Grey's Anatomy: Let the Truth Sting

(S04E03) "I'm young. I'm a fetus." - Derek

Here we go again. A great episode last week and then we get hit with this weird pile of mush. This wasn't the worst hour Grey's has given us, but it certainly wasn't the best. The whole episode was peppered with some very good moments along with some really bad ones. It's that inconsistency that I find annoying and it's one of the same issues that plagued the show last season. Is it too much to ask for two or three really good episodes in a row before we get a clunker? The truth does sting and the fact of that matter is, Grey's Anatomy is not as good as it once was.

So for starters, with everything that's going on, it drives me nuts that iGeorge still hangs over the whole show as this big gray cloud. It's depressing and awkward. I pray for the moment when this is finally resolved. Unfortunately, I don't think that's happening anytime soon. Izzie is depressed, Callie is depressed, and George is caught in the middle. At least he finally willed up the courage to tell Callie the truth at the end of the episode. The question to consider is what does Callie want? I do believe that she loves George and I doubt very much that she's just going to give up on the marriage.

By the same token, I don't see Izzie just dropping the torch either. The awakening of Really Old Guy and his subsequent death renewed her hope and determination. Don't get me started on how ridiculous it is that she grew so attached to another patient, but I do want to talk about Really Old Guy. That's definitely one of the things I loved about this episode. We're talking about the guy who was in a coma since this show started! They all used to eat lunch and nap in there because it was so quiet! Come to find out, he was only semi-comatose and had been keeping up on the gossip the entire time. This is just a perfect example of something that proves this show still has a pulse.

However, I hope it wasn't symbolic to any extent. Does Really Old Guy represent the quality of the first few seasons? If so... he's dead. This guy's comatose body was a staple of the show early on. OK, I'm officially reading into it too much.

Anyway, I'd make the same argument when it comes to Alex -- he gives the show a pulse too. I've always been indifferent about his character, but I'm starting to like how he's developing. He's a complete ass and he proved it on numerous occasions in this episode... but it's fun to watch. From outing George and his second year status to the other interns to flipping out on his new intern, Alex's scenes (whether you'll admit it or not) are great. He's become a new reason to stick with this show in my book. Speaking his new old man intern, what's his name? Norm Shales? That's just ridiculous because they're doing the exact same thing on House right now. You see that a lot though, two shows with the exact same story.

Anyway, the one story that sort of focused on Alex was definitely the best one in the episode. Sloan and Weber tried a radical new procedure involving tongues and nerves and leg muscles, Derek got dragged into it at the last minute, and it forced Alex to perform some risky techniques (needles shoved in eyes) on a younger patient in Bailey's clinic. All of it just tied together really well I thought.

However, I was surprised at some of it. It seemed very unlike Weber to put his desire to try a new procedure ahead of the well-being of a patient. Same goes for Sloan and I'm glad Derek called them out on it after they left the OR. That woman might have never spoken again because two doctors wanted to prove that "they still had it." Regardless, it was the highlight of the hour and not because medical history was made or whatever.

I suppose since the show is named after her that we should talk about Meredith. Nothing all too exciting there. She's not being honest with Cristina about Derek and Cristina's not being honest with her about Burke and it's honestly just a lot of blah blah blah. Fortunately, while she started out the episode as her usual whiny self, it ended with a positive scene between her and Lexie. Meredith explained everything that happened with Lexie's mom. I suppose it was inevitable that those two would start to bond. Hopefully it sticks though because when they fight? Annoying.

I doubt very much that Meredith will approve of Lexie and Alex giving each other the "elevator eyes." Lexie is a series regular though and she's already gone three whole episodes without getting frisky. She's due for some naked time with someone. Alex? Derek? Sloan? I'm sure any of them would be ready, willing, and able. Well maybe not Derek. He's still having plenty of "secret break up sex" with Meredith.

The biggest disappointment in this episode was Bailey. She was back to her old self last week and already she's reverted into this soft, understanding woman. She's being nice to Callie and even offering help. This is not the Bailey we're used to. Then again, if you ask me, this is the show we're used to either.

Which story did you think was the most ridiculous in this episode?
Really Old guy waking up and dying.82 (8.8%)
Bailey being nice to Callie.86 (9.2%)
Sloan and Weber advocating the new surgery.115 (12.3%)
Alex's new intern.190 (20.4%)
Anything Izzie does.460 (49.3%)

I'm so very glad to know that other contributors - Jigme Chhimi, Nancy, Merle, Scott, Barbara and Glenda - see just how much substance Grey's has lost, depleted as it is by the loss of Mr. Isaiah Washington as Dr. Preston Burke.

The fascinating thing for me is, that so many people are starting to recognise exactly what this actor/character brought to the show. Dr. Burke, with his effortless grace, intelligence, arrogance, humanity, self-assuredness, manliness, seriousness, kindness and gravitas was a core part of what gave Grey's in its early days its credibility and "believability".

His very absence is stronger than the presence of some of the newer characters in the show which speaks volumes all by itself!

With the rapidly tanking ratings, I don't know how Grey's is going to turn itself around, or whether that's even possible, now...

The show needs a serious injection of someone: paging Dr. Burke.....!

@clgbutterfly: As to your comments about character/personal growth; have you met any surgeons, namely specialty surgeons? They're immature scalpel jockeys with God complexes, especially the younger ones. Not to mention the ego that comes with the job. You're also talking about Meredith who is emotionally crippled due to her mother's nastiness and her father's lack of spine.

I agree that everyone needs to grow, but you have to put that into context. It'll take a lot more to make these people grow. It's arguable that some of them (Meredith, Christina) are so self involved that they haven't let half of what has happened to them fully sink in. It takes a lot to chip away at the ego of a Christina Yang.

For all of Callie's strength and bravado, she comes off as needy and desperate when it comes to George. For how much she claims she loves George, she does nothing to stop him from making a bad decision after the death of his father because she's desperate to have him in her life. That's just sick. Callie needs to be held responsible for her actions while George was dealing with his father's illness and death just as much as George needs to be held responsible for cheating on her, and Izzie for letting that happen. Callie has every right to be mad at Izzie, but when is she going to apologize to George for trapping him when he needed time to grieve? I'm tired of people condoning her acting like she's a victim in the whole thing. If you want to discuss growth, Callie needs to step up and accept some blame herself.

Ladies and Gentlemen your answers lie in simple fact that everyone needs to grow. They have made no bones about the fact that these characters are not growing as people. They are still sex obessed, whiny, selfish. The allure of this show for me was the possibility that they would learn from their mistakes and the tramuas they see. Do they? NOPE!
What's the point of Izzie losing the heart guy or Merideth nearly dying. They are strong people and capable of learning, so let them!
Currently the show is in a downward sprial and unless they figure it out they will plummet and crash. So much for the show that was nominated a future classic by TVLAND awards.

I happen to love it, I love the fact that the show has more than just "action" it is a drama, you know a night time soap opera and this is a very good one with wonderful actors and actresses. This show has everything such as, comedy, action, and sex. I like the fact that it is hard to pick a favorite, because they are all good! Every season has started out slow, but I have faith that it is about to get real crazy. I am so looking foward to Thursday.

I miss the old "Grey's". This is not the show it started out as. I think something needs to be done with the relationship with Meridth and McDreamy! This has gotten old to me. I like Izzy, the old Izzy. Callie, I like, George, I don't. His caracter needs some improvement, to me, he went downhill when he slept with Meridth. The show is just not as good as it was at first. I don't want it to end, it just needs work.

Okay, maybe I just need a life, but I just can't wait to see next week's episode. Granted, this is only the 3rd season I've seen, but I still love it. Although, I do miss Addison.

I am so totally disappointed with the new season. I have only watched twice and each time, I thought the show had lost it's appeal. It ended badly last season and when the season opened, no mention was made of Burke walking out. Give the viewers a break. Secondly, the show is blah without Burke and Addison. Even though she was not my favorite, she added something to the show. Too bad it was not Izzy/Catherine Heigle who left the show. She is so smug and self righteous. I absolutely do not like her or her character. One would have thought Isiah Washington pulled out a gun and killed someone the way she went on every talk show and talked about his homophobia. Give us a break. People are entitled to think what they want to think and even say what they think according to the first amendment. This show will not last long if the storylines continue as they are now. It was a hot show, now it sucks and last week, I did not look. My daughter and I looked forward to talking about what was going on last season during commercial breaks. Now she does not even watch.

I am not sure getting rid of Isiah Washington was the right move but I think his departure and Addison's certainly hurt the ratings. I would not care if they cancelled it for next season. I just know that I am not watching anymore. Boring.

No matter what is wrong with these first two shows, Grey's Anatomy is always better than most. Shondra, get with it.

Too bad they wrote Preston Burke out of the story. Now George and Izzie will fall flat on their faces where they belong. The only thing they will be remembered for is this running him out of the show for personal reasons. Show will probably fail all because of their personal need to put personal issues into the day to day interactions of the cast. Too bad.
