Women from The View debate science, roundness of Earth - VIDEO

by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 19th 2007 12:41PM

Sherri ShepherdIt's 2007. We no longer use leeches in medical procedures, we don't dip people in water to see if they're witches, and television has gone from black and white to color and HD. So why are there still people who aren't sure if the world is flat or round?

I bring this up because of the video after the jump. It's from The View (shocker!), and shows the ladies talking about whether or not new co-host Sherri Shepherd thinks the world is flat. Shepherd, who also doesn't believe in evolution, says she doesn't know because she's "never thought about it." I guess this is the part of the story where I'm supposed to say "everyone's entitled to their opinion," but I just can't in this case.

Prediction: Jimmy Kimmel will be all over this tonight.

God created heaven and earth and all things. You would not be here if it wasn't for God. Read your Bible. Yeah Man wrote the Bible but it was inspire by God. It was like him to taking their hand and writing his words. How do you think you move your hands to write and talk and move.

It is amazing to me that someone with absolutely no knowledge of science is commenting on such a matter. The VIEW is a joke - uneducated and profoundly irresponsible by adovacating such rhetoric.

Sherri Take a MicroBiology Class at a Local Community College PLEASE... Do you even know what a Prokaryote is? Please at least GOOGLE Prokaryote and Evolution together and start educating yourself!!

You wanna see this while it's still up - well worth watching, just for the 'omg' factor.

I second your comments. Couldn't of said it better myself.

Finally, as 'horsenbuggy' mentioned, the Bible does contain multiple references indicating that the world is NOT flat. In fact there are several found in both the OT and NT. Folks whose beliefs are based on the Bible (like Sherry) would do well to read it a bit more, perhaps with a dash of logic.

I want to address two previous comments: while the Bible does not use the exact phrase, "God said to his son...," it does say, "Let us make man in our image." Based on other Scriptures taken from both the "Old" and "New" Testaments, many Christians have come to understand that Jesus did exist in heaven (as an angel) at the time of creation and was a very active participant in the creation process. (Psalms refers to him as a "Master Worker" alongside God.)

I would also like to point out that while the Bible is not a scientific textbook, it does explain that the earth is round. There are at least two scriptures which refer to the earth as being a "circle." The specific Hebrew term that was used in those instances has a three dimensional connotation and is often translated as "sphere." So the "belief" that the earth is flat is not, and never was, a Biblical teaching.

Are leeches still used in medicine? You bet they are - mostly when body parts are re-attached surgically. They "leech" the old blood out of the reattached part so that new oxygenated blood can get in.

Is the Earth flat? Not so much.

Give poor Sherri a break. One questionable comment - probably made because of nerves - does not a stupid person make.

Elizabeth, on the other hand, has been consistently stupid over the years on the View.

I'd like to see how all of you haters would do if you were on live national TV in an unscripted discussion/debate 5 times per week.

Honestly, how can even an only moderately intelligent person go on television and say that she doesn't "believe" in evolution and hasn't "thought about" whether or not the world is flat (as I recall, that was covered in 2nd grade. Did she not make it that far?)? Come on. She and that dumb blond girl are only making the religious extremists look even more ridiculously stupid. Enough. I had some hope for this show when they got rid of Rosie and hired Whoopi, but not anymore. I'll just watch "Dharma and Greg" reruns. Or nothing at all.

Stephen - that is a gross misstatement regarding Christians and those who believe in a God. In fact, it's evidence of poor logic while we're at it. Just because you've met/spoken with/judged some Christians to be ignorant doesn't mean all Christians are, just as I can't say based on one comment from an atheist/agnostic that all are rude and illogical.
Check out famous Christians/Theists like Galileo, Albert Einstein, Thomas Jefferson, Copernicus, Sir Francis Bacon, Mendel, Kelvin ... I could go on.
Sherri Shepherd is evidence of an epidemic across the country, not just among Christians, of a failure to contemplate deeper issues, to embrace science and logic, to aspire to greatness.

This is not surprising. To be Chrstian is to be ignorant. Often the extremely Christian are also extremely ignorant. (When I say "Christian" here I really mean "belief in God").

Whoopi seems to be the only one with any rational thought skills. The other four are stealing good oxygen from the rest of us.

Looks like Elizabeth has gotten some dummy company.

I don't buy the nervous part - I don't think she knew the earth was round.

I guess she never watched a shuttle launch, you can see the roundness of the Earth. Of course she probably belives a shuttle never really launches and it's all filmed in a studio.

"I never thought about it", neither have I, I just know it's fact.
