Is The Office getting a spinoff?

by Bob Sassone, posted Oct 30th 2007 3:18PM

The OfficeI'm really not sure how I feel about this information.

Michael Ausiello is reporting that NBC and the people behind The Office are thinking about creating a spinoff of the sitcom. The plan is to introduce several new characters on The Office and then later spin them off into their own show (none of the original Office cast would be on the new show). I'm not sure why Ausiello calls this paying a major compliment to Grey's Anatomy (what, there weren't spinoffs before Private Practice?), and I'm not sure if I like this idea or not.

On the one hand, a spinoff is always an iffy thing. I mean, if producers and writers have an original concept for a show, why not just pitch it and launch it on its own (besides the aspect of having a popular show to leap off from)? On the other hand, I'm willing to give any show a chance, because it's all in the writing and casting. A show could be about turnip farmers or a behind the scenes look at a comedy show, as long as it's well written and acted, it doesn't matter. Then again, it seems like NBC is going overboard. First we had needless hour-long episodes, and now a spinoff.

Vance Refrigeration all the way! I like it when big Bob pops up. A spin-off would flesh out that character and give us a whole new staff to laugh at, instead of taking members away from The Office. Phyllis would have to show up occasionally, of course. Maybe Michael too. I like it when he and Bob are at odds:)

They could do a Young Michael Scott series, framing it with the same storytelling device as in HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER or EVERYBODY HATES CHRIS: The documentary team asking Michael Scott about something and the Michael telling about some incident when he was an employee at Dunder Mifflin.

@ 12 -- I knew I should have done something with that idea I had a few years ago.... My only concern now is Darryl's level of involvement in this season.

I imagine it going down like this. There'll be some problem in the offices of Dunder/Mifflin like cockroaches or mold or fire or something like that, and a crew of exterminators or cleaners or firefighters will come in to take care of it, and the documentary crew would follow them around while everyone else is on paid leave, and then that spins off into a new show. It could have quirky characters, similar vibes, and be really awesome. Or it could be stupid, who knows.

How about a show that is all about the HR department at Dunder Mifflin corporate? It would give us opportunities to see all of the issues at all of the branches and realize that Scranton isn't the only problem. Add to this the corporate nonsense that happens and you'd have a decent show that would readily provide guest star appearances from our favorite show.

I loved the hour long episodes. they were such a treat to start off the season. The Office isn't about "ooh, what's gonna happen next, ooh, that was super-sexy" it's just good to watch.

I've been wondering about a spin off for a while... it seems obvious... but it would have to be a Beet Farm show or something like that, and they should take heed of the failed sitcom spin offs, not make it the Ryan Show in New Jersey and now he's a repair man. They need a great cast and an excellent supporting cast that can slowly be brought to the front, like they have in the Office.

I agree with the 45, 45, 30 minutes block. I loved when they did that last season.

I, too, was totally thinking of Dwight's brother and the Beets Motel for a spin-off!

I'd religiously watch a show about Mose, whether it be of the 30 or 60 minute variety.
