Desperate Housewives: Art Isn't Easy

Desperate Housewives
(S04E05) "Bossy women rule this street." - Lynette

Desperate Housewives episodes are not consistent this year (were they ever in the past?) but they are at least entertaining. First, we got a good premiere. Then, we were treated with a delicious lemon meringue face off between Bree and Katherine. This was followed by a somewhat disappointing game night. And last week, we witness what I call a filler episode since storylines (maybe except the Bree one) didn't advance much and Susan was so ridiculously stupid that it was uncomfortable to watch her. In short, we were due for a good Desperate Housewives episode.

I'm not sure this week's episode could be qualified as good but it could get the mention of being a fair episode that helped move some story lines along.

The affair

Desperate HousewivesCarlos and Gaby's affair made a 360° thanks to John Rowland's reappearance. I'm glad that they didn't drag the Carlos/Gaby affair for too long as it was already getting tired. After Carlos heard the juicy details about Gaby and John's affair, I was expecting him to react and act. But I didn't expect Carlos to visit the ex-gardener and forgive him especially since I remember how Carlos used to beat up everyone who got too close to Gaby in the first season.

Carlos is one of the characters who grew a lot over the years. He was self-centered and money-oriented in the first season. Well, he still likes money but he is more down to earth and thinks about his actions and others. Wanting to do the right thing, Carlos ended things with Gaby, by telling her that they should dump their respective "loved" ones, wait for a while, and then get back together.

Their plan seemed good at first even if it was to be expected that things wouldn't go smoothly, but since Edie now knows about the affair, there will be hell to pay. Carlos and Gaby were afraid of what Victor would do if he found out about the affair. Now, they should be shaking in their boots because not only will Victor learn of the affair (for sure Edie will show him the pictures) but Edie will be going on a rampage!

The lie

There is nothing like Bree on a mission. This week, she wanted to drag Danielle back home. Bree had many reasons to bring her daughter back to Wisteria Lane. One reason she didn't say out loud was that if Danielle didn't come back, then Bree's fake pregnancy would be put in jeopardy. How would she be able to explain to everyone that she didn't have the child without telling a morbid lie? Bree is all about appearances so it was key to get Danielle's baby back.

Clearly, Bree doesn't know her daughter very well. But once Andrew, who seems to know his sister inside out, told her about Danielle's priorities (herself and fun), Bree was able to tap into her endless creativity and convince her daughter to come back home. Orson and Bree are not only made for one another but they are fantastic actors! Just look at how they were able to tell all those lies to Danielle and throw in her face tons on goodies.

The face off

Desperate Housewives"Art Isn't Easy" indeed. Can you believe this eye sore cost $24,000? Okay, it's not THAT bad looking but it doesn't fit with Bob and Lee's house. This is the type of artistic fountain I would expect to find in front of a new building. In any case, the fountain was instrumental in this week's episode. Not only did it offer an entertaining Lynette and Katherine face off (not as funny as the Bree/Katherine ones), but it had Bob and Lee do what Wisteria Lane residents do best: blackmail a neighbor. I wonder why Katherine didn't ask Bob and Lee to turn the fountain off from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. at first. Wouldn't that have been a good compromise to keep everyone happy?

The mystery

Hints about the second Mayfair mystery came to light at the end of the episode (the first mystery is the Dylan one in case you lost some memory cells... get it? Lost memory... okay bad joke, let's move on!). Sadly, most of us figured out that the reason the Mayfairs left Chicago was because Adam did something shocking at the hospital where he used to work. At least, we got confirmation we were right. What Adam did seems to be quite the thing since, as Bob says, everyone at the hospital still talks about it. If you have ideas as to what he may have done, comment below.

Other tidbits of interest:
  • Katherine got a wake up call when Adam didn't want to celebrate with her and pointed out that she had no friends.
  • Lee is being given the best lines the couple says. I was almost rooting for him when he told Susan that the fountain helped cover the annoying voice!
  • The kids telling Lynette that the tree house was a medical-terms-free zone was heartbreaking. It showed another way illness can impact kids and how that impact can, in return, affect the parents.

Mrs. M said "clothes" not "fashion" when referring to the fascism joke. Jesse looks GREAT he looks hotter than EVER with longer hair than in earlier episodes. You guys are crazy.

That was really the key part of the line that made it so brilliant, not what followed.

the speech Lee gives to Lynette to have her run is from this . . .

this is where its from!!!

"First they arrested the Communists -- but I was not a Communist, so I did nothing. Then they came for the Social Democrats, but I was not a Social Democrat, so I did nothing. Then they arrested the trade unionists -- and I did nothing because I was not one. And then they came for the Jews and the Catholics, but I was neither a Jew nor a Catholic and I did nothing. At last they came and arrested me -- and there was no one left to do anything about it."
- Rev Martin Niemoller (Nazi Prison Survivor)

-* this goes perfect with the theme of their confrontation about freedom of expression and saying that Catherine was a fascist.

"Absent t vote"? Seriously? Do you not fully understand what "absentee" means, or are you just not aware that it's a word?

Not a great show...

I liked how Katherine was "black mailed" but couldn't she just resign now and have someone else tell them to remove it?

I agree with them asking them to run the water fountain/art thing only during the day while people were awake....but why did Susan just not call the police! Obviously this could be a disturbing the peace issue especially in a residential neighborhood. And why would the "man of the house" in Mike not go talk to them about the noise?

It was obvious Edie hired the PI after last weeks show, that was a predictable ending. But Carlos lost his man-card to me in going to say I forgive you to John. I can see confronting him on a certain level if he needed to do that, but tell him I hope your wife one day cheats on you to so that you see the pain of it from the other side. Obviously it was as much or more Gabby's fault, but still can't see any man forgiving the person whom your wife has an affair with (unless you are on Grey's Anatomy and you are still friends and work with him).

As for the wait 6 months! How about we leave our partners then wait a month or so. Come on 6 months, he knows Gabby isn't going to wait 6 months for any man! (by the way another great outfit by Gabby in the hotel room, not as hot as last weeks nurses outfit, but still hot).

After all this time Bree still doesn't get her 2 kids or know what makes them tick? No wonder she wants a second chance with this kid and Orson, but come on lady get a clue as to the 2 kids you raised.

I liked how Lynette wanted to keep the treehouse for her kids and that was a good storyline.

And lastly, the vote was 14-14 with Susan voting twice, so....
a) did they not count the total number that was there to begin with to know that was too many votes?
b) I think Bree would have been there to help keep Bree from being the President or sent in their 2 votes via "absent t votes" with someone else!

Best line on the show was:

Ida: What is it with you gay people and fashion?

Lynette: "Fascism", Ida, not "fashion".

Bob [to Ida]: Though if you ever do want to talk fashion, we're here for you.

Gotta love Bob and Lee -- they fit in perfectly with everyone else on Wysteria Lane. It was absolutely great to see Katherine put in her place.

OK, Felicity Huffman deserves yet another Emmy, but considering Housewives is always in the comedy category I doubt she'll win. If it was in the drama category, where it's always belonged, she would win hands-down with this season's storyline. That look alone when the kids told her they didn't want to hear about the illness is worth an Emmy.

By the way, is it me, or does Jesse Metcalfe look like total crap. Talk about an actor who's career went into the toilet quick!

He had an affair with a patient and she had his love child probably. I doubt it will be something juicy like he artificially inseminated patients with his own semen.
