ABC won't show Cavemen to TV critics

by Bob Sassone, posted Sep 27th 2007 3:40PM

CavemenABC is not showing the retooled and reshot Cavemen to TV critics.

Now, this could be a strategy, a la CBS and Kid Nation, to not show the pilot of a show that has been savaged by critics and the industry, to create buzz, or it could be a matter of not showing it to critics because it's just bad, like when movie studios don't let movie critics screen a bad film before it opens on a Friday.

The original pilot didn't get great buzz earlier this year, and now they've made a lot of changes, which usually isn't a good sign (still can't wait to see how all the changes to Moonlight have left that show). First they changed cast members, and now it's been announced that the lead characters aren't even cavemen anymore, they're robots.

Just kidding. Cavemen premieres next Tuesday at 8pm. Check out the video promo for the show (and other ABC shows that "aren't for chicks") here.

"F" the critics. Too many shows end prematurely because of critics. Give it a season or two. This could be the next Seinfeld.

I think the next headline should be...

"ABC won't show Cavemen"

Make it happen ABC!

I love the cavemen. I think the premise of the show is a hoot. It has the potential to exhibit tolerance through comedy. Anyway, my sister turned to me one day and said, "You know, this is really crazy .... but that caveman who is in the airport commercial with the Geico sign on the wall is really HOT!" LOL

Several weeks ago, ABC did a Sunday night "pre-premiere" episode where they showed clips and gave background on several upcoming new shows (DSM, Samantha Who, Carpoolers, etc.). I'll stipulate that the clips of Cavemen that were shown were pretty funny, but I still can't seem to wrap my head around the idea of a TV show based on those dumb Geico commercials. I'll probably record the premiere and give it a shot, but I've got super-low expectations for this one.

Even if they are in the show, it would be hard for people to really know, since they're always in that makeup. For those who weren't lucky enough to see the pilot, imagine if they remade Good Times with white actors but then decided it needed more zany, sitcomy humor.

I hate to criticize a show without seeing it, but just looking at the actor's "cavemen beards" look fake. So I would think the show wouldn't be that great. The actors might be good, but I would be embarrassed to show off my acting skills based of an insurance commercial. They should have just done webisodes for Geico, and then IF they got a good comments make a tv show. It just looks cheesy to me.

I think I'll give it a chance. I found it insane to create a show based on a commercial, no matter how funny the commercials are. But I saw some clips on ABC and I thought it was funny. Third Rock from the Sun sounded like a daffy premise too when it was first pitched.
