Kid Nation: Bonanza is Disgusting
(S01E06) No, no, no ... not Bonanza with the Ponderosa! Hop Sing could always cook up a fine feast and the Cartwrights never fussed about hard labor. The episode title refers to Bonanza City, New Mexico. You know -- 40 days, 40 kids (well, 38 kids now and almost three weeks less), and no adults. Well, they say no adults, but believe me, it's the adults putting everything in motion. But it is indeed the kids of Kid Nation who make this show worth watching. It's the kids who, by being themselves, bring me entertainment each week.
Oh, but Bonanza City is indeed disgusting. Or, it was before the adult push of the week.
Okay, I know the show is heavily manipulated by the invisible adults who aren't there. No, it's not just in my mind. You can't see them except for Jonathan the host, but they're like gremlins hiding in the dark corners putting wacky ideas in the heads of these kids. I'm not crazy, I tell you!
This week, a half a dozen of the kids were complaining about how nasty their garbage dumping area was just as the town council read that they should do something about the garbage. Amazing! Of course, it can't be editing out of sequence ... or could it?
One of the great things about being a kid is that, when you don't like another kid, you can yell at them. That's something which changes somehow in your adult years. If you personally dislike your boss as an adult, you can't just yell at him and refuse to work, not if you want that paycheck each week. If you go around yelling at people when you're an adult, it casts aspersions on your stability. Live free while you can, kids!I'm not recommending being mean, but sometimes it's refreshing to say what's really on your mind. Sometimes it's great just to get out your frustrations, cry if you have to cry, scream if you must.
That's what the kids on the show are doing. Taylor is upset with Zach because he replaced her on the town council and she thinks he's bossy. Everyone is upset with Taylor's behavior except her BFF Leila. Mike is an excitable lad who screams, cries, jumps for joy, and tries so hard I think it might make his head hurt. Other kids have a rough edge to them at times (Greg, for example), but deep down I want to get to know them more each week.
When it came time for the council members to decide who to recruit for the cleaning the dump duty, they all wanted Taylor on the job mainly just to bug her. Since they wanted Taylor, that meant her sidekick Leila, too. All of the others were chosen because they were either strong or good workers. Now, the criteria for choosing Taylor set up the drama as they knew it would.
Enter DK. We haven't seen much of him in previous episodes, but we surely saw a lot of him tonight. He was chosen because he's a good worker and is always willing to help.As Taylor (and thus Leila) refused to work with the garbage duty, it was DK who looked thoughtful and seemed to want to talk to her, not yell at her. It was DK who tried to console and pep talk Guylan after the younger boy and new council leader couldn't carry his own weight in the garbage task despite trying his hardest. It was DK who stopped "hyena-like" behavior of some kids in town. It was DK who ruled this episode, and even brought about this week's tears.
Taylor continued to act up and her behavior was totally out of line. The kids definitely took the wrong approach to solve the issues. They ganged up on her (not physically), yelled, screamed, and were basically very mean to her. That's only going to make her more badly behaved plus it's just downright mean. But I'm an adult and I know these things.
So does DK.
Although she didn't work the garbage detail, mocked the punishment they gave her, scoffed at them all and called them dictators -- "you aren't the boss of me!" -- Taylor did get down and dirty with the rest in this week's showdown.
Everyone got down and dirty as they had to find cans with their district colors in a 1600 gallon tank of baked beans with pigs so it's the pork and beans showdown. Zach yelled that it wasn't kosher, but he jumped in anyway. Greg dived in head first at one point, but it was the red district who just couldn't be beat. Guylan, after his rough time with the garbage duty, felt totally redeemed. The yellow district (now led by Zach) are the cooks again, blech. Thankfully, green stayed out of the labor zone becoming the merchants while blue took last place despite Greg's dive. Poor little Alex tried so hard to get his can but came in after the buzzer and cried. Not to worry, Alex. Your district still wouldn't have won. After all, when your leader Anjay uses the "muscles are still developing" line in a task which really didn't call for muscle ... you're excused, Alex. You guys were two cans behind.
In the reward part, watching the faces of the kids light up about getting fruits and vegetables made me grin. Jonathan made it obvious that the choice of gas-powered dune buggies after they just went through a whole bit about pollution would just be wrong. But so many of the kids really had their eyes on the fruit that I think if they had voted and he didn't mention the pollution factor, they would have gone for the wiser choice anyway.
For the first time with the new make-up of the town council leaders, the decision for the gold star honor was unanimous -- DK. No other name was even brought up. No drama, no fuss, no argument.
Until at the town meeting when DK decided he wanted to go home before the gold star was even awarded, that is. He just couldn't take all the fighting and meanness. Tears flowed and I have to admit to a few here, too. Dang, his parents raised themselves a good kid, didn't they?
It was up to Guylan to re-redeem himself and save the day as he talked privately to DK. He didn't tell DK that they planned to give him the gold star, just told him how much the town needed him and how much he (Guylan) needed him.
It worked. DK stayed, got the $20,000 gold star, everyone's happy, Bonanza City is no longer disgusting, and I think I see the doves of peace and balloons of happiness filling the skies.
Or something like that.
