TV male eye candy (Jen's Three)

by Jen Creer, posted Nov 13th 2007 10:00AM
mick st. johnI can't remember when I have enjoyed a research project more. We have an opportunity to create our own lists of the hottest guys on TV today, and let me tell you: It was not easy. We originally had 30 men on our list (thirty-one if you count our top guy, but you'll have to click to Kristin's post to find out where to see who he is!), but we were asked to pare them down to ... three apiece?!

Here are my three. Well, I suppose you get a big clue as to one of them right here and now, but I couldn't resist putting up this photo. Yum! You will notice that my tastes don't run strictly to candy: I have someone who is not quite human; a self-admitted asshole; and an arrogant coward. Come to think about it, you could apply these descriptions to all three of my guys, but I love 'em anyway!

mickIf you like an otherworldly quality in your guy...

1) Alex O'Loughlin from CBS's Moonlight (Mick St. John)

I have to admit, I am a sucker for vampires, private investigators, and sexy Aussies (even one who is not using his accent on the show). Alex O'Loughlin is the hunky star of CBS's Moonlight, and the show's fans are smitten. They are rather rabid, almost as if they'd been bitten... Alex may be the most traditionally sexy guy on my list. He is pure eye candy, but he is also as intelligent and sensitive as you'd want a TV hero to be.

He can sniff out estrogen in a drop of blood at a crime scene, and he sleeps in a freezer. He can scale tall buildings in a single bound, but his heroine often has to save him from death. He's really a modern hero in that he is an anti-hero: He's strong, but not macho. He's hung up on the wife who made him a vampire, and the now-grown child he killed his wife to protect.

Mick St. John keeps one foot firmly in the realm of humans, as he struggles to hang on to his own humanity in the face of his bloodthirsty nature. It's a multi-layered internal battle, and Alex is a joy to watch every step along the way.

If narcissism, betrayal, and cowardice combined with a sexy intelligence and a hint of madness are more your bag...

James Callis2) James Callis from Sci Fi's Battlestar Galactica (Gaius Baltar)

Honestly, I might get voted off the island for this pick, but I can't help myself. James Callis (Gaius Baltar) is my favorite thing about Battlestar Galactica. There have been moments when I thought he may be thrown out of an airlock for his behavior, but I have vowed to stop watching if and when that happens. Gaius is a deeply flawed character, but I love his interactions with Six, and particularly in the first season, his weasily intelligence and arrogance. Can't say I love the long-haired bearded look, but James Callis has stolen my heart with his fearless portrayal. He (and my third guy) plays unlikeable fearlessly.

Callis may not be a beefcake or as tall as Six, but with his feline good looks, you have to admit, he is just sexy, sexy, sexy. He radiates intelligence, and that voice and that accent? I wouldn't kick him out of bed for eating crackers...

Finally, if you don't mind pill-popping misanthropes, this might be the guy for you...

house3) Hugh Laurie from FOX's House (Gregory House)

It has occurred to me that my taste in men could be viewed as highly questionable based on this list. But honestly, there is little that is sexier than intelligence. Does it warm the cockles of your heart to know that William Petersen (Gil Grissom) was on my list before I had to pare it down? Nobody can accuse Grissom of being arrogant or cold. Well. Never mind.

But honestly, Hugh Laurie? Are you kidding me? Is there any man on television today who is sexier? (Well, you'll get to our number one post after Kristin's post, and he might just give Hugh a run for his money, and he is a legitimate beefcake...) Hugh Laurie has it all: Scruffy good looks, intelligence, wit, a deadly sense of comic timing, and best of all: Curiosity. Not to mention that he does it all while hobbling on a cane and faking an American accent.

If House is the only thing you've seen Laurie do, you are missing out. Run to your nearest video store during the writers' strike and watch his work on A Bit of Fry and Laurie and Blackadder.

The man rides a motorcycle for crying out loud: Need I say more?

I agree, there is no man sexier than Hugh Laurie, I have never missed an episode of House because of him. Everything about him screams sex appeal. He is gorgeous, with those piercing blue eyes and that sense of humor. He is just sexy

Jen, I agree with you completely about James Callis! IMO he is currently the sexiest man on TV. Even if you won't hear people say that often - because he doesn't play a 'heroic' type of character. Not only is he incredibly handsome (those big intense eyes, cheekbones, hair...), but he has a unique charisma, charm, and is a brilliant actor. There are many good-looking guys on TV, but to me, to be really sexy, a man needs to be charismatic. So what if he's not a tall beefcake - so many of today's cinema biggest sex symbols aren't: Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, Gael Garcia Bernal... And I love James Callis's slim wiry body, he doesn't need to be ridiculously buff as so many guys today are trying to be.

I've been a big fan even before BSG, from his roles on British TV. I first saw him in the lead role in a 1998 adaptation of Ruth Rendell's novel "Going Wrong" (which was a part of the series called "Ruth Rendell Mysteries" - sadly, this programme is very hard to find, except on an expensive DVD box-set "Best of Ruth Rendell Mysteries"). His character was very different from Baltar, but it was also someone who couldn't be easily categorized as good or bad, and James was brilliant in his role, not to mention incredibly hot. While Baltar is a weasely, manipulative and often cowardly, this guy was obsessive, deluded and frighteningly intense, and strangely lovable despite being dangerous and almost psychotic. You also have to see him in a BBS mini-series "Sex, Chips and Rock'n'Roll", as a long-haired, laid-back, cool and funny bohemian drummer of a 60s pop band. He's also very intelligent, funny and charming in real life - but with a much nicer personality than Baltar.

Easiest choice ever: Alex O'Loughlin!!! The man is sinfully delicious and oozes sex-appeal and charm. He can slay millions of woman with just a look or a smile and cause mass fainting with his oh-so-sexy voice. Not to mention his killer abs, as seen in the dripping wet, open-shirt 'Fever' pic. Face it, there's not a single thing about him that isn't sexy, even his cute little nervous habits.

Um, I guess this make me one of the rabid fans :D

Oh my goodness! You are absolutely right, Alex O'Loughlin is gorgeous! He does such a fantastic job in the portrayal of Mick St John! It has definitely made the vampire genre more interesting!!! I think I am getting weak in the knees just looking at his photo...love the hair, the eyes, that grin...and love to see him wearing those long coats! Oh my! Oh my!!!

I cannot get enough of watching Moonlight! It is my favorite TV show!

Long Live Moonlight!!!

Alex O'Loughlin. This man just has IT. He is a terrific actor with a way of making a facial expression be all you need. He could have done silent movies...yes, he's THAT good. He's also gorgeous, sexy and has a cute Aussie/American hybrid accent. This man is my obsession and I like it that way. ;)

Mick St. John, as portrayed by Alex O'laughlin, is the best thing to hit tv in a long while. Rabid fans? That doesn't even begin to cover it. Obsessed is closer to the mark. Seriously obsessed.
