How would you grade this season's new and returning shows?

by Richard Keller, posted Nov 1st 2007 9:05PM

AOL TV gives Big Shots an 'F' on their fall TV Scorecard. What would you rate it.Now that the fall season is hitting the two-month-old mark it's probably safe enough to start grading how some of the new and returning shows are doing. Our friends over at AOL Television have done such a thing and are giving you a chance to grade the TV shows as well.

Thirty shows were chosen for their fall TV scorecard and range from long-running shows such as CSI and ER to fresh out of the box programs like Pushing Daisies and Private Practice. The highest marks go out to House, which has reinvented itself this season with a set of new doctors for Greg House to abuse; Pushing Daises, which AOL TV describes as the best new show of the season; Ugly Betty, a show that has yet to enter a sophomore slump; Reaper, one of the brighter spots for the slumping CW network; Desperate Housewives, 30 Rock and Friday Night Lights.

At the bottom of the list are the new CBS vampire series Moonlight (which I totally agree about), Big Shots and Prison Break. Somewhere in the middle are the shows ER, Grey's Anatomy, Carpoolers, Cavemen (?), Dirty Sexy Money, Samantha Who, Journeyman and Private Practice.

For the most part I agree with the grades AOL Television has given out. For example, while my wife really likes Private Practice I'm not really feeling the love with that show. I do have to differ with them on the grade of 'C' that they gave to ER. Even though the show is in its last days (the series looks like it will end by the end of this season) it has been much more exciting these last few seasons. I Also differ a bit with their opinion of Samantha Who?. Frankly, I'd rather see more of good Samantha than extra funny flashbacks of funny Samantha.

What I was surprised about was the lack of shows like Bones and Life. From the reviews I do on these shows both are fan favorites. Yet, nary a peep about them on the scorecard. That's too bad because these are two shows that seem to have a long-term life ahead of them.

Life (NBC) has captured my imagination and loyalties as no other of the new shows have. I can't believe that NBC isn't promoting this show like wild. Very sad that Bionic Woman is almost unwatchable (I had hopes) and yet gets the lion's share of NBC focus. Go figure!

The new series Life is my favorite this year. I hope it doesn't get cancelled for another stupid game show or reality show. Charlie Crews is a great character, quielty sexy and Reese is perfectly cast as his partner. The writing is very, very good. Please do not take this show off the air, although you could give it an earlier time slot.

I gave everything an A. (I'm really sensitive about people dissing television shows.)

I really don't get people that complain about shows, Heroes for example, that have too many characters. To me, it's just a bunch of new stories to get excited about. What's the problem? Sure, one week I may not get to see a favorite character, but that's okay. There's always next week, and I'm sure it'll all even out to equal time. Is it that people can't keep track of all those characters? Because I've never had a problem with large casts. Lost came on when I was thirteen, and I not got, well, lost in the mulitudes of characters. I really don't understand what all the "Arrgh, too many characters!" fuss is about.

I can't believe AOL gave some shows F's. That's just mean. If you don't have anything nice to say... well, why not?

heroes: A-, not quite as exciting as last year @ this time, but still great stuff

pushing daisies: B+, good and original stuff, but i agree w/ the commenter that said chuck can get a little annoying.

bionic woman: C, i tuned it 'cause it's sci-fi, but it's not really been thrilling me at all. as of yet, i haven't cared too much about the characters.

grey's anatomy: B, it's been pretty good, but not great. the show overall lost points w/ me last season w/ meredith "drowning" stuff. i know that's not this season, but it made me lose respect for the show. plus, just writing off burke as they did is ridiculous.

chuck: C, meh. i watch, but i don't ever laugh really hard. i do, however, care about the characters. so they've got something decent going on.

journeyman: B, it seems like it's going somewhere bigger, but i've not really gotten that excited about it.

moonlight: A, omg i can't believe the aol poll results are also majority "A" i wasn't even planning on watching this show, but tivo'd it @ the last minute and was pleasantly surprised (not by the first episode, mind you). alex o'loughlin and sophia myles are great and the show is definitely getting better every week. i really hope this one sticks around for a good, long while.

the big bang theory: B, tons of cliche's, but as a nerd and a sister of a physicist...they're cliche's for a reason. although, i don't care for penny that much, sheldon is awesome!

reaper: A, this show was the one that had me the most @ the beginning of the season. it's starting to get a little predictable now, but w/ this new weirdness w/ sam's dad i'm sure it'll freshen up. this show is as funny as chuck SHOULD be.

Heroes - A little slow to start this season, but I have a feeling that will change. The virus storyline feels like a rehash of the bomb storyline in the slow build-up to the end of the season.

Prison Break - Back in fine action form (although I'm not happy about the Michael/Sara thing being done before it even got started: another "smart" decision from Fox execs)!

Pushing Daisies - Didn't want to add this show, but glad I did. Intriguing characters with intriguing storylines.

The Office - Still clever and enjoyable.

Bionic Woman - I've actually been sucked into this one. The standalone episodes have been good, and I think that once they start fleshing out the Andros/Berkut backstory, it will really get rolling.

Big Shots - What a surprise! Before I even saw this show, I thought "male 'Sex In the City"! Was I wrong. Great character performances all around and clever, fast pacing keep this going for me.

Dexter - Michael C. Hall rocks! He makes me want to cheer on the serial killer! Deserves an Emmy for Best Actor.

Brotherhood - Grim and gritty class struggles at their finest. Clarke and Isaacs are brilliant as brothers at opposite ends of the spectrum who might not be as different as they think and are united by the family bond.

My favorite new show of the season is "Life." Smart, interesting, funny, great characters, genre-broadening --- what more could a person want? Why isn't the network promoting it more?

I absolutely LOVE "MOONLIGHT" so I give it an "A", (not sure if this posted correctly the first time) can't stand "Pushing Daisies". I watch more CBS shows now just so I can see "Moonlight" promos!! How will the writers' strike affect these shows?

I adore Big Bang Theory. I am consistantly laughing throughout -- sometimes more than HIMYM. Yeah, it's cliched, but I find myself im-ing lines to those who don't watch.

And I identify with it. A group of people who don't get the unwritten social rules trying to understand them? That is my life!

For what it's worth, the Wall Street Journal graded the Bee Movie in today's edition. The verdict (on an A-F scale): Z.

I know AOL owns TVSquad, but do you guys have to whore out every uneducated self serving thing they publish?
