A Simpsons satirical history

by Brad Trechak, posted Sep 25th 2007 2:28PM

Homer Simpson as Alfred HitchcockApparently, someone had some free time on his or her hands and used it to post various stills from The Simpsons episodes which mimic various famous movie or television scenes. Considering that the show has been around for almost 20 years, it's certainly had time to get such pastiche correct.

These stills seem to originate from earlier episodes, back when the naysayers would say the show was good. I admit I don't recognize every Simpsons episode in the list (or for that matter every movie still in the list), but it's easy to tell that the writers and animators were trying to reference the original movie or show for satire's sake.

Of course, the first set of scenes is pretty obvious. It's from an early Halloween special which was a direct parody of The Shining, so naturally there are scene references. I'm surprised they didn't use the monorail episode from early on which parodied The Music Man. Perhaps that was just too obscure. Or maybe the whole process is like trying to pick the best apples out of an entire forest of apple trees.

So which pastiches or parodies from The Simpsons are your favorites?

Yes, I know Treehouse of Horror is the annual Halloween special. I was pointing out that the author was mistaking Bad Dream House from THOH 1 for The Shinning from THOH 6.

Zach... you know that "Treehouse of Horror"-Episodes are airing on (around) Halloween, right?

The first one aired in season two so you can expect Treehouse of Horror XVIII on the 28th of October I guess...

There are three or four more of these out there if you look.

You are wrong about the first set of stills (referencing the Shining). They are from Treehouse of Horror 1, a vignette called Bad Dream House, wherein the house is possessed and tries to get the family to leave. The direct Shining parody (the Shinning) appears several seasons later.
