Nielsen ratings for the week ending October 28

by Bob Sassone, posted Oct 30th 2007 6:22PM

Dancing with the StarsHere are the weekly Nielsen ratings, by number of viewers.

Week after week I post these numbers, and one thing is always abundantly clear: NBC really doesn't have any big, consistent hits on its hands. Sure, Heroes sneaks in once in a while, maybe a Law and Order: SVU here and there or a Deal Or No Deal, but the top 20 is always filled with reality shows, the CSI shows, and doctor shows. I'm looking at this list, and if you take out The World Series - which I watched only because I'm a Red Sox fan - I only watch one of these shows: 60 Minutes. I'm either really out of touch or there are better shows on TV right now (I always fear the former but pray for the latter).

And can someone tell me what Extreme Makeover: Home Edition means? Is there an edition outside, or in space?

1. Dancing with the Stars - Mon (ABC)

2. World Series - Game 4 (FOX)
3. Desperate Housewives (ABC)
4. Grey's Anatomy (ABC)
5. House (FOX)
6. Dancing with the Stars - Tues (ABC)
7. NCIS (CBS)
8. World Series - Game 2 (FOX)
9. World Series - Game 1 (FOX )
10. CSI: Miami (CBS)
11. Criminal Minds (CBS)
12. CSI (ABC)
13. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (ABC)
14. Survivor (CBS)
15. World Series - Game 3 (FOX)
16. Two and a Half Men (CBS)
17. CSI: NY (CBS)
18. Samantha Who? (ABC)
19. World Series - Game 5 Pregame (FOX)
20. 60 Minutes (CBS)

The only new shows I LOVE are Dirty, Sexy Money and Samantha Who?. It would be a complete shame if DSM got cancelled!!! People start watching!!!! I can't believe Back to You has been renewed and DSM hasn't!! The other show that needs to be renewed is Damages.

There's only ONE show i watch on that list and it's House, like Bob said, are we just out of touch?, no one i know watches any of these shows. It's pathetic really.

And i watch ALOT of shows, so that means of all the shows i currently watch only House will get a new season? So that means Prison Break, Heroes, Journeyman, Reaper, Bionic Woman,Chuck,Dirty Sexy Money, Cane,Pushing Daisies,Smallville,Supernatural will all get cancelled or not get renewed? That's freaking ridiculous!

And it's like this EVERY SINGLE YEAR! I don't even know why networks even TRY to create new shows or even less serial shows, they could just have the same shows year after year and still win in ratings! Why try new things when the american people obviously don't want it?

It pisses me off since i'm such a huge TV lover, and every year 85% of the new shows i start watching get cancelled because all the stupid americans with the nielsen boxes decide they only want procedurals, reality shows and sitcoms.

Like i said in another post, they should REALLY destroy those nielsen boxes or give them to more intelligent people!

/end rant

I still watch maybe 6 shows out of the top 20, but I do wish Journeyman would make the list. I think it's well written and always interesting. But the drama that is on list that I really like is Criminal Minds. It's a nic departure from the CSI overload on the schedule. I didn't watch CM the first season because it was n the same time as Lost, but since Lost went AWOL, I've really taken to CM. I hope they don't put them on at the same time when Lost does return.

The only thing that makes me happy about this list is that Private Practice didn't make it (I love House, but it's always on the list, so ... eh. I tolerate CSI, and it is always on the list too. I like Desperate Housewives and 60 minutes too, but again, its permanent top or near top drama status doesn't thrill me)

The thing is, NBC really does have the best new dramas. Chuck (which I am the least thrilled about of all the new NBC dramas, but is still better than most of the rest of the new batch), Journeyman, Life are really strong, well acted, well written shows. Don't know why more people don't watch them.

I have watched some of those shows on the list in the past, notably CSI and CSI Miami. I got tired of those shows. The Miniature Killer brought me back for a bit with CSI, but I usually just rent it on DVD if I hear it's good. In fact the only show that is a regular on the list that I still watch on is Grey's (mostly to placate my wife). Ugly Betty and Heroes also make the list and I watch those religiously.

Finally, someone noticed nbc's deserved suckage. And you've overstated Heroes' success (?); it was top twenty for the premiere only (and still third in its timeslot). The only show you didn't mention that has been better than third in its timeslot is Las Vegas.

Not that I watch it, but changing any show's title is dangerous for those who don't avidly follow such news (i.e., those who don't read TV Squad or other news sites regularly!). I mean, is SciFi Channel gonna retitle "Stargate Atlantis" as "Stargate" now that SG-1 is off the air? If the original L&O or CSI were to go away, do they move that title to one of the respective spinoffs? I'm sure I'm forgetting some recent show here, but I think I've made my point.
