Bionic Woman: Sisterhood

by Bob Sassone, posted Oct 10th 2007 11:06PM

(S01E03) "$50 million and you didn't think we'd throw in a GPS?" - Jonas

OK, I have to admit it: with this episode Bionic Woman has me hooked for the long haul.

Where the first two episodes were way too heavy on the set up, this one was actually intriguing, lively, and jam-packed with witty lines. I'm actually beginning to think that the highlight of the show is Miguel Ferrer's Jonas character. Unlike Arvin Sloane over on Alias, Jonas is sarcastic and funny. And he's not the only one who had good dialogue in this episode. It's like the show was taken over by other writers or something after the first two episodes. The words were meatier, funnier.

In this episode, Jaime has to babysit an annoying teen girl (no, not her sister, another annoying teen girl). But she also has to deal with a desperate Sarah Corvus, who is dying from what's inside of her and needs Jaime's help.

One theory I've been tossing around - and I might as well toss it to you readers to see if you agree - is that Will isn't really dead. His death was either faked by the company or maybe he's being kept alive by his "I sound like Alec Baldwin's character on 30 Rock" dad for some reason. Actor Chris Bowers is featured prominently on the NBC site in promo pics, and it seems odd that he was only in two episodes. We find out in this episode that Will is the one who brought Sarah Corvus back to life after she was shot by Jae, we found out in the last episode that he was keeping a file on Jaime two years before they even met, and now Corvus is putting second thoughts into Jaime's head. I don't know, I think there's more to Will's death than meets the eye.

Speaking of eyes, Jaime has a camera in hers! Or, as Jonas puts it "we have streaming video in your head." That's actually a good plot point, though I don't know what sense it makes for Sarah to tell Jaime to "come alone" to the meeting place if Jaime's head has closed-circuit TV inside of it. I also love the idea that Jaime and Sarah are connected by their bionics. That will surely come into play in later episodes.

I loved the biplay between Jaime and Sarah in this ep. It's like if Cagney and Lacey had bionics and fought crime! I think it would be rather cool to see a big plot twist later in the season, with Jaime and Sarah joining forces against something, but I know this show is probably more likely to make them big enemies instead of big friends. As evidenced by the last scene with Sarah getting all evil and pissy again. Am I the only one who thought "yes, do it, do it!", when Sarah had her hand around the kid sister's neck?

Other observations from this episode:

- So Sarah also had an annoying kid sister, and she died exactly the way that Jaime almost died, in a spectacular car accident? Coincidence or lame writing? Maybe Will and the company only take women who have annoying sisters.

- Michelle Ryan is actually coming into her character more, but she gives her 15 year-old sister a glass of wine, and doesn't inquire as to why said sister was able to suck it down as if she belongs to a wine club that meets every Thursday night? Again, what is the writing here, realistic (I bet there are lots of older siblings who give their younger ones a sip of wine or beer) or irresponsible? With this and the bathroom drunken sex fest that Jaime attempted in an earlier ep, I wonder about Ms. Sommers sometimes.

- Still not sure why Jaime and Sarah have to do pull-ups and push-ups. Last week Jaime was doing one-armed pull-ups, but it was with her bionic arm. Shouldn't she been trying to strengthen her left arm?

- Anthony Andros is supposed to be Will's father? Checking the IMDb, the actor, Mark Sheppard, was born in 1964. How old was Will supposed to be?

- So the guys at HQ look at the bionic women when they're in the shower? I wonder if that stuff is on DVD in some hidden room in the basement of the facility?

- Jaime and sis live in one of the most incredible apartments on TV. How did she afford that when she was a bartender?

What do you want to happen to Sarah Corvus?
She remains an enemy of Jaime's and they fight every ep92 (22.9%)
They team up to fight crime142 (35.3%)
She kills Jaime and becomes the star of the show168 (41.8%)

We start of with another training session between Jae and Jamie. Jae tells Jamie about overcoming the programming of the Bionics which I am not clear about. If she has been enhanced, I would think the more believable approach is controlling the responses of her actions. For example, with her new strength, Jamie can really hurt people without intending to do so. If you remember in the first Bionic Woman series, Jamie was given a tennis ball and when she squeezed it with her Bionic arm she was able to pop the ball. I would have liked to have seen more of the new Jamie learning how to adjust herself with the new hardware. A good scene would be for Jamie working at the bar where she breaks bottles and glasses of booze or she breaks a sentimental item that either belonged to her younger sister or some type of family heirloom. This bit in the training sequence about her AI abilities to learn and unlearn is too Yoda-ish, “You must unlearn what you have learned.”

#35- Why would you assume that one line would cause a reaction in any group, be they pro-Hillary or against? I'm not a Hillary fan (although if Bill could run again, I'd vote for him. The man, despite his flaws, was a good prez), but it's just a sci-fi tv show. But I digress. I have been enjoying the show. I do wish they would show more of the bionics besides the 2 women beating up bad guys. In the first show, they had Jamie running, they could have more plots with her using that skill. But I'll continue to watch and hope the stories get a little better.

This 3rd episode was a WINNER. I think this is heading into the right direction. It is starting to show elements of surprise, suspense (like Prison break). At the same time, funny humor was good and I liked the dancing sexy Ryan.

It should work fine if you keep doing this.

One mistake the drama made was mentioning Hillary Clinton. Never do this because you will turn off anti-Hillary groups (which is quite large) but you will not gain any more viewers who are pro-Hillary just because that one liner was inserted. Don't risk a drama's future for a stupid cause.

It didn't even make sense in the context. Who in the world contacts Hillary for invasion of privacy ! Justice Department was correct, but not Hillary.

Otherwise, I see clear bright sky for the program. I don't understand some of the negative comments after the 3rd episode. I mean, what are they expecting ? A 007 movie every week ?

Even "Alias" was not that great for every episode. I liked some, but eventually tuned out because too predictable, been there, done that action flicks, and the story got too complicated so that you needed a PhD to follow it. Keep it simple. Keep up the good work.

I agree with #18. This entire show is just drivel. Nothing makes sense throughout the entire plot of all three episodes. No one reacts in a logical manner to anything. The acting is generally wooden. Jamie could use some human implants, not those bionics. I can't believe the people who created BG are responsible for such a lackluster show. At least the original Bionic Woman was internally consistent.

Well, apparently my Tivo thought I'd like this show. It was wrong. Typically, I'm not in the habit of watching the commercials and I did while watching this show - they were far more interesting and less predictable.

I remember watching the original show and I'd like to talk with the person at NBC who greenlit this show. Two man-jawed chicks (one being a decent actress, the other not so much). A bunch of recognizable faces. Horrible, horrible dialogue. Characters I don't care about and some more characters I would really like to see get killed off (like those two annoying teenagers and the bigot from Grey's Anatomy).

I don't know about anybody else but for me this is definitely the worst freshman show of the season.

I got to agree with some commenters : it sucked. Seriously, the show is filled with clichés, stupid plots and inconsistency - nothing else.

And wasn't Jamie supposed to be smart, not a dumb whinny "i wanna call Hilary Clinton!!" b*tch. Jesus!

where can I find the music from last nights episode. It sounded like the Pussycat Dolls, but I am not sure. Can someone email me or let me know on here. Or if this is not posted, could one of you writers or editors of this page let me know.

How can Washington and her trainer , what's his name, fight her so well. They have no bionics right? Their martial arts are that close to Jamie's bionics? I don't think that her bionics are on par with Lyndsay's. Lyndsay would have punched thru that wall in one try. Even sara couldn't do it on the first punch

Yeap, I'm hooked. With last night the show finally seems to have hit its stride, and coincidentally, made me realize that of the 4 new shows that I watch, 3 of them have British leads. Which is cool. Hopefully they'll all survive...

Isaiah Washington really need bring much need presence to the role, that only Sackhoff had previously. They should definitely try to get some Alias writers on board.
