It's official: Conan moving to L.A.

by Bob Sassone, posted Oct 11th 2007 3:21PM

Conan O'BrienThere have been rumors swirling ever since Conan O'Brien was tapped by NBC to replace Jay Leno as host of The Tonight Show that O'Brien would be asked to move to L.A. from his current New York City home. And now it's been made official by NBC: Conan will move to L.A. when he takes over the show in 2009.

The network has big plans for the area. NBC is selling off part of its Burbank lot and Conan's show will beam to us from the renovated Studio One at Universal Studios.

Conan won't be alone at the new place. NBC is spending a lot of money on the complex, and across the street will be the new home for NBC News when they report out of L.A. as well as retail stores and many new homes.

Of course, this means no more Burbank for NBC! That's really sad, considering the legacy that Johnny Carson left there with The Tonight Show. Well, at least the new place, Studio One, was once home to The Jack Benny Show, so there will still be a classic TV connection.

All the people who talk about Conan not being funny are stupid and old. Jack Parr? I learned about him in history class, who cares? And Jay Leno is so not funny anymore, he was ok in the early 90's, but lately his jokes tend to tank. You guys are stuck in your old sense of humor and don't get what's funny nowadays. I have been a devoted Late Night fan from the start and I have tolerated watching Jay in order to watch Connan. We will be lucky to have Conan out here and now I won't have to stay up late to watch his show.

Conan's dad...

Ha-ha-ha-ha.....I don't watch the show at all, but I think I would if you were the host. That was a downright entertaining bit of commentary there. Actually though, reading the immense difference of opinions in who is the better host, makes me curious who is the best.

Conan and Letterman in NY always seem to have interesting guests regularly whereas Leno always has the biggest hollywood douchebags on and almost always lame musical guests - so many country a-holes.

I doubt Conan will still have relatively unknown independent bands or cult favorites on (ie Ted Leo, Joe Strummer). He'll probably have to much pressure to only have big guests and it will all be Toby Keith, Sugarland, ugh. Conan belongs in NYC.

Geez, virtually all of you who weighed in on this topic are Conan haters...and apparently cantankerous old coots!

Yeah, you can all wax nostalgic that Johnny was the best (and I admit, I liked him, even though I was pretty young when he was on)...but he's been off the air since 1992. It's time to move on.

While most of you think there hasn't been anything good on TV since they added color, you can only watch so many Honeymooners and I Love Lucy reruns.

If you hate Conan, you probably also hate Fox, MTV, Comedy Central, Cartoon Network, and 99% of the "trash" that Hollywood produces these days...becasue you just "don't get it" and "dont' see why anyone would want to watch it".

Well, it's becasue it's not targeted for your demographic - it's a bit more, hip, fresh and current than the safe, familiar (and tired) classics that you embrace so dearly.

Remember when you had your slicked back ducktail haircut, your '57 Chevy, your poodle skirt, your Elvis, and your malt shop? And remember how YOUR parents thought it all sucked, and that you were a "fool" for liking it - same thing here.

You say you can't stand Conan, but have you really ever even watched it - and I mean for more than 5 minutes on one occasion. Have you really seen the show enough to conclude that it is 100% humorless and appeals only to complete morons? Besides, isn't the show on way past your bedtime?

I like Jay Leno, and I like Conan too...probably more. I'm sorry, but he (and/or his writers) are consistently more quick, witty, and clever than Jay (and his writers) are. I can very clearly tell that from time to time Jay is simply reading jokes that his staff wrote, and he doesn't even really get them, or why they're funny...because in some respects, he himself is out of touch. Strangely, sometimes these are the jokes that get the biggest laughs.

So, I'm not trying to come down on all of you, but damn, please try to not be so quick to pass such harsh judgement on Conan.

If he sucks so bad, just don't watch him - they're are plenty of us in the 18-49 demographic who will...that's who most advertisers are really trying to reach anyway.

Bottom Line:

Conan IS funny, at least as far as I (and millions of other people) are concerned. You are entitled to disagree, but that doesn't make the rest of us wrong.

Besides, there's probably some worthwhile programming on PBS that you find more agreeable.

Man, Conan O'Brien is the funniest man on late night television. But, if you don't like it, don't watch it. Just like that. Your problem is solved.

Oh yeah, Carson has the worst writers (and stage presence).

HOW CAN ANYBODY WITH AN IQ OVER 50 LIKE CONAN THE IRRITANT. IT'S UNBELIEVABLE. COULD SOME ONE OUT THERE EXPLAIN WHY THEY LIKE HIM AND THINK HE IS FUNNY. I'M BAFFLED.

I still can not believe O'brien is taking over the Leno show. O'brien rarely even gets a smile from me, it's not the writers, the guy just sucks. I used to think it was a generation thing because I am the same age as Leno and Letterman, but then Carson Daily came around and i laugh at his material as much as Leno's. Face it, your former boy wonder just isn't funny!!! If he really does take over i suppose i'll have to start watching Letterman, God Forbid!!

That will be the end of the tonight show for me! I grew up with Johnny Carson. Jay leno did a good job filling his shoes. But Conan????? You are kidding!! He doesn't have in what it takes to host the tonight show - I'll be surprised if it doesn't do a major nose dive in ratings.
