not bleeped her, they would have her meeting bush and kissing laura by now.

I don't want to hear "GD" but I do believe in freedom of speech! It is just disrespectful and she should be aware of her image to the youth of today. To say what you feel should be allowed...but then don't say a word when you are criticized for it.

And the point of view that it is a glitch instead of censorship...interesting. I wonder.

What's with all the hate on Fox? They're doing the best they can to please everyone, because if they don't, more people then just angry internet prowlers will be after them. Live things are always really touchy programs.

I watched the Emmys live on UK television and we got all of Sally Field and all of Ray Romano. Since when did people feel that they had a right to not to be offended?

WHAT?!? Kelsey Grammer screws Patricia Heaton on that new sitcom of theirs? Shocking!!!

Amazing. I watched the Emmys in Brazil, and when I first read about the Sally Field controversy (there's a phrase I never thought I'd say), I vaguely remember her "goddamn" speech not getting bleeped out in the international feed, and now I'm 100% sure they didn't, because I definitely heard Ray's routine in its entirety. I just find it curious that any other kind of programming (dramas, sitcoms) does not get to our networks in uncut, uncensored fashion. We always get the "TV cut."

I love Sally Field in Brothers & Sisters, and not only was I glad to see she got her due, I also thought her heartfelt speech was the highlight of the night.

When will people stop being so goddamned offended by what other people think or say and start being MORE goddamned offended by the real problems in the world? It's okay to have wars, starvation, homelessness, AIDS epidemics.... but say "goddamn" and people are up in arms and having hissy fits.

Grow up. Censorship only blinds you to what is really going on. The more you rely on it to protect your delicate feelings, the more the wold will be censored until all we'll have is government propaganda about how great things are. Just like North Korea.

@Bash -- I found it funny that you censored yourself in your 2nd comment. ;-)

@elf -- Who says we delete guesses at spoilers, correct or not. ;-)

First of all, Sally did admit she probably should not have used the word God in front of the word damn; the joke Ray told was a freakin' JOKE! Of course anything taken to an extreme (racism, threats of murder or terror, etc.) should be censored by network TV. Children are watching. They're also watching half-naked women, horrible grammar, promos for up-coming news, etc. on commercials. Would someone please remember that as parents our number one job is, uh, PARENTING? Thank you.

Actually, in Europe people could get sued. Not because they said "shit" or whatnot, but should they start saying racist things or such, they would, of course.

Not the network though, because it'd be like suing the restaurant where some customer said something you didn't like, makes sense only in america!
