David Hasselhoff may appear in Knight Rider sequel series

by Jason Hughes, posted Nov 20th 2007 4:22PM

Reuters Canada is reporting that David Hasselhoff is in talks to reprise his role as the titular character Michael Knight in the updating of the classic series Knight Rider. In the new telefilm / back-door-pilot, Justin Bruening (All My Children) has already been cast as Mike Tracer, the estranged son of Hasselhoff's Knight, who never knew his father.

Just added is fellow soap-star Deanna Russo of The Young and the Restless. She'll play Tracer's former girlfriend Sarah Kamen. In the film, she sets out with KITT (that's the talking car) to find her father, recruiting Tracer along the way. Does she know he's the son of Michael Knight? Does Kitt? Maybe KITT is vampiric now and needs Knight blood to survive; Hasselhoff will be trapped in the engine block, barely alive. "FEED ME, MICHAEL!"

The real question is if this will incorporate 1991's Knight Rider 2000 into continuity? That was another back-door pilot from which a series never materialized. How about the syndicated Team Knight Rider? That one made it 22 episodes in the latter 90s. It's like the concept that never dies! What is it about talking cars?

Okay, I admit I put a British voice on my GPS system and used it to drive around my neighborhood just to hear her talk to me. She told me what to do and where to go, just like my wife, only she sounded way sexier! Speaking of which, how many of KITT's amazing features come standard on cars these days now, anyway? Is he even state of the art anymore?

KITT: "Michael, I know a shortcut--"

Michael: "Yeah, I've already Googled it here on-screen. Thanks, though, buddy."

KITT: "Michael, before you get out you should know the temperature has dropped twenty degrees outside."

Michael: "I know, it says so right here by the rear-view mirror."

KITT: "Michael, my internal diagnostics are reporting a temperature fluctuation in--"

On*Star Technician: "This is On*Star, we're showing a temperature fluctuation in--"

KITT: "Now that's just rude."

On*Star Technician: "Excuse me?"

KITT: To interrupt someone while they're talking. That's incredibly rude."

On*Star Technician: "Are you the driver? Is everything--"

KITT: "Well, I should hardly--"

Michael: "While you two work this out, I'm gonna get out here and kick some ass. Did you remember to polish your hood for when I need to come sliding across it after I piss these guys off, KITT? I'm still chafed from last time."

KITT: (sigh) "Yes, Michael."

I'd be down for this thing, as long as they ignore the add-ons to continuity that they talked about in the article, and just focused on the original series' history. You never know, if done right, it could be pretty interesting and fun to go back to the original feeling you got when watching the original Knight Rider.

Are they really this hard up for ideas that they have to ruin our 80's shows by bringing them back? Let sleeping dogs lie, please for the love of god!

(She also played a very small role in a recent How I Met Your Mother episode!)

Yeah now it sounds more like a spin-off/sequel than a remake.

You also make the point of how KITT is outdated, and although that's true, you still can't get TurboBoost action in cars of today. Indestructibility? Or artificial intelligence with sarcasm to boot.

Finally, Deanna Russo? Okay so I watch plenty of good television. Battlestar, The Office, Friday Night Lights.. what I mean to say dear commentators is, please respect me as I say that I also watch The Young and the Restless from time to time. My mom watched it to learn colloquial English and so I kind of grew up on it. So anyway Russo was a very beautiful addition to the cast. I hope if this show doesn't work out that she's able to keep that job. Or if this works out, then I get to see her in both (because I grew up on Knight Rider as well!).

This is sort of off topic but shouldn't this be referred to as a sequel rather than a remake of the original series?
