Woo-hoo!

Variety is reporting that American Movie Classics is going to renew the critically-acclaimed 1960 advertising drama Mad Men for a second season. The show is currently nine episodes into its first season.

This is good news for fans (obviously), but I also think its good for television in general. We need a quality drama like this on the air, one with this setting and this sort of vibe. To be honest, I love the show, but I was also getting that antsy feeling that it was going to be canceled after one season, because it didn't get much buzz and was on a cable network that isn't HBO or Showtime or FX. This seems like a renewal based on the simple fact that AMC loves the show and has faith in it, and that's really cool in this age of quick cancellations.

The show airs Thursdays at 10.

I am hooked on the show like nothing before. Besides the news, and Monday night football, this and Cavemen are the only two shows I watch on TV. Cavemen I watch mostly because I personally know one of the actresses. Madmen I love, maybe because I am a child of the 60s, but mostly because of the irreverent humor. The drycleaner plastic -- hey I was a spaceman in 1967 before these things became a problem. Somehow the writing and acting are like a great novel or theatrical play that is brought to life, sort of in the vein of Glenn Gary, Glen Ross.

It's great news. And, like penguin, I have told people about it, and no one wants to start without a proper marathon (apparently they, and I, missed one a few weeks back).

I'm very happy to hear this news! And I also agree with Jim Kosmicki - Mad Men isn't even on your What's on Tonight post - and it's on tonight! It's such a great show - spread the word TV Squad!

I tell everybody who I think might like this to watch it and I generally get the same response: "I'm not sure if I have AMC." This is similar to the response I use to get about FX when I was recommending The Shield way back when. Hopefully this show will put AMC on the map the same way.

so when does TV Squad show it some love and make it a tag? I've never quite understood how some shows like Damages (which I also like) get their own tag right away, but others (like Mad Men or So You Think You Can Dance) that get written up each week, but don't have their own tags.

I'm so glad this show has gotten a second season. I have read things on the internet of viewers who say nothing happens in an episode. I would compare the show to "Ameican Beauty", most of the intresting stuff is internal. The struggles, fears, and insecurites of just about everyone in the show. The things that they wouldn't tell thier spouses, co-workers, neighbors. The kind of insight that only the viewer is allowed. "Mad Men" is addictive.

I just hope the do re-runs of it in the off season, as I've told many others to tune in but no one wanted to start in mid-season.

I'm so glad. I think I just felt a glimmer of faith in television executives... or was that just a little gas..

Anyways, I love the style of this show and everything it is.
