South Park: Imaginationland Episode II

by Brad Trechak, posted Oct 24th 2007 11:58PM
South Park(S11E11) So, it is a trilogy. And the barrier has been broken and the bad part of imagination is free.

There were enough references in the episode that made me deduce that Trey Parker and Matt Stone are fans of the current incarnation of Battlestar Galactica. The first hint was the opening words "Previously, on Battlestar Galactica..." The second was having Butters wake from death (as with the Cylons from the aforementioned show). And finally, a reference to the Council of Nine at the end of the episode (or was that a Babylon 5 reference?).

I admit, I was sort of hoping that the bad part of imagination would be all the bad ideas (or rather, ideas that Trey and Matt didn't like) from years past. Instead, it was all the monsters of the imagination from years past. Good enough.

I love the little nuances that Matt and Trey notice. The U.S. government has always portrayed their enemies as having no imagination, yet they display no imagination themselves ("Project Imagination Doorway", anybody?).

Speaking of, the Imagination Song actually had a point! When I first heard the Mayor singing it in the last episode, I figured they were making fun of Family Guy's tendency to have characters break out into pointless songs. Now that I know that the song had a purpose (a funny one at that), I can only conclude that Matt and Trey and the rest of the writers are geniuses.

Weren't the callbacks to previous episodes great? First, there were the Woodland Critters from "Woodland Critter Christmas" (who were, in my mind, the most evil creatures in the horde) and also an appearance by Al Gore's nemesis, the Manbearpig ("He's half man, half bear, and half pig"). Is it arrogance to celebrate your own imagination?

I knew the only reason Cartman fought so hard to resuscitate Kyle was to show him the contract on his hospital bed and try to have him suck the balls. Torturing Kyle is his reason for existence. Otherwise, he would have just let Kyle do it and go on with life rather than play his elaborate set-up game in the conference room. I think next week if Kyle actually tries to suck his balls, he won't want it to happen.

How great is it that the show parodies Hollywood cliches like "If you believe in yourself, everything will be all right" while a nuclear missile is prepared for launch into Imaginationland?

Overall, a great episode.

Favorite quotes:

  • "Tap your heels three times." "Really?" "No, you f**king dips**t! That was a joke!"
  • "Care for some nuts? Oh, that's right. You'll be chock full of nuts in a minute."
  • "Balls so dry they explode like dust."
  • "We built a doorway into the imagination. We called it Project Imagination Doorway." "That's not very imaginative."

Characters recognized from this episode: Cylons. Frankenstein. The Alien. Predator. Stormtroopers. Medusa. Jason. Freddy. Wario. Terminator. Headless Horseman. Minotaur. Khan from Star Trek, Darth Maul, the Joker, the robot from The Black Hole, Tron characters, Strawberry Shortcake, Wonder Woman, Zeus, Morpheus, Aslan, Luke Skywalker, Gandalf, and Popeye. Who did I miss?

Who was the most evil character from the bad side of Imaginationland?
The Woodland Critters979 (73.5%)
Manbearpig269 (20.2%)
The Alien25 (1.9%)
The Minotaur10 (0.8%)
Someone else49 (3.7%)

Don't know if anyone saw this, but that big brown cat thing with the upward-pointing arrows on it's stomach was Totoro from the Studio Ghibli logo and the movie "My Neighbor Totoro".

Hm... all these comments are nice, but they suggest that this episode was just a critic of holywood and lack of imagination. It seems that people tend to forget the political dimension of this trilogy. I think that what the creators of south park meant by this image of terrorists attacking our imagination was that nowadays terrorism, although an existing fact, has been turned into a myth used by the media and the government. The media, because they need to feed us (you-i'm not american) with stories that make us react (the whole fear consumption thing), and the government, because it has no credibility without the fear of terrorism. This metaphore actually shows us that with the obsession of terrorism, if we tend to focus our minds and imagination only on this issue, it might turn this great nation into a fear obsessed, imaginationless and manipulated nation.

"South Park" is the best, and this story arc is awesome.

I did not expect the return of the Woodland Critters, but they were awesome. "THEY'RE RAPING ME! THEY"RE RAPING ALL OF US! THEY'RE RAPING ALL OF US AND IT HURTS!" "Get out of there Kurt Russell!" And all of the Stargate and BSG references...amazing. Also the name "Project Imagination Doorway," which according to Stan was "not very imaginative." There are so many great lines and pop culture references in these two episodes, I don't know what to say. But the Woodland Critters were defintiely the best. Beary Bear: "But we've GOT to have AIDS before we pee in her eye socket." Genius.

Here's how I think this will have to end:
Something will go wrong with the nuclear warhead, and the evil creatures are going to use it against the real world instead. Kenny will come out of nowhere and sacrifice himself by rescuing Stan and Butters, and preventing the nuke from re-entering the real world somehow. At long last, he will have died again (for the first time since Season 9) and then, with everyone else safe, Cartman demands that Kyle suck his balls. Kyle will be tired and perfectly willing to do it, causing Cartman to become pissed off and not willing to let him do it because he wants to make Kyle mad, not let him have his way.

"Care for some nuts? ...Oh, that's right, I guess you'll be chock full of nuts in a few minutes."

3 things: The path to the castle is from "Candyland", and I believe the evil guy with the eyepatch is the villain from "Star Trek VI: Undiscovered Country". You know, the one that quotes Shakespeare in the original Klingon? I also saw Mighty Mouse somewhere. Also, does anyone see a similiarity with the Council of 9 and the Supreme Court?? i.e. one black justice??

Nice to read there are others who share my interest in this very clever creative intelligent thought provoking series. Thanks for the great post.
there is the Fairy Godmother and Jesus who sit on the council of 9 as well.
"Don't worry kid, the council of 9 consists of some of the most highly regarded characters in all of imaginationland!" Lollypop telling Butters as they are being led into the Council chambers.
if laughter is some of the best medicine, the following has been very good for my health.
Butters: " Awe, I'm the Key? could I not be the Key Morpheus? I don't want to be the Key."
Luke: " If you want to see your home again you have to rise to this challenge."
Butters: " But I...but I'm supposed to be in school right now and, and instead I got Snarf and Popeye and Luke Skywalker all pissed off."
