Weeds: Go (season finale)

by Erin Martell, posted Nov 20th 2007 3:23PM

Mary-Louise Parker and Alexander Gould(S03E15) Surprise, surprise! For once, a season of Weeds ended with Nancy taking control of her life instead of being at the mercy of outside circumstances. The first two season finales provided over-the-top cliffhangers, but Season Three ended with what appeared to be a fresh start for Nancy and the Botwin family.

Doug's songs were the perfect way to frame some of the ridiculous behavior that was on display at the evacuation center. His exchange with the leader of the prayer circle (the one speaking in tongues) was priceless. How about that "Just Like the Superdome" song? I can't believe that the writers went there, but I could not stop laughing after I heard the lyrics.

I'm a little bummed that Nancy and Conrad gave up on their relationship so quickly. Apparently an ignorance of Grateful Dead songs and poor culinary skills are deal-breakers for them. It's unfortunate that they couldn't stay together, but at least they were honest and realistic about it. Nancy was about to lose everything, and she wasn't going to stick around just to date Conrad. The former Aguatecture owners, on the other hand, will probably go back to work on a new crop. If Heylia keeps to her word, Conrad will be growing independently and supplying Heylia's club. Perhaps Celia can help her run it--she was still keen to be part of the gang.

On the other hand, Celia might not be the best business partner. She gave Nancy up to Roy Till almost instantly. I can't believe that she didn't try to pin everything on Sullivan--it was the perfect opportunity for revenge! Now Sullivan's off to Colorado Springs, and Nancy will have some questions to answer next season. It seemed like nearly half the episode's cast made it to the grow house during the fire. Aside from the Police and Fire Departments, Tara and the Absolute Truth folks stormed into the burning Majestic house. Good for Silas for finally getting over the slightly burned, cross-obsessed Tara! It's about time that boy got some sense. On a side note, I loved the moment when the policemen called themselves the Agrestic police and had to quickly correct the mistake.

Thanks to Judah, Nancy and Shane had another heart-to-heart talk. They're not 100% healthy yet--Nancy didn't even know that Shane had pet turtles...for an entire year. At least Shane cut Nancy a break and compromised on the Pittsburgh fantasy. Look out, Tampa! The expression on Shane's face when the news reporter mentioned that the charter school was being consumed by the fire was adorably wicked. His days of communicating with the dead are probably over as well. Isabel put Shane in his place after about a minute. Those two have the most mature, direct conversations of anyone on the show (even the adults). If the Botwins move, I hope Shane and Isabel stay in touch.

By burning down her house, Nancy finally did something that made sense to me. She had a couple of easy alternatives--working for Guillermo or waiting out the fire--but chose to determine her own fate. I'm glad that she broke the pattern of merely reacting to whatever problems arose in her life. Whenever Nancy did anything over the last few seasons, it was because she felt she had to. Destroying her "prefab sh*tbox" and the life that it represented was her first major decision. She obviously wants a new life, but what will that life be?

Another important question: Where will Nancy start her new life? I'm guessing that the Botwins won't get as far as Tampa, but will they settle down in another generic suburb? Will Nancy's legal troubles and personal relationships lead her back to Majestic? I hope the writers keep Nancy in the Majestic loop. I'd miss Doug, Celia, and company if Nancy moved.

That said, this episode was a cool way to say goodbye to the familiar faces and places in Majestic. Some of the old Agrestic residents made an appearance in this episode. Pam Gruber was on hand with her brilliant strategy to save her belongings by submerging them in the pool. The naked Segway guy provided Nancy with an unusual getaway vehicle after torching her house. We even got to watch the various sites from the credits burn down. The lap dog with a burning tail was the funniest part of the montage. I wonder if this means we'll get a new opening sequence next season?

The creative ending more than made up for some of the elements that I didn't love about this season. U-Turn who? Count me in for Season Four. So, for now, goodbye to Majestic! Goodbye to the SUVs, the identical joggers, and It's a Grind Coffeehouse!

My favorite lines of the finale:

  • "Where there's smoke, there's smoke." --Andy
  • "They're making fondue at cot fourteen." --Nancy
  • "They say that arson is a sexual crime. Couldn't you have just rubbed one out?" --Andy
  • "Fine. If we regroup the group, you'll be in the group." --Nancy
  • "I think they shot Peckers of the Caribbean here." --the fireman, on seeing the grow house
  • "She of the magical house-earning p**sy." --Roy Till, on Celia
  • Guillermo: "It's the circle of life." Nancy: "Hakuna matata."

See you in 2008!

Does everybody else think this needs to be an hour long show? I think that's the biggest problem... It's just too hard to squeeze everything into 30 mins.

I hope things pick up in Season 4. I've been hooked on Weeds (no pun intended) since the beginning, but the last season was disappointing. Again, hour long episodes would help with both the plot lines and character development...

Season 3 wandered around telling stories like a half-drunk guest, no real begining then trailing off at the end to no conclusion.

Season 1 used weed to peel back the pretentious layers of suburbia to expose the twisted funny right in Nancy's backyard.

1.Doug's snotty son caught rolling around with the gay guy topped by Nancy exploiting the situation to negotiate her terms.

2. The All-American soccer practice complete with soccer moms being snide and Nancy dealing in the parking lot.

3. The "Fakery" could have worked with the suburbia crowd buying weed in the front while the thugs delivered in the rear.

I hope that the writers come up with a Season 4 that is actually funny and tight.

Weeds will be back, a fourht season has been ordered by Showtime to go into production in April (pending the WGA strike of course) and air in the summer:

I enjoyed the season, especially how Nancy seemed to toughen up and commit to what she was doing. Gangster means never having to say your sorry, so if there were a few weak areas they shouldn't apologize...

What I disliked about this season:
-Dean's injury didn't add much to the story
-The biker plotline seemed a bit forced, could've done without it
-I think they jumped the gun by hooking up Nancy and Conrad this season, they should've milked the tension while Nancy continued to bang every thug (or sleazy salesman) within a 25 mile radius
-I really could have done without the entire plotline involving Peter's ex-wife, especially since they didn't do anywhere with it

What I liked about this season:
-Classic Doug, fighting Sully, Celia and the Majestic City council
-Nancy and U-Turn, classic scenes too bad they killed him off so quickly
-Classic Celia, bitchy & insane yet amazingly vulnerable in the scenes with Sullivan (Elizabeth Perkins is outstanding in that role)
-Getting to see a little more of Andy and the boys especially with Silas now in the family business.

I eagerly await the next season, and what the aftermath of the fire has in store for the vapid residents of Majestic.

Are we positive there is going to be a next season? It seemed to me that the finale was a really good way to end the show. I hope there is a season 4 but i agree that if they dont have doug and the rest in the show it wont be quite as awesome. Kevin Nealon is one of the best on the show.

Everbody keeps saying that Celia dropped a dime on Nancy, but I didn't hear her say Nancy was a dealer, she just said her name.

theotherone--The song in the final scene is "Keepsake" by State Radio. I enjoyed it, too.

Can anyone help me out? I'm trying to find a song they used in the season finale. It's the one where Nancy is pooring gas all over the house. There's a short break after this song and then it goes into Little Boxes. If anyone knows the artist or the title of the other song, please pass is on.

By the way, Heylia had a great line there too. I can't quote it exactly but she says something about Nancy being a "C*ck Charming" something. She's so funny, but don't give away her cornbread recipe.

This was a poorly scripted season, and lacked so many of the little things that made Weeds a clever and funny show. In the last two seasons, there was a main plot that kept the story going until the finale. This season was composed of different stories that went nowhere, and guest stars that didn't have much to offer.

So many things were annoying and unnecessary:

- Matthew Modine was not needed this season. He can be a great actor but the writing left him looking shallow and unused. And what the hell was that Agrestic, Majestic and Christian subdivision bs about? Why introduce him if he didn't bring anything of substance to the show?

- Elizabeth Perkins was annoying and misguided. Her ridiculous strutting whenever she was talking to someone about weed looked ridiculous.

- The writers didn't use Heylia and Conrad as much as they should have. H & C provide so many laughs, yet they were ignored this season. One of the many reasons why I didn't laugh at all.

- Another reason why I couldn't laugh this season: Andy (Nancy's brother-in-law) was also missing in action. What was all that crap about sending him to the Army? Then he's a caterer? This character had some of the best lines in previous seasons, and was absent for most of this one.

- Nancy was all over the place. Her acting was as solid as that lame table-dance that she stumbled through on the Hispanic pool table.

Argh! I waited so long for this season, and it stank from the first episode. Good riddance to a lousy season!

If this spells the end of the Majestic crew, I'm a bit upset at the ending. It feels as if they're changing just for the sake of change and it won't work if Nancy is unwittingly hiding from the DEA and starting anew in another cookie cutter neighborhood.
