Dexter: That Night, A Forest Grew

(S02E07) Well now, it seems the majority of viewers thought there was no way in hell that Deb was going to be getting together with Lundy. In fact, 198 of 288 of you thought there was no way. Looks like the writers threw you for a loop this time around.

Anyway, that's a pretty insignificant storyline given what happened in this episode. We've got Dexter's manifesto and its fallout, and of course Dexter framing Doakes in a big way.

Dexter's contact at City Hall, Camilla, made another appearance in this episode, which of course we knew couldn't mean anything good. As sweet a woman as she is, she's certainly a loose end that may continue to haunt Dexter for as long as she lives, not just until she retires in a year.

I think it's clear now what Lila's addiction is -- more like an affliction. She's either truly trying to recover from being a psycho stalker-girlfriend or she simply uses NA meetings to find unsuspecting helpless men to latch onto. Most likely she's the latter, and I'm sure Dexter's quickly going to figure that one out.

Last week I polled everyone asking, hypothetically, who Dexter would most likely kill first. It sure seems that, so far, Gayle's out of the running. Dear God, though -- that woman is certifiable. Rita's amazing for not being more messed up from being raised by that loon.

I think Deb's right in that Dexter fucked up with Rita. I really believe the two of them will be back together soon enough. If nothing else, the kids will be a big factor in making the two of them reassess what they mean to each other and what each of them is willing to forgive or put up with.

Now, the biggest moment of the episode is a tossup between what happened between Doakes and the final revelation by the investigative team on Dexter's manifesto. Now, here's the thing that's bugging be about this season so far. Last season I don't think I was alone in guessing who the Ice Truck Killer was early on, so the reveal wasn't exactly a surprise, though it was an awesome season regardless. I feel that the same thing is happening this season, and it's pretty clear now -- more than ever -- that Dexter is going to frame Doakes into looking like the Bay Harbor Butcher. Seriously, it's the only way out of his predicament, especially with the heat coming down on him hard and fast.

Before tonight's episode I would have guessed that Lila could possibly be used as a scapegoat for Dexter, though with the whole "law enforcement" angle, there's just no way that can happen unless she's a former cop and we don't know it.

So, what's Dex going to do to keep everyone off his tail next week? What more will Lila resort to to keep Dexter her faithful little puppy?

Two best quotes of the episode:

Lila: "Pardon my tits."

and

Matsuka: "He's a Trekker. That shit's straight from Deep Space Nine!"
Batista: "What? Mark Twain said that. It's one his most famous quotes."
Special Agent: "Twain was never on Deep Space Nine. He was on Next Generation."

Who's going down for the Bay Harbor Butcherings?
Doakes362 (47.0%)
Lila67 (8.7%)
Dexter39 (5.1%)
Someone else entirely303 (39.3%)

So does nobody actually go to N.A. meetings for a drug problem?

I feel kind of stupid but I still don't get the lightbulb thing at the end. At first, a light was broken, but she had to break another one to get it fixed? And then they do get fixed, and somehow this is very meaningful? Enough to end an episode with? I feel like I'm missing something.

Thank you so much Ben! Yes, it's been awhile since I've read the book, but it's all coming back to me now.

Brad asks when Dexter has enjoyed sex - he's not sexually inclined, he's more asexual, I think, but he is a fully functional man, so of course he would respond physically to stimulus. He doesn't enjoy intimacy - emotional connection - something entirely different from sex. Think about how many serial killers are also rapists and fetishists, some cannibals, some "trophy" collectors.

I do agree though, that Dexter is becoming more emotional, but they are the emotions of a child (I have a 4 year old) - demanding, demands for attention, instant gratification, anger, resentment, petulance, bit of Oedipal complex... I don't think we'll really be seeing a lot of real growth in Dexter - he's really stunted at the crisis point of his Mom's murder.

But I love him anyways.

I think the phrase "that night, a forest grew" comes from the children's book, Where The Wild Things Are.

From wikipedia:

The book tells the story of Max, who one evening plays around his home, "making mischief" in a wolf costume (chasing the dog with a fork, etc.). As punishment, his mother sends him to bed without supper. In his room, a mysterious, wild forest grows out of his imagination, and Max journeys to the land of the Wild Things. They are fearsome-looking monsters, but Max conquers them with a scary look and he is made the King of the Wild Things. However, he soon finds himself lonely and homesick, and he returns home to his bedroom. He finds his supper waiting for him ... "And it was still hot."

I thought the episode was fantastic, as the whole series so far. I agree that Lila is a pyromaniac, she burned a house down, all the candles, and burning her place down as well. As someone in recovery, I can tell you alcohol is off limits regardless of drug of choice, especially from a sponsor. One other thing of notice was how she still had the ring on her ring finger throughout the episode. Notice how the her hand seemed to be in view of the camera on purpose. I think Deb is great, the actress has done a lot with the character compared to the book. I also agree that it seems more and more that Dexter is going to set up Doakes.

I loooved how Dexter set up Doakes, it was so good I highfived my husband!

Now, it's driving me crazy, I'm a prolific reader of fairytales. Anyone else have a clue what fairytale the title "That Night, a Forest Grew" is from? Jack and the Beanstalk? Sleeping Beauty? I wish I could recall it.

BTW - I myself like fossils, but can't anyone see that Deb has Daddy issues? Harry there spent a lot of one-on-one time with Dexter. Debbie just wants to feel special too. Mmm there's nothing like old men for a honking expensive dinner first and some slow, patient lovin' after...

"Also, when has Dexter ever enjoy sex before? I thought he lacked the human emotion and what not and that he's always "faked" it. is it because of Lila too?"

it appears that dexter has been slowly developing/coming to terms with human emotions throughout this season.

So many ways this season could play out. I like what someone said, that Dexter is inching closer and closer to breaking his code. He is killing fewer people this season, but seems more sinister in the process.

So Lila's addiction is fire. And sometimes, barbecuing boyfriends in fire. Code or no code, sounds like a perfect candidate for plastic wrapping!

So, does anybody else think that Lila is a pyromaniac? She looked very euphoric while setting her art on fire. Also, she has already confessed to burning down somebody's home and killing him. Perhaps she is a serial arsonist.

(She has an obsession with candles as well.)

I'm waiting for a catfight between Rita and Lila. I always thought Jaime Murray was underused in one of my favorite british imports, the BBC/AMC show "Hustle," and now she is totally kicking ass! I just love her smug at the end (and "Pardon my tits" was classic!)
I agree that Dexter is getting too clever and cocky this season, a bit out of character, but maybe it's because of Lila's influence and the revelation that he's dad has been a lier? It's getting very destructive.
Also, when has Dexter ever enjoy sex before? I thought he lacked the human emotion and what not and that he's always "faked" it. is it because of Lila too?
And I know I'm be a minority here, but I actually like Lundy and Deb getting together. It's sort of like a sharp contrast to Dexter's romantic affair (compare to last season when Deb was involved with the crazy one.)
Finally, the final scene with the lightbulb was fantastic, can't wait for the next eppy.
