Brothers and Sisters: Two Places

Robert and Isaac(S02E06) "I didn't want this baby."-- Robert McAllister

I am starting to regret every time I have criticized the show for being too prone to hijinks and slapstick, because after the past two episodes, I would love to have Robert's crazy family show up again so they can all jump into the pool. The best way to describe this episode is maudlin. No wonder Justin is taking more pain meds. This is some pretty depressing stuff, and it doesn't look like it's going to get happier anytime soon. Is this the writers' way of dealing with the impending strike? A little doom and gloom for everyone? And is Tommy growing a mustache, and could someone please call his agent and tell him to shave it?

Isaac

Let's talk about Isaac, because his presence was really pivotal in this episode. What was Isaac's purpose? On the surface, he is a political analyst and adviser who helps campaigns with damage control. In actuality, he can see both sides of the field so clearly that not only is he capable of staving off crises, he is equally skilled at creating them. Robert hates him for leaking the fact that Jason is gay in Robert's senatorial race ten years ago. Isaac gives Robert advice about how to leak damaging information about his opponent, who has secreted away a child with special needs, yet continues to vote against legislation that would help children with special needs.

Isaac specializes in making people's private pain and intimate shame public so that he can manipulate the politics of campaigns. He clearly doesn't think that Robert has the cajones to be president, if Robert finds the necessary politicking so distasteful.

In light of these facts, and considering how much Robert despises Isaac, why on earth would Robert make Isaac the one person he tells that he didn't want to have a baby? Doesn't he know that for the right price, Robert can slay him with this information? Mr. Family Values? Not to mention the fact that Isaac has already made his affections for Kitty clear: Is he going to stand by quietly and a) let Robert become president and b) let Kitty marry a guy who doesn't want to have any more children?

We have finally found the crack in Robert's shining armor. And it's very human, and also understandable. But for Kitty, it's probably a deal breaker.

Kitty

Kitty, of course, has just had a miscarriage, and she is devastated. In the course of a few minutes, she discovered that she wasn't going to have a baby or a wedding. Not that they have postponed the wedding forever (yet). But whether or not the wedding will happen at all now is very much up in the air. Robert and Kitty need to figure out whether having children together is something that they both want and need. I think it's pretty clear from Kitty's excitement about her pregnancy and her devastation about her miscarriage (please don't dismiss it as simply hormones) that she wants a baby.

Kevin

Kevin is getting closer to Scotty. How long do you think he can not hear from Jason and have Scotty being adorable on the air mattress before they sleep together? I loved how Scotty said, "If you're mad at Jason, I got The Exorcist," and that is the movie Kevin wanted to start with. Simple, effective. I wish they hadn't made Scotty take so many steps back financially, though, given his history with Kevin from last season. Hopefully Kevin has matured enough now not to trample all over Scotty this time, even if he didn't mean to last time. The Walkers have never exactly known what it's like to suffer financially, despite the bankruptcy scare with Ojai last year.

Justin

Justin's storyline is becoming boring and irritating. Lord, I hope they resolve this next week. Justin pops pills and gets high. Yawn. We did this already. I know he is feeling guilty about coming home when his friends are dying, but that needs to be explored more, and not just tossed out as a lame excuse for getting high. So, is Rebecca pissed at Justin for abusing drugs again, like she predicted he would? Or is Rebecca dealing with feelings of jealousy at seeing Justin and Lena making out that she shouldn't, as his sister, have to deal with? Whichever it is, it's probably time for Rebecca to go home, anyway.

Tommy

Lameass. Cheater. Stupid. Stupid storyline. Hate it. Hate Lena. Shave the damn fuzz above your lip. What is it about Balthazar Getty that they give him such awful women to romance? Julia is a wet rag, and Lena is just a manipulative little bitch. Somebody cast a brunette next time.

Sarah

Once again, this storyline was spot on. Paige's acting out was terrific. These writers do know how to show rather than tell, even though then they feel that they have to explain things a little. But for the most part, Paige's anger at the custody situation and feeling torn between her parents was terrific and very appropriate. Of course Joe had to be a dick about Paige running away during her first visit with Sarah. The only thing I didn't believe is that Joe would alter the custody agreement immediately after that, rather than using it as ammunition for fighting for full custody permanently. It's a great storyline, even if it is depressing as hell. They could have explored it for awhile longer rather than settling things in two episodes. I bet we won't see Joe again, because why would we have to now?

And I have to wonder how much the writers are strapped and constrained by both the writers' strike (as of this moment, it may be delayed a few days if you believe Variety, and Nikki Finke of Deadline Hollywood Daily is live blogging updates about the strike as of this writing) and the actor's own schedule. The writers have been pretty silent about all of it on their own blog, but there was a post last week that indicated that tensions are running high. They hope that whatever happens is over quickly. And so do we.

On a final note, commenters have wondered about the closing songs. It was a Regina Spektor song at the end, "A Field Below," when Nora was holding Kitty.

I love Danny Glover. His acting of Isaac was so interesting: manipulative guy that can get things done. I hope he comes back.

You forgot about Uncle Saul, is he gay or not? What is his deal? I would love for Rob Lowe to stay on, I love Kitty and him together. As for Rebecca and Justin, I think it is more jealousy then the drugs at least that is the impression I get.

Maria, what a disgusting thing to say about Paige. I think she is adorable and a great young actress. Somewhere in your life you went terribly wrong if you can speak as you did with such a total lack of sensitivity. I think YOU have an ugly soul.

I wish Tommy would have been the one to walk in on Justin and Lena in the hallway.

I want Kitty and Robert to get married just so Rob Lowe stays on the show.

I thought the Robert speech to Isaac about losing the baby was contradictory. I guess he felt contradictory so maybe he will end up deciding he does want a baby with Kitty.

This show has really hit home for me as if someone was writing what was going on in my own home.
My son,Justin Walter(notice how close the name is to Justin on the show) has just come back from Iraq and we as a family are dealing with similar issues.
No one deserved an award more than Sally Field. She was my voice and captured the pain and fear in my heart and I'm sure for all the other mother's who's child is fighting a god damn useless war.
I have NEVER done a blog for anything before, this show is the most accurate to a lot of issues in the world.

Is anyone else hoping that Nora had an affair, which produced Justin, which could mean that Justin and Rebecca could get together?

Maybe I should be a writer.

Oh, and the last song? Gimme a break. Reminds me of Sand And Water from an ER episode. Too similar.

You were spot on with your reflections and comments! The stuff about Justin and Tommy...yes yes yes to all you have said.
I have a question. What does Rebecca do other than stay at home with Justin? Doesnt she have any bills? I thought she was going to school? Tommy needs to shave AND Joe needs to bathe! For petes sakes he looks disgusting always. How would any one want him? Ick.
Its kind of crazy that no one has any social life outside their own self absorbed family.
Paige is ugly. She has that Kelsey Grammar big forehead and squished face. If that sounds mean, or whatever, you are correct. I just couldnt get past that every time I see her.
Oh-I dont 'heart' Robert anymore.
