Dexter: The Dark Defender

(S02E05) If for some godforsaken reason you thought this season was progressing too slowly, I'd say this episode made up for it. The revelations this week were jaw-dropping, and there's just no way you don't have incredible anticipation for how next week turns out.

First, the Dark Defender. The whole scene in the comic book store and then Dexter's dream sequence were classic. And then let's bring into the mix the scene from the coffee bar, where Dexter overheard a couple of guys commending Dexter's doings. These people may be on Dexter's side now, but should he be caught, they'd be right on the other side of the fence. Hopefully Dexter doesn't start to get too comfortable with that sort of talk going around.

Certainly the most shocking moment of the episode (and extremely well-filmed) was the revelation of Laura Mosley, Dexter's mom, having had an affair with Harry. And now, with Harry dead and buried, Dexter's got nobody to question about it. Some commenters said they thought Deb knows more about Dexter's past than she's letting on, and I'm starting to wonder that myself now.

One of the brilliant moments of the season so far was Dexter going after one of his mom's killers. Dexter's call to Lila, sounding very much like an addict looking for a stray fix, was well played. That whole scene and the one following it made me wonder: what is Lila's motive? Her story about her boyfriend/dealer was interesting, and I'm thinking less that she's a killer like Dexter. So what is her story really? I mean, why is she hanging onto Dexter so closely, yet only teasing him a little here and there and not just jumping all over him?

I've been saying all along that Dexter's being completely careless and sloppy, and the end of this episode made me near literally yell at the television. "Dexter, take the boat OUT of the slip before cleaning it you imbecile!"

Stepping aside from Dexter's story for a bit, it's good to see Deb landing a good guy, though a spoiler I won't reveal here has me concerned that not everyone is who they appear to be. And, really, this season has been all about false appearances, so my guard is up for sure.

And what of Rita's mom, now taking up residence with Deb and the kids? Is that yet another wrench that's thrown in the works for Dexter? She's certainly a nosy one and doesn't trust Dexter at all, but will she really use up her time in Miami to figure out what Dexter's up to? Would Dexter stray from the code of Harry to cover his own ass? The more Dexter finds out about Harry's deceptive past, the more he may find he may not need to adhere to his code after all.

In case you missed it, there are some web-only features up on Showtime's website now, but last I checked they weren't working yet.

Besides all of the revelations, there were too many great quotable moments in order to pick just one. So here are two ...

Deb: "He's killing people, Dex. If Dad taught us one thing it was the value of human life."
Dexter (thinking): "Yeah but I think we had different homework assignments."

Dexter: "The Dark Defender. Nah, Miami's too hot for all that leather."

Yep, I am beginning to have suspisions too that Harry might be Dex's biodad. Is he Deb's biodad?

harry can't be dexter's father. remember that dexter had his biological father's blood checked against his own, and that it was a positive match?

Agreed.
The show must continue to show that Dexter is not, and never will be, "one of us". He must continue to kill by Harry's code or otherwise or the show dies. Any attempts to cure him will undoubtedly fail and once again he'll be out and about doing what he does best.

The way I see it, Lila is a guilt ridden addict recovering from her habit and the accidental murder of her boyfriend; she desperately needs to save someone in order to save herself - sadly, she chose the one guy she can't cure. It seems to be more of a coincidence than not that all the advice she has for Dexter about his fake addiction and state of being also applies to his real addiction - killing human beings.

Every time Dex responds to Lila's "quick tips", she thinks it's about heroine addiction but it's really about his compulsion to chop somebody up and getting away with it - luckily, it's only bad guys for now. Remember, he was forced into the NA meetings because he had to quickly respond to Rita's concerns and suspicions about his odd behavior. His encounter with Lila at the NA meeting was not planned as suggested by other fans and he clearly resented her helpfulness. Lila is clueless about him but she'll soon find out and shockingly [not really] it won't faze her.

Rudy understood Dex because they were reborn together as serial killers during their mother's death.
Lila understands Dex as long as she thinks he has a heroine habit...beyond that, who knows. Still, I believe she has it in her to accept him for what he really is.

Oh and I think you're (khamel) right - he won't be cured. In fact I think all this openness and vulnerability towards Lila is gonna backfire - she wants more from him that he's willing to give.

Dexter does have emotions and they're not just anger and fear - and it couldn't have been clearer in this episode. His breakdown showed that he craves love and companionship and someone who knows him. He was helpless - in fact, i think he was the most human he's ever been - He's come a long way from saying "I care about people as much as I care about lawn furniture".

but I agree, the camera most likely won't be a big deal - either he'll figure it out before anyone else does or he could say he was doing some investigation around the area or his own boat to find out how the killer might've done it.

i think one thing that we need to remember is that dexter (even though we all love him) is a sociopath. he has no feelings and his only real emotions are fear and anger (and seemingly only the fear of getting caught, not of other people). he follows a strict moral code given to him by his father because without that, he would certainly be in jail or dead by now. he 'loves' rita and his sister but not in any real sense. he cares for them but i'm not sure what that even means, if its any different than an animal caring for its master.

i love this show because it hasn't forgotten or moved away from the fact that he is a sociopath and although hes trying to 'cure' himself, i have a feeling its going to fail miserably (not just because a show about a serial killer who doesn't kill would get canceled).

another great episode and i doubt the camera is going to be a huge deal, just another bump on the road or likely a red herring.

Do we know anything about Dexter's real father? Is it possible, now that we know of the affair between Dexter's mother and Harry, that Harry could be Dexter's real father? It would explain why Harry took Dexter after his mother's murder and just left Brian alone.
