It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: The Gang Dances Their Asses Off (season finale)

Mac demonstrates his elbow dance move to Charlie.
(S03E15) "Your illiteracy has screwed us again Charlie!" - Mac

1:15 PM. On a Saturday. Philadelphia, PA. Last call at Paddy's bar for the season... and possibly forever. Why you ask? Because thanks to Charlie's pea-sized brain, a bum now owns Paddy's. Of course, Charlie isn't entirely to blame. Add in Frank's sedative brownies and Rickety Cricket beating in Dee's legs, and it becomes hard to say where the ultimate blame should rest. While this wasn't the best episode, the ending made for a good cliffhanger. In the past year, FX has rewarded Nip/Tuck, Rescue Me, and Damages with meaty renewals. Here's to hoping that It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is extended the same courtesy.

So Charlie signed the bar up to host a dance marathon and he put the bar up as the prize. Now maybe this is a really stupid question, but even if you're illiterate, how exactly do you mess up prize and pride?

So once that news got out, everyone showed up. Coffee Shop Girl, Rickety Cricket, and even some bum. Who wouldn't want a free bar? The bum that showed up is the one that won it all. Now supposedly he had an agreement with Frank to give the bar back if he won. He's a bum! Did we learn nothing from last week's episode? There is no way that guy is giving back the bar. Even if he doesn't keep it open, it's a warm place to sleep, chock full of free booze, and there's plenty of places for his bum friends to, um... relieve themselves.

OK, so back to this dance marathon. Great to see The Sklar Brothers as the DJs -- Squirrelly D and Fat Michael. Those two had a great run on the last season of Entourage and it was good to see them here presiding over the competition. Here's what I didn't get. It was a dance marathon... so why were there regular fifteen minute breaks and "dance offs" that halted the competition while everyone watched the two people in the middle? It didn't make sense. It was funny but killed the whole marathon idea.

Anyway, the dance offs were hilarious. I really thought Rickety Cricket was gonna kill everyone since he had those leg braces on. Of course, that's kind of against all logic. He has braces because the mob shot him in the leg. His legs are bad... hence, the braces. So naturally he should suck and he did. Charlie's moment of truth was the best though. First he made that quip about "the white hot cream of an eighth grade boy" and then he proceeded to dance to "Take My Breath Away." And he won!

Other thoughts...

  • I loved how Dennis kept dropping people to get them disqualified. That engaged couple, Coffee Shop Girl... hug and drop. Great plan.
  • Mac dancing was like a cinematic from a Mortal Kombat video game. It was like karate, yoga, and disco all combined.
  • Favorite scene? When Frank, the bum, and Rickety Cricket were frying the brownies on a steel drum in the back alley.
  • I want to learn the moves to The Rococo Bang. Seems easy enough - just make your partner do nothing but grope you and return the favor.
  • Anyone else notice how Rickety Cricket's legs made robot noises?
  • I loved when the DJs put on a slow song and told everyone to get "sextra close, Osmond close."

So what next? Well I see no reason why this show won't get renewed. I hope that the cliffhanger holds true and they don't own the bar anymore. At least for an episode or two. I know we saw it once this season already, but it'll be funny to see them all go out and try to get other jobs. Especially Frank. Everybody likes watching the cream rise to the top!

I thought it was a brilliant end to another great season, and a real salute to how they pair up in different combinations for every episode. It's been a long time since I've seen it, but were they making references to "They Shoot Horses, Don't They"?

I kinda forget how the Gang Sells Out ended, but did Charlie became the sole owner of the bar? Or at least majority owner? Otherwise, he can't really sign it away. And even if the bum goes back on the deal with Frank, I assume that a signatory's illiteracy is solid ground to get a contract tossed. But of course, they'd have to hire a lawyer to accomplish that, and I can't see these guys ever doing something so... logical and reasonable.

Ok I loved this episode. These guys really get you to have some kind of weird connection with everyone's demented brain. The dance off's were hysterical. Mac vs. Dennis allowed you to get just enough cringe when mac starts dancing around Dennis's crotch and before you knew it Bam! Mac was strapped to a 25 lb. Keg...awesome! Waitress chick and rickety cricket were funy as hell. Something about the waitress that is sexy yet creepy. Almost like Seinfeld but worse...something much worse.

I can't wait for more!

So funny, and great use of recurring characters. I like that they show how smart Sweet Dee is, and that she always is close to getting what she wants, but never does. I also liked the nice local touch of Q102 being a real Philly radio station.

I love this episode. Charlie: "I can handle my sedatives" was pricelles.

The best comedy on television, with Entourage in second place.

From Brazil!
