Ellen's dog saga gets 'out of hand'

by Anna Johns, posted Oct 18th 2007 4:22PM
ellen degeneresIt's clear that Ellen DeGeneres didn't know what she was in for when she sobbed on her television show earlier this week about a dog rescue gone bad. Ellen cried as she told the audience how she adopted a dog from an animal rescue organization, but it didn't get along with her cats, so she gave it to her hairdresser. That violated the agency's adoption rules, so the agency took the dog away from the heartbroken hairdresser and her family. Ellen pleaded for the agency to return the dog and apologized for screwing up.

Then things got ugly. Fans of Ellen began harassing the rescue organization by sending angry--and sometimes threatening--emails. The owner of the organization said the threats scared her so badly that she closed her doors and stayed home on Wednesday.

On today's show, Ellen asks viewers to leave the organization alone. But she also says that she wants it to return the dog to the hairdresser because the woman's daughter is so attached to it.

I don't think the shelter was in anyway wrong for keeping track of the dog- I used to work in an office with a young lady who went out of her way to adopt a kitten from a rescue home; after only 1 week she decided they didn't want the kitten after all, & instead of giving it back (or even calling the people), her then boyfriend took the kitten down a dirt road & dumped it- talk about heartless!!!!

I'm surprised that Ellen's phony acting job was so successful at manipulating public opinion. Her little power trip backfired on her and now she is making her spin doctors work overtime. GET OVER IT. She screwed up. Her fault. GIVE IT A REST.

I like Ellen a lot but c'mon, this is crazy. She messed up. I wish that the agency would have given the dog back, but if I would have had to go through what the people at the agency are going through ( death threats, constant calls...) I would have said the hell with everyone to. Anyway to see what I really think go to

There's some extra footage and my take on the whole deal.

We got a dog from an Eskimo rescue that was "legally bound to be returned to the breeder", but the rescue organization didn't know it. As soon as they found out they put us in touch with the breeder. The breeded met with us and decided that we had a good home for the dog. What is this lady's problem? She could have simply met with the people Ellen gave the dog to and NOTHING would have come of this...instead she looks like an ass and nobody I know would want to get a dog from her. She clearly has Napolean complex. Get some therapy sister!!!!!

I guess Ellen probably knows all about dogs - like the fact that Brussels Griffons are known for not being good with children. And since it's a puppy and the Mom works full time - who is going to housetrain this puppy? Puppies also need to eat often during the day - are the kids up to looking after this dog? Or will they tire of it?
For Goodness sake, they only had the dog for a few days, Ellen only had it for 2 weeks. The agency has taken care of this dog for a longer time than both of them and is looking out for it's welfare.

Maybe the agency knows a bit about dogs, ya think?

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. You would shoot her? Who's the sinner now? Yeah she's a lesbian, but that will be judged by the good Lord. What will he judge you for? What have you contributed to society? The difference between her and you, say, is that we know her sin. As far as the dog, she got wrapped up in a bad deal with this dog, her heart was in the right place. Relax and learn the gospel.

I volunteer at an animal shelter as an adoption counslor, and have had extensive training. What kind of training have the owners of Mutts & Moms had? What qualifies them to determine what a good home is for a pet? In my experience, many rescue groups operate under the guise of rescue, but in reality are hoarders. Hence the difficulty in adopting a dog from their rescue group - they make it just about impossible to adopt because in their sickness they believe only THEY know what is best for the animals in their possission. Some of these dogs have been in their "shelters" for years. The moment you lose sight of what is best for the dog - and your organizaton becomes about rules - the pet has lost. When it comes to a living, breathing creature, you can't have iron clad rules - because sometimes letting a dog go to someone who doesn't meet your criteria may be the best thing for the dog! The sad thing about this is that if people turn away from shelters and rescue groups because of the ridiculous hoops they require you to jump through, more puppies and dogs will be purchased from pet stores and back yard breeders - which are usually bred in puppy mills. More mother dogs will be consigned to lives of misery to churn out more and more puppies that will be sold to anyone who has the money to buy them. This cycle defeats everything legitimate shelters and rescue groups are trying to eliminate.

Hate speech sucks, whether you are condemning "Lezbos" or calling for the dog lady to be "put to death." But let's chill on the censorship talk. It is a blog. Morons get to vent, and we get to point and laugh. Everybody wins!
