Dexter: It's Alive! (season premiere)

(S02E01) The new season has started and already I dread the season finale, when we'll have to wait through another summer without our favorite serial killer. God, did I just say that?

The opening scene proves that the writers haven't forgotten how to kep with the clever euphemisms for killing, with the "Bowl 'Till You Bleed" bowling team. With Doakes now tailing Dexter (a partial shout-out to how suspicious Doakes was of Dexter in the first book the show's based on), I have to wonder why Dexter has gone so long without raising suspicions in the past. Why now?

Strangest of all is Dexter's sudden lack of nerve, though thankfully (this time) he loses his killer instinct to a blind man. I'm not sure Dex has washed the blood from many slides in the past.

As I mentioned in my Early Look post, Dexter's got a new roommate: sister Deb. Understandable, since it's not every day your fiance tries to murder you and had been the subject of your own work for the past few months.

It also looks like Dexter's sex drive hasn't made any improvements lately, especially when he has a naked Julie Benz all over him. Thanks, HD Showtime! Maybe with poor Paul out of the way he'll get more chances (and so will we).

That guy, "Little" Chino, is a freakin' monster. And to think I thought Doakes was a big sombitch. And just like that, Dexter finds the challenge he needs to get back on his game. I loved that Dex had the foresight to use two syringes to put the monster out. Alas, now that monster has put a face to his almost killer. Dexter is obviously WAY off his game.

What an eerie scene, seeing the 30-plus bags of Dexter victims scattered around the underwater crevice. The Code of Harry apparently didn't consider the odds of having someone discover the body dump so quickly. Is 30 bodies considered quickly?

I always love the flashbacks to a young Dexter and living Harry. It's what gives us some insight into why Dexter does what he does, how he does it and how he gets away with it. And just as Dexter's heart beats out of his chest, as does ours. Ho. Lee. She. It.

Quote of the episode:
Dexter: "Dying? Dad, I don't want to die. I just want to find some way to feel alive."

Will Deb find out those are Dexter's body bags?

Yes, but not this season.268 (54.6%)

I can't comprehend the Unit crossing paths with Dexter... but Dexter puts bad guys away better than Tony Soprano had Paulie put Adria away...

He dumped them into a deep trench. if you go back to the scene where the divers find the bodies, there's the sea floor, then a lower shelf, then a deeper trench. The bodies simply drifted as they dropped and didn't go into the trench as they were supposed to. An earlier scene in the boat showed Dexter with sounding equipment -- he just didn't take into account the drift. And I would guess that even though they found 30 bodies, that it's only a portion of Dexter's body count, as some did make it into the trench as they all were supposed to. I find it wonderfully ironic that Dexter's cleanliness fetish (wrapping the bodies so tightly in the industrial plastic bags) will be one of the factors leading to the id of his victims -- I would assume that that's why they haven't decayed or been eaten by scavengers.

Why would Dexter leave the bodies in the bag all sealed up? Wouldn't it have been better to dump them out of the bag so they could be shark bait and gone for good?

Cody, actually if you read the 120+ page report from the Green River Killer you'll learn that dumping in one place isn't a good idea. One dead body makes for some cops who are interested but eventually the case passes.

Leave several and now the media gets involved and it turns into a mass murder or a serial killer.

Likewise, it seemed he left the bodies dismembered but they still had fingers (prints) and teeth (prints). Again, the guy's an ME but he doesn't take a few precautions to ensure that the dead bodies can't be ID'd? Does he want the police to know the dead are criminals? Perhaps. Just as perhaps he stores them in one location for that reason. Most serial killers eventually want to get caught.

The Green River Killer was unique in that he went out of his way to make it difficult. He staged scenes, left weird clues, did things he wasn't into (necrophilia, cannibalism, etc) to throw off the cops and in general had the cops baffled for over 15 years.

So perhaps Dexter wants to be caught - as is common. Otherwise it's the code. An intelligent person would never dump easily ID'd bodies in the same place. It wouldn't take much to put it all together...

Why not dump them in the same place? Whether one body is found, or 30 bodies are found, there'd still be some police involvement. Dumping all the bodies in one place instead of spreading them out in lots of places reduces the chances that his hiding spot will be found.

It does seem like an oversight to keep dropping them in one place, maybe it just became his ritual like the blood on the microscope slides. Or he thought he did everything so perfect according to the code that even if they were found he would never be caught.

This was a great episode, I'm glad the show quality still seems on top of its game. Looking forward to the next 12 weeks.

After watching this I ordered season 1 from Netflix. My only concern - why would an obviously smart guy consistently put bodies in the same place? Is it part of his "code"? Really, he'd have to know eventually someone would stumble upon the dumpings...or is it a desire to eventually get caught and gain notoriety?

This season is going to be great! I caught the premiere due ot a free preview of Showtime, and I think I might have to go ahead and add it for good :)

It'll be really interesting when forensics discovers that all the people in the garbage bags are murderers and serial killers. What are people going to make of that?

The way The Unit ended and Dexter, I'm hoping the writers have Jonas and Dexter perhaps crossing paths! Now that WOULD be fun!!
