Dexter: Morning Comes

Dexter
(S02E08) I have mixed emotions about this episode. At first, when the episode ended, I was flipping-out excited. Holy crap, what a turn the season has taken! Then I remembered last season and how, when Dexter's brother (who we didn't know was his brother yet) was introduced as the prosthetics expert, I made an easy prediction that came true. I see that happening here again, and in some ways I'm hoping it's a huge red herring.

Don't get me wrong -- last season was amazing, even though I knew Dexter's brother was going to be the killer. However, I didn't feel like they threw things in our face like they did tonight. When Doakes said to La Guerta, "my father was a butcher," I could already see the flashback scene in the season finale, with Doakes being suspected as the Bay Harbor Butcher and la Guerta remembering that "pivotal" scene in this episode. "OhMyGod! He said his father was a butcher! It all makes sense now!" Please please tell me it won't play out that way.

I can also see that Doakes, now having discovered Dexter's slides (this was the part that made me yell "holy shite!" when it played out on-screen), he will likely be found with those slides by the finale, which will further (or initially) incriminate Doakes as the Butcher. Ironically, I don't think Dexter thought his plan for getting Doakes out of his hair would have worked out so nicely for him.

Now, if Doakes does go down for the Bay Harbor Butcherings, I wonder how next season would play out. If Doakes dies in this season, then the slate is basically wiped clean for Dex next season. If Doakes goes to jail, I imagine a good chunk of the next season could hover around Doakes trying to find a way to prove Dexter is the killer. This is a guy who has it out for Dexter, so if he's rotting in jail because of something he clearly knows he didn't do (and knows who did do), he'll make it his mission to take Dexter down. I seriously think it makes a hell of a lot more sense that Doakes will die before the season's out, otherwise we're talking lengthy court cases that will certainly start leading away from Doakes and toward Dexter -- that couldn't play out all that well for him.

I think a red herring we're seeing in this episode is likely Lundy's interrogation of Dexter and how it looked as though he suspects Dexter as being involved in the murders. I think Lundy does suspect Dexter, though not of performing the murders. I think Lundy thinks Dexter knows Doakes is the killer and is hiding the evidence for fear of what Doakes will do to him. In the end I'm betting that's how it will play out.

Now let's talk about Lila and Rita. Lila's not out of the picture -- not by a long shot. I'm betting she calls Dexter's bluff and does something completely heinous to Dexter, Rita or Rita's family that causes Dexter to, er, relieve his urges. As for Rita, I feel so much for her poor kids. To have them shuffle around from one father figure to the next is a heartbreaking thing to see. If Rita's not meant to get back with Dexter, I'm not yet sure why we'll see much more of her and her family in this or next season.

One big question I have is: what about the crime scene Dexter just left in that shack in the woods? Is it conceivable that someone might happen upon it before Dexter's able to come back to finish cleaning it up? Maybe Dexter will know Doakes's position in Lundy's eyes and will set the scene up to look like Doakes did it? Man, that would be something else.

Oh, and I'm not sure what more there is to say about Deb and Lundy. We all saw it coming, right? Right?

Quote of the episode:

Dexter: "A secret cabin in the middle of the Everglades. What more can a rededicated serial killer ask for?"

Doakes' "butcher" comment is
a red herring183 (29.5%)
an overly-obvious plot driver339 (54.6%)
Something I have no idea why is significant at all99 (15.9%)

....& they never said anything about the missing file on who signed the car out to go kill the guy. How is that going to surface?

As crazy as this may seem, wouldnt it be nuts if Lundy was actually the cop that Dexters mom had the affair with that got her killed?? Wonder how Dexters sis would handle that. I think Doakes going down as the killer is too obvious. & what was the signifigance of Dexter noticing Lila had her lightbulb changed outside her door?

lila has some major durt on dexter which at this point in the BHB investigation can really turn the heat up on dex, plus she's not above blackmailing him to keep him or even more feasible to keep rita from having him back. i think somehow deb is going to catch lila in the act, she will probably relapse on meth and do something crazy in adrug induced state and deb is going to kill her, that would poetically even the scales from last season. (dex saving deb from boyfriend). yes it looks like doakes might be a fall guy, plus we aren't mean to like doakes, remember last year he killed a guy unnecessarily, dex knows and that a capital offense to dexter. but he might have to do something more to make dexter's hit list. i like the idea of lundy suspecting dex has been covering for doakes. and i can see his closeness to deb becoming problematic for dex and the miami pd. this season was really starting to get to me, i didn't like lila, i thought the story had lost some of it's fluidity, i started to miss the serial killer dexter, but with so many changes being made in the last few moments of episode eight it really redeemed itself.

Hey,

I just got through all the dexter episodes in 3 days. One of the best tv-series I've seen, ever.

Something that stuck out in my mind was that Dexter told Doakes that he was always one step ahead and will always be.

So if we go by that information he knew Doakes was going to come searching in Dexter's apartment, therefore he left his slides in plain sight where Doakes would find them.

Also a question for you Dexter dudes who've read the books. Should I buy books 1 and 2 (3 seems bad) when I've seen this far in the tv-series? I don't really want to read what I've seen if you know what I mean.

I am going to order the Dexter books but don't know which ones I should get! Help :)

1. Just a thought, but could Lundy be using Deb to get to Dexter? Sort of a twist on last season's ITK relationship with Deb. Why would he risk an unprofessional relationship and possibly harm the investigation? Would it be too ironic for her to be used again? She should stick with the gym buddy!

2. Is Dexter's adopted father, Harry Morgan, really his biological father? Perhaps that's why Harry pikced up Dexter and not the brother/ITK. I believe the story says Harry had a relationship with Dexter's mother and Dexter was only 3 or 4 at the time.

3. The Lila-Dexter relationship is too hot to messing up! This is the best developement in the whole series! My vote is for Lila to stay and Rita to go. Why do the writers go for the easy out and make Lila a raging, psycho harpy who can never be a permanent character. She is a much more interesting character and actress than Rita!! I see from the previews that she's going to 'switch' and take his friends (Ariel, Masuka). She and Doakes are really squeezing Dex from both ends.

1 - No Doakes fingerprints on slides - he wore gloves.
2 - Dex Stole the car from evidence locker, - All he had to do was use a key from someone who had one - from sounds of it, many. Why do people think it was allowed to take it without signing for it. This is not a weak plot part.

Doakes is best character after Dex - but like ITK, will have to be gone by season's end. With the latest discovery, there is no other option if season 3 is to happen - Doakes dies, but I doubt by Dexter. Likely other cops chasing him end up shooting him, or maybe even Lila does it to help Dex out to curry his favor? He'll be framed, but I think Lundy will have doubts anyway.

Just saw the episode. Heart was pumping so hard at the end, we can all agree on that.

McDuffee - This review was wank. You spent 3/4 of it talking supposition about Doakes and the "what ifs" rather than review what actually happened in this episode, which to be fair were pretty darn awesome compared to the last couple of weeks.

Lundy gave Dex a perfect "out" as to why he does what he does. "To save lives"...
