ER could get another year

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 5th 2007 4:21PM

John WellsThere's been talk for the last several months - and common wisdom would logically conclude - that this was going to be the last year for NBC's long running medical drama ER. The show has been on for 14 years and the ratings don't really justify spending the money on another season. But hold on ER fans ...

At a party celebrating the show's 300th episode (300 episodes? Yikes), producer John Wells said that he is going to being negotiations with NBC later this month to bring the show back for another year in the 2008-09 season. The ratings aren't that bad, and the network could cut costs in some way and make it doable.

Goran Visnjic and Mekhi Phifer are already leaving the show, and I'm sure Maura Tierney won't be far behind. Maybe they can bring Mark Green back from the dead and also pay George Clooney $100 million for one last season.

I'd love to see how it ends soon, especially if Carter comes back. But I still watch and enjoy it every week. Rather than compare it to itself- against anything else on TV it's still pretty damn good- sometimes even great.

The show can be hit or miss, but I'll cop to still watching it when I can.

It does kind of annoy me though that no one can ever just leave the show, they either die of cancer, loose their legs or get blown up in Iraq etc.

John Stamos is absolutely brutal, there is no better time to make a sandwich then when he shows up on screen (I guess I wouldn't mind if his charachter got cancer and had his legs blown off in Iraq).

I love er and it's gotten better with the last season. Either way I was there for the first episode and I'll be there for the last.

1.) The show will never be as great as it was in the years when Mark Greene was still alive
2.) The show was extremely weird as long as Romano was still alive. I kind of hated it
3.) The show is so/so at the moment and pretty much watchable. They got rid of all the addiction problems (Carter et al) which is a big plus (including getting rid of Sally Field who IMHO ruined the whole show and is barely sufferable on "Brothers & Sister). Hopefully they won't pick the addiction storyline up again.

I have seen it recently, I try to watch a little a year, the show isn't terrible as some shows, but not nearly as great as it was years and years ago.

As TV Squad's resident reviewer or 'ER' I'd like to ask those who commented a question: have you watched 'ER' recently? There is no doubt that the seasons after Mark Greene died were kind of crazy, especially around 10-12. However, even with the additions to the cast the show is doing better. I would recommend giving it at least one more chance.

I don't count 7-8 seasons as a "few lackluster seasons".

I think ER has had a great comeback after a few lackluster season, so this is great news!
