Bionic Woman -- An early look

by Varun Lella, posted Sep 24th 2007 10:01AM
Bionic Woman Michelle Ryan
When I first heard that NBC was going to remake the 1970s The Bionic Woman, a spin-off of The Six Million Dollar Man, I got more giddy than a schoolgirl with a new Bratz doll -- that is what the kiddies are into, right?

The teaser video for the new Bionic Woman was intriguing to say the least. My first thought was, "Oh my God! This is my new Heroes. " I mean really how could you go wrong in the 18-24 male demo with a hot girl who kicks butt? It is practically like giving a grown-up Claire Bennett (another Heroes reference) her own show.

I heard earlier that Bionic Woman was supposed to be one of the best shows of the fall season ... excitement levels rising. I also found out that I would get to watch the pilot episode of Bionic Woman and get to tell you guys about it ... excitement levels out of control.

So let's see if the show can live up to my own hype.

So if you have seen the teaser or have the amazing ability to guess the obvious, you already know the plot to the show. Basically Michelle Ryan is Jamie Sommers a normal girl who through an "accident" -- I don't want to give any plot points away -- is in need of some rebuilding. Her boyfriend, who is a secret government surgeon, installs some nano-robotic parts and you now have a Bionic Woman. Ta-Da!

The pilot episode did a great job to introduce all the shows main players that will be supporting Jamie in her transition to Bionic-womanhood. Little Lucy Hale, star of the upcoming Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 (did they really need a sequel?), does a great turn as Jamie's angsty hacker kid sister. The opening banter between them is pretty smart and realistic and she will be a great focus for Jamie's emotional side (i.e. when she is not saving the world). Although, I can't help but wonder how many time's she will be captured or used as bait throughout the season ... just remember you heard me call if first.

Also another good character to watch out for is Miguel Ferrer as Jonas Bledsoe, the highest ranking officer in the Bionics program revealed so far. Ferrer is the perfect stern leader with a troubled past who wants to complete his mission at any cost. Ferrer is probably most famous for his role as Dr. Garret Macy on Crossing Jordan, but I remember him as Bob Morton from Robocop (one of my favorite movie deaths ever).

Sans characters, plot, everything, Bionic Woman is still a surprisingly beautiful show. The cinematography and editing, as well as the pacing of the shots, are absolutely outstanding. Although there are shows on cable like Mad Men that have high, almost movie-like production values, it is very rare to see a show that looks this good on basic network television. The action and special effect sequences were also pretty top-notch, but a little shaky. To be fair, what I saw was the working version and the screener said the effect was only a temporary holder for the real effect that will air next Wednesday.

This all brings me to my one main problem with the show ... the lead character. Ryan is a great actress and I find her to be rather hot -- although somehow she looks less smoking than usual on the show. However, it seems like she is concentrating so hard on her American accent -- she is a Brit in case you didn't know -- that she forgets how to act. Her expressions and emotions are all off and she says things in an almost expressionless intonation from time to time. She is being out acted by everyone on screen, including her little sister. This is a big problem for the show. If your main character is your weakest part, the you got some major work to do, no matter how good the rest of the show is.

And it is good.

I haven't even gotten into all the little twists and turns in the first episode. I really recommend on you watching the show and deciding whether or not it is something you are willing to commit your hump day to. If the pilot of is any indicator of how the season will be, get ready for an awesome ride.

Bionic Woman premieres Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 9 P.M. ET.

Terrible writing, acting, character development, plot, editing...I could go on. Worst premiere I've seen in ages. A few (mediocre) special effects and the producers think they've created something worth watching. They didn't even come close.

Having not yet seen Bionic Woman I cannot comment, only to say that I enjoyed her in Eastenders. Maybe the detractors can't understand U.K. English. As an Anglotexan albeit from Lancashire I find it no trouble and I sincerely wish Michelle the very best in her new venture .Fred

I'm in the boat that REALLY wanted to like this. With LOST on Hiatus and The Office being the only other TV show I watch I am searching for other shows. First I'd like to talk about the good points. Miguel Ferrara and that’s it. Now the bad points. Michelle Ryan is like a REALLY REALLY poor mans Jennifer Garner. Take away from that she has NO personality and exhibits NO chemistry with any of her co stars. This show has 0 personality and not a single likeable character.. I really want to watch a show with people that I care about. I can forgive plot/story and believability so long as they have a world full of REAL people with HUMAN plights. This show doesnt even try in these areas since its so concerned with plot twists and being hip. And whats with the sound track? It feels like an early 90's Cinemax film. VERY lame and outdated. I reccommend calling up JJ Abrams OR Joss Whedon to fix this one.. Hell... Mark Cherry would make this a lot more interesting..

Hey, where did she get those bionic high heals?
How else does she do those landings?

I thought the pilot was boring.

Would have been cool if the guy said "that's 6 million dollars we got in you, i'm your land lord" instead of 50 million.

Also, i think bionic woman is kind of unattractive, on the verge of ugly and she looks like she's kind of fat in some scenes.

I've watched plenty of bad TV because of hot chicks. Dark Angel comes to mind.

What hasn't been said? I was disappointed like all the rest. There are parts of it that show promise and I'll give the show a few more chances, but the pilot is supposed to make you WANT to watch the show.

This one failed at that.

As everyone has said, the lead is not very charismatic. I just didn't care about her. Also, why was she so angry about being bionic? That made absolutely no sense to me. Scared? Sure. Mad that you saved my life and gave me superpowers? Not so much.

As for calling the sister being kidnapped, etc, *I'm* calling the sister hacking into the nanites or whatever it is that are making her sister bionic. You know it's gotta happen.

Honestly, though, here's the thing that would have saved the pilot for me. I never did notice that they said Miguel Ferrer's character's name. At the end, when he meets up with Jamie and talks to her, I would have LOVED if as she walked away he said to her, "Oh..by the way...I'm Oscar Goldman." and then she does her walk into the sunset bit.

I saw the pilot on Comcast's Video On Demand.

I was less than impressed.

However, it wasn't as bad as "Flash Gordon."

The beauty of the original was the tragic love story -- The Bionic Woman and The Bionic Man vs The Bionic Man and The Doctor.

And the good guys were just that...the good guys.

I miss those days when it was okay for TV characters to be "good guy" -- to be polite, honorable, capable of love, honest (with a tendency to a few white lies), loyal, a good sense of humor, and a character that if I meant them in real life I could trust and actually like as a person.

Sigh.

"Bionic Woman" is all flash and no soul.

The pilot isn't that bad. Yes, Ryan was quite stiff in this opener, and hopefully when she's more comfortable with the accent she'll loosen up.

Honestly, I really hated Katee Sackhoff. She's great on Battlestar, but in this opener, she ruined the beginning of the pivotal rooftop scene. Obviously, her lines didn't come across well, because you can tell they had her in a studio reciting the lines again and dubbed them over. Still, the scene stinks, and the writing was awful.

Despite that, I have very high hopes for the show, and I've seen some glimmers of brilliance. Hopefully it'll smooth out over time.

Faith was a great addition to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, an "alternate" version of slayerhood, if you will, with a charismatic performance by Eliza Dushku. It worked because Sarah Michelle Gellar had Buffy down perfectly ... Dushku was good, she was given plenty of chances to steal scenes, but in end, there was always Gellar/Buffy.

Katee Sackhoff is at least as charismatic in Bionic Woman as Dushku was as faith. But there's no SMG here. Sackhoff blows the titular actress off the screen, and the imbalance ruins the show. It's not a good thing when you spend all of your time watching a show and thinking "I don't care about this lead character, when is Starbuck gonna be in a scene?" If it isn't clear, I'm a huge fan of Sackhoff, but I don't need this, a mediocre show salvaged only by the occasional appearance of one interesting actress.
