Dexter: Waiting to Exhale
(S02E02) Last time we left Dexter, things were looking both good and bad for our favorite serial killer -- the Bay Harbor Butcher. Please... as though he's nothing more than a mere butcher.Keith Carradine makes his first appearance for the season as the head of the task force investigating the new stack of body bags found at the bottom of the bay, and he's a fantastic presence.
Once again Dexter screws up big time with Little Chino, and I'm still not exactly sure how he got away. You mean to tell me he lifted that manhole cover himself and crawled in there? On top of that, he had to sit in there overnight and still risk people seeing him crawl out, people who wanted him dead. I know; it's a nitpick, but I don't often have those with this show.
It also seems Dexter is taking way too many other risks such as asking Vince how one would dump a body and borrowing weapons from the cage. And how long before that noticeable slice on Chino's cheek adds up to what's on the other victims in the "Butcher's" bags?
Dex seems to want to get his head on straight, even if it means he still has to kill a few baddies once in a while. He's trying to learn what makes his sister tick, and is legitimately confused by her and Rita's emotions. Oh Dex, all women are confusing and complicated, so don't feel so unique.
With Deb, Dexter is opening up himself to help her more, to be more of a true bother to her. With Rita, he's fessing up to some of his lies, even clumsily doing so by not covering all of his bases. Perhaps Dexter really does want to be caught, and these are just baby steps in that direction. He strives to hide what he's doing, to follow the code of Harry, yet he's sloppy after all these years. How long before roommate Deb discovers the surprise within Dex's air conditioner?
Dexter's reaction when sliding that knife into Little Chino was something akin to him getting off in a big way. I mean, he was quite, er, frustrated, one could say. I don't recall seeing Dexter kill very many people so clearly before on-screen. Usually we'd see him make an initial movement or hear something off-camera, but this time it was all too clear.
And what now with Rita? He's admitted his addiction, though not exactly the way Rita thinks, of course. This is by far the most brilliant aspect of this season, one you'll see play out starting next week.
Quote of the episode:
Agent Lundy: "First reports from the field has these parts as coming from one body."
Dexter (thinking): Actually it's two.
Agent Lundy: "Actually it's two."
Dexter (thinking): Uh oh.
