Bionic Woman: The List

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 8th 2007 12:20AM

Bionic Woman(S01E06) "I bet you haven't seen a movie made before 1983." - Tom, to Jaime

Does anyone else think that Jaime is sort of dumb? I mean, she's hot and can fight and seems to be an OK spy-type person, but there doesn't seem to be anything else going on up there. If she wasn't a spy, she'd be back at the bar, banging random dudes and drinking a lot and arguing with her sister all the time. The above quote from Tom illustrates that. I bet she's not really interested in anything and seems rather dull to me. Or maybe it's just the way Michelle Ryan is playing her. Did I mention she's hot?

I'm glad the show has gone in a different direction the past couple of weeks, introducing secret agent Tom and having him and Jaime go on assignments together. Yeah, it can sometimes go a little overboard with the cute banter, but I like that she has a good guy partner she can hang out with besides Antonio and Jonas. I can't wait until Sarah meets Tom. You know she's going to have some wiseass comment to make about his relationship with Jaime.

I liked this episode. No Katee Sackhoff, but it makes sense not to have her on every week. The bad guy here was quite good, and Nathan calling him "Casino Royale" made me chuckle out loud because I was thinking the same exact thing.

This whole list plot has been done before, on everything from the original I Spy series to the first Mission: Impossible flick. But it's a good plot. We got some good fight scenes, some good banter back and forth, and even got that international feel with a trip to Paris. I had to laugh though when Jaime looked out the hotel room window and said "wow, look at that view!" Which actually meant, "wow, look at that matte painting of the Eifffel Tower!" Why does every hotel room on TV shows overlook the Eiffel Tower?

I also had to shake my head at the whole "locked in the wine vault" scene (and why couldn't Jaime immediately knock down the door with her bionics?), and even Ruth said "getting locked in the wine vault is so cliche." At first I laughed and then I thought, are they just going to have self-aware one liners to joke away cliched scenes?

The subplot with the sister has gone from slightly annoying to completely annoying. Everytime they switched back to her damn party I felt like it was The O.C. or something, even if Jonas was involved later. We need more spy stuff and little sis to be sent to a boarding school in Switzerland.

Do you like the character of Tom?
Yes! They work well together.194 (54.6%)
Eh. He's OK. Hope he's not in every episode.117 (33.0%)
No, get rid of him.44 (12.4%)

This Jaime was dating a guy she hardly knew anything about and finds out she's pregnant to only loose the baby in a purposeful auto collision. Is taken to some secret "bat cave" where she is given the best in bionics through surgery. Is healed physically and emotionally within what, a day? Is back at home with her sister (who she is also raising because of the recent loss of their parents) before she is even missed. Baby lost in premiere episode and by the next few, baby's daddy is killed too. Somehow through all this she has the ability to become a convincing spy and forms a type of alliance with the woman responsible for both the deaths of her baby, boyfriend, and her forever life altering experience. Yet seems to already have a strong attraction for this Tom guy and is just getting on fine with life. Come on... At this point the original bionic woman concept makes more sense ( a semi pro tennis player critically injured in a parachute accident who happens to be friends with a guy who also just went through bionic replacement due to a critial accident -six million dollar man).

This show finally found its niche. From feminist to a ass-kicking superheroine with some element of romance. Keep up this good work.

I do not understand why so many people are whining about this show. What in the world are they expecting ? People keep bringing up "Alias," but that show was just better in the action scenes, but the story was way too complicated and the actress sucked.

While my Wednesday schedule does not permit to watch it on TV, I will always watch it on the internet.

Hey, gang, you disappointed by or hating this show? I really suggest you give Supernatural a try -- it's miles ahead of almost all the current sci-fi series.

I still enjoy this show. I like the cocky, funny, teasing-each-other behavior between those two spies. It reminds me of Sean Connery from older James Bond series and so unlike more serious newer one like Casino Royale. However, there is still a hole on which is how the spy thief single handedly takes cares everyone and disappear so fast. This episode also shows the usefulness of Jaime’s bionic power, she uses all her bionic abilities while still trying not to get them exposed. It is correct what Jae says in the training,” You Have to Be Able to Neutralize the Enemy in Public without Anyone Ever Seeing”. One of them is to show her martial arts prowess to conceal them.

I finally realized what bothered me about this show, especially after some of the drama from the early episodes -- it's that when she kicks people bionically, in heels, they fly 20 feet away.

Part of this comes from having studied martial arts, and part of this also comes from having seen Cronenburg's "The Fly" (you know what I'm talking about now). But there is some fundamental drama in being bionic and fighting people with that power that the show simply refuses to touch, because it doesn't know just how "Felicity" it wants to be with her sister and her love interests.

The power thing may seem a little fanboy-ish to some readers (like arguing what Wolverine's claws can and can't cut through), but in fact it points to the best that sci-fi can bring to a story: take a world we know now, add something that could be on our horizon, and see how it plays out in psychology and society. The show premise has huge potential for investigating the nature of power in both positive and negative lights (the raw empowerment Jamie has even though it is all given and controlled by the group), but it keeps dropping the ball.

It's as if they wished they were making Wonder Woman instead of Bionic Woman.

Jonathan, I don't like BSG at all. I watched the pilot/first episode and didn't really get it. Haven't watched since.

I hate BW. Hate is too strong a word actually. I don't even dislike the show much. It's just not worth wasting any time watching. What a dissappointment from how great this show could have been.

It's hard to believe this is the best sci-fi/action show a major network could get on the air. No wonder sci-fi is dying (or dead) on television.

Is it only the BSG nerds that don't like this show? I really can't tell. While i agree it isn't amazing it really isn't as bad as some of you make it out to be!

I was really hoping this show would delight me as much as Alias did, but each week I am a bit more disappointed. I love spy shows, especially with strong women, but this one fails to deliver.

One of the biggest problems is the actress who plays Jaime just isn't right for the part. Every week she feels "off" somehow, plus she is rather annoying. For example, whenever she is fighting she makes these really pathetic girly noises that make me cringe.

Jaime's character is also too stereotypical in all the bad ways (and why is her name spelled like that?). What woman still talks about The Rules?? Does she have any hobbies, goals, or hopes besides taking care of her sister? I thought the sister was supposed to be a computer hacker and that she would team up with Jaime, which sounded dumb at the beginning of the show, but would be better than the stuff going on with her right now.

The biggest thing that bothers me is that Jaime just had her fiance die (who she was going to have a baby with) and yet doesn't seem to care one bit about it, and is already willing to pounce on the next guy that comes along (not to mention that guy in the bathroom at the bar a few episodes back). I'm sorry, but if you're over a guy you loved that fast I'm not sure you're the kind of girl we want to root for.

I really wanted this show to work. I was excited waiting for it to come on and now, it is awful. I mean really, the sister's role is not necessary, the fight scenes look like they were done by a kid, and the writing is horrible. I mean they didn't spend $50million on Sydney and she could whip this new Jamie Sommer's behind. Come on..get away from the crappy Dawson's Creek sister stuff and get to more of the action....Even in the 1970's the original Bionic Woman spent more time fighting the bad guys and uncovering things....The new Jamie Sommers seems dumb and couldn't fight her way out of a paper back...don't let me talk about the jumping...

The only good thing to come from this show IMO was that I probably would have never taken a look at Life which airs after it.

Another case of the follow up show being superior to its lead in.
