Bionic Woman: The Education of Jaime Sommers

by Bob Sassone, posted Oct 24th 2007 10:23PM

Bionic Woman(S01E05) "How's your British accent?" - Jonas, to Jaime

So I'm curious: did they have Michelle Ryan use her real British accent in this episode as a funny, insider-ish sort of joke, or did she just get tired that week and not want to fake an American accent? Regardless, it brings up the question, why is Ryan even faking an American accent? Can't she just play a Brit who lives in America? When she kept using her "fake" British accent while talking to Nathan on the phone, I thought it was a really lame mistake. Thankfully they had Nathan ask her why she's faking it even on the phone with him. It's good they explained that, but still...

So here we are with Cliched Plot #14: the hero goes undercover in a college to investigate some odd experiments and professors. This plot has been used in every single private eye/hero/action show since the beginning of television. No Katee Sackhoff this episode, and this one didn't have anything to do with the Jaime/Sarah/Anthros plot, it was a standalone episode. Some observations:

- Jaime drinks way too much. It's Bionic Woman, not Alcoholic.

- Pope pretending to be Jaime's cousin was painfully stupid. This guy is supposed to be a superspy? Way to give a possible enemy some suspicions about Jaime.

- Is NBC going to have Jaime's cell phone ringtone available for download on their site?

- Why does Jaime even bother with martial arts half the time? For example, the fight scenes tonight? They would have been over in three seconds if Jaime had used her two bionic legs to jump around or run around quickly and subdue the guy. And how can she punch someone in the head with her bionic arm and have him come back at her immediately?

- The CIA guy should be on the show more.

The episode did have one of the more disturbing openings of any show this season, with a former POW slicing an officer's neck and then wiping out a military hospital with a gun. I think this scene and the episode's plot would be controversial if it was on a more "serious" show, not a cartoonish action show where a woman runs really fast. (Speaking of, are the special effects on this show really bad or what? Every time she runs and jumps to another building I cringe. I've seen better effects on Thunderbirds.)

This wasn't a terrible episode. I like how the one liners are brighter (even if much of the dialogue is still pretty weak), but the plots and the way she goes about her assignments are cliched and predictable. I just want to see something a little bit more in this show, you know? It's fine as a way to kill an hour, but it's nothing more than that right now.

And one more thing...a melon? Seriously...a melon?! Jeez.

Did you miss Katee Sackhoff this episode?
Yes! I can't watch this show without her.122 (32.5%)
Yeah, but I understand they can't have her in it every week.150 (40.0%)
Not at all.103 (27.5%)

Let me start by saying that in less the 3 minutes I am already pissed about this episode. Jamie is having margaritas with her friends. They are complaining to her not having a man in her life. What was really troublesome was the camera kept moving in cinema verte style which does not work here. This was one of the reasons why I never watched another episode of NYPD Blue after the pilot. The cinema verte style has a very documentary feel to it to make us feel as we are they in the moment. On BSG, this style goes well with the storytelling. On Bionic Woman, the camera movement makes me sick to my stomach. Part two of my rant, Jamie gets called in for a mission where Jonas goes over the details quickly, gives Jamie a college i.d., and ask how is her British accent. Since I already knew Michelle Ryan was Brit actress, this was one of the lamest alias covers I’ve ever seen.

it's right, Antonio is an amateur spy. Pretend to be Jamie's uncle is not so wrong, intercontinental marriage is common after all, but it's not the right move. And why doesn't he wait until she's alone? I don't see the urgency.. use the phone instead rather than expose yourself. Or, if he must interrupt, pretend to be something else like 'her education consultant'.

And the CIA guy should be more on the show, but I'm afraid he's gonna be the 007 and Jamie's just gonna be both Bond's girl and one of his hi-tech gadgets (2 in 1).

Next episode, she's going to team with him, it's good, so she can learn from a more experienced agent in the field. I wonder if she'll speak French in Paris. Well, Jamie, you have '2 weeks' to do French crash course. After Brit accent, now French. Remember, Bourne can speak German and Alias can speak other languages too.

Anyway, the show is still enjoyable and funny.

it's 2 minutes in the show and Becca looks gorgeous and mature in a close-up shot. the love story drama with the CIA agent may be cliche but the whole package is good and entertaining.

I don't know if this was intentional, but the melon throwing seemed like a nod to the original Bionic Woman. In the episode where Helen Hunt guest starred, Jaime throws a head of lettuce to take out a bad guy.

I don't know if somebody has mentioned this already, but was the cameraman/editor drunk during the shooting/editing of this episode. I have only watched the first couple minutes, but the camera looks like it is shaking, and certainly not for any effect the director was trying to create. Its incredibly distracting. Hopefully it will get better.

That, combined with the awful widescreen-to-standard cutting that almost all shows endure nowadays, makes me a sad panda.

I am going to have to call it quits with this one. I really wanted this show to be good. Michelle Ryan was just the worst choice for this role.

Ok, mostly unrelated, but, what is it with shows where someone gets super powers but can't tell their friends this year? Reaper, Chuck, Bionic Woman... Sure, ok, Reaper has his friends, but, by and large, he's a secret too. Just seems... well... coincidental.

I guess the complaints about Michelle Ryan’s acting got through to the producers of NBC’s Bionic Woman series. They decided to suddenly have her speak with a British accent.

Well, in real life Michelle Ryan speaks with a British accent... as she did on every television role she has held before Bionic Woman. Still, considering how poorly Americans do British accents, it is a stretch of the imagination that a bartender would instantaneously speak perfect across-the-pond-ese.

And, for that matter, if she is only supposed to be pretending to speak British, why does she do it with people who know who she really is and not just with those with whom she is undercover?

Good thing Michelle is a perfect ten hottie or I wouldn’t watch this show at all.

Well... I do enjoy seeing Miguel’s jowls... but it is mostly to see Michelle.

Mostly.

I really enjoyed this episode. I was much lighter than the past ones. I thought I was starting to hear "bionic sounds" but wasn't sure like when she broke the metal bar by the window while breaking into the lab. I like the one hour story archs while still keeping continuous sl's going. Jaime and "Tom" has great chemistry together and I was happy to see in the previews that he will be back in the next episode. Did not like the accent but whatever. Lindsay Wagner should be tapped for a recurring role in some capacity. Would bring in a lot of fans from "The" Bionic Woman.

I think the show turned the corner with this episode. With all the criticisms of the first few shows, most of which are valid, this episode showed Jaime moving out and embracing her role more. She seems to be handling the huge changes that have transpired in her life well. The writers are on to something. They are doing what a good story entails. With multiple plot lines, some resolved, many unresolved and different characters in it makes for a more interesting story. Ruth, Nathan, Sarah, Anthony, Jay and Antonio etc. all have back stories and the potential threats of our day and time are always unexpected. I like the 24, Alias feel to the show.

Jonas has made adjustments just as much as Jaime has and I think they see that in each other. He has begun to treat her as a valued "person" not a commodity. She is following his orders etc.

It takes time for a show to get going often, and this one seems to be on its way.

And for those who have complained about the sound effects, if you listen they've added subdued ones to the action scenes. The good news is rather than slowing down the footage and wasting airtime, it happens real-time.
