Nip/Tuck: Dawn Budge II

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Nov 21st 2007 1:16AM

Rosie O'Donnell as Dawn Budge in Nip/Tuck.
(S05E04) "I was attacked by a giant wedge-tailed eagle in Calgary." - Dawn

The return of the best guest star Nip/Tuck has ever had! Say what you will about Rosie O'Donnell (I couldn't stand her on The View), but when she steps into the shoes of Dawn Budge, it's gold. She was one of the highlights of last season (not to mention Christian's first paying "escort" customer) and her trip to Los Angeles easily made this episode an instant Nip/Tuck classic. From her hang-glider scene when the eagle attacked her to the face she made when the "ass bandit" had his way with her, she stole every scene she was in.

It's funny too, because from the first second we saw her with that mangled lip, I immediately thought "she needs to meet Freddy Prune!" And that's just what happened. For a brief moment, I actually thought she was dead when the stage light on the set of Hearts and Scalpels fell on her. However, I'm glad the writers chose to keep her around because O'Donnell and Platt are perfect together. Even though Christian tried to warn Dawn about Freddy's blatantly obvious sexual preferences, I hope Dawn is back for at least another episode so she can figure out that she's just Freddy's "beard." Did you see the face he made when the "ass bandit" poked him? Pure delight.

Now I mentioned earlier that Dawn was Christian's first customer so to speak, and if you recall, she thought sex with Christian was terrible. Well it can't be all that bad, because his new male escort service is taking off. Too bad all the loonies are calling him. A women who wants to be chilled to near death via ice and tranquilizers and then literally f*cked back to life? Um... how 'bout no. Even for Christian, I was surprised that he agreed to that one. Fortunately, I loved the pay-off when he saved the nut-job lady a second time because he prayed. The re-examination of his relationship with God and his childhood abuse is something that hasn't been discussed in a while, but I hope this nun sticks around. I'd love to see Christian explore this side of himself a bit more.

Then there's Sean. Poor Sean. First off, Dylan Walsh has never really wowed me as an actor. He's always been tolerable in this show simply because the role of Sean is so good. Well, Walsh finally sold me in this episode. He was spectacular. That one scene where he "fought" with his weaker half was excellent. The big question is, which half will win? I feel like we're being pushed towards Eden. Clearly Kate has weight and eating issues and Sean seems to be over-compensating by asking her to marry him. He has to sleep with Eden though. At this point, it's the only logical payoff. Notice how Sean's weaker half also seemed to be the more assertive half though? You can be weak and still know what you want.

Speaking of Eden... wow. Hearing her talk is great! And I say that not because I'm some pervert, but because I just can't wait to hear what filthy thing she's going to say next. No other character (except maybe Kimber in her porn days) has pushed the envelope this far. She makes for a great character though. But hey -- she has a conscience. She'll teach Annie how to induce vomiting, but cocaine is off-limits. That's what big sisters are for!

Speaking of Annie, what's the deal with her officially going to school in LA now? Or not, since she got kicked out for fooling around with a boy. Regardless, did Julia actually move out west? I know a lot of people have been ticked that Connor seems to have been forgotten about it. I was willing to forgive his absence when Julia was supposed to be "visiting," but it seems like she's there for good now. If I recall correctly, I think he's supposed to be at Erica's. You'd think Julia would have gone and gotten him by now though. I wonder if that's Olivia's doing? She seems awfully fake and she's very manipulative. Also manipulative? Matt and Kimber. Where were they in this episode? I want to know how the hell they became meth addicts.

Overall, a great episode. Loved every minute of it. Random thought to close: are we ever going to see characters like Ava, Quentin, or Kit again? What about Michelle? What do you think?

Which Nip/Tuck alumnus would you like to see again?
Ava Moore134 (36.5%)
Quentin Costa70 (19.1%)
Gina Russo23 (6.3%)
Kit McGraw34 (9.3%)
Michelle Landau31 (8.4%)
Marlowe Sawyer8 (2.2%)

Johnathin -
I apologize, i wasn't clear. I mean that the doctors and everyone else believes he is dead when he is (obviously) alive. I should have made that clear instead of just saying that he was 'supposed to be dead'

I love Nip/Tuck, but they don't always care about the kids much. In previous seasons, they'd forget about Annie for episodes at a time, only bringing her up when they needed her. I'm sure they're doing the same with Conor. And for that matter, I'm sure Annie will disappear again soon too.

Hey Fans -
I am dying to know what Classical Music Piece was playing throughout the "Dawn Budge II" episode during the scenes with Christian and the Ice Queen? It was so haunting and beautiful at the same time. Thanks for any info - Gabriela

Kristopher --

Quentin is not dead. At the end of season three, we saw him sipping fancy umbrella drinks with Kit at some swanky hotel/resort.

I honestly PRAY that Ava will show up. She was the best 'villian'/antagonist on the show and she is the only one i could see coming back.

Gina - i think they said something about her not returning because her sub-plot with Wilbur had ended.

Quentin/Kit - Highly unlikely since:
A.) The mystery of the Carver was one of the big points of the third season, now we know who it is.
B.) Quentin is supposed to be dead
C.) I GUESS Kit could be a possiblity but in the end of 3rd they found out she was really related to Quentin so i don't see how that could pan out well.

Michelle - A LOT of viewers hated her last season ( i didn't) and the woman who plays Michelle (name totally passes me now) was SUPPOSED to be signed on for Season 5 but after the fans reaction her contract got cancelled or whatever and now it is a definite she wont be back.

Marlowe - I guess he could come back, but meh, i don't really want him to. He was more important to the Conor Storyline and he (Conor) has seemingly disappeared. Maybe the writers are regretting the future episode and are now pretending he doesnt exist?

Merrill - I think he is in jail because he tried to kill Escobar...

Grace - Nooooo! That b*tch is done. I mean, they just wrote her character off without an explanation doubt she'd be back.

In the end, Ava is the last remaining attender that could make sense (also an exec. rumoured her return before the the 5th season premeire aired, here's hoping!)

But for Villains/Antagonists this season we got like: the dominatrix (who i hope returns i liked her character, and the actress), Eden and now this Ass guy.... Hmmm.... and possibly Ava.... PLEASE OH PLEASE! I loved Ava.

Oh, and i love Dawn Budge too.

My understanding was the school Annie transferred to was a boarding school. Although it does seem like Julia has been out in CA a long time. I also can't believe Julia doesn't take Sean's claims more seriously - she was studying to be a doctor so you'd think she'd be smarter. Or at least as a mother she'd give those claims a little more weight.

Didn't Sean have a "talk" with himself last season when he went on that multi-episode bender? Maybe I'm thinking he did as his weaker self in this episode looked a little like he did towards the end of that bender.

And I'm thinking this is how they're going to bring in the dominatrix again. With Sean's weaker self looking to castrate himself it's only a matter of time before he gives her a call. Didn't she give him her card?

About the only interesting aspect of the Eden story line hasn't even happened yet - her squaring off against Christian. He'll stand up against her and likely scare the bejesus out of her while he's at it. And have fun with it at the same time.

Still plenty of episodes left, and while I'm so far lukewarm about this season, I'll keep watching. It's much better than many other shows on at the same time.

Oh, and does anyone know when 'The Riches' will start up again? I really enjoyed it and the first season ended with some great possibilities for season two.

The Ass Bandit thing is really weird.

Sometimes Nip/Tuck is REALLY over-the-top.

Maybe we will find out that Dr Quentin Costa is 'behind' this.

I am so not interested in the whole Eden part of Nip/Tuck. The whole young sexpot, manipulator thing is so over played it isn't even funny or interesting anymore. I can't believe that Julia is that naive about her daughter. She goes from normal to hanky panky city after being at a new school in only a few days or couple of weeks. That is just lame. So Annie is turning into a slut and eating disorder poster girl, the oldest kid is a meth user, and next Connor will join the day care jihad and hold his school hostage. I always disliked what the doctor's kids in the show brought to the season.

Other than that, loving the season so far. Christian going born again Christian - ha! I don't think so. All the times when he questioned himself as a person are short lived and he goes back to his old ways. Rosie as Dawn Budge was awesome as usual. Though, I too, didn't like her on the View either.

Rosie "stole the scene" from the Ass Bandit? From whom? The Ass Bandit?

I don't like Rosie or Dawn Budge, but I did like the effect she had on Freddy. For the first time this season, he seemed like a perfect fit in the cast.

I'm enjoying this season, but it does seem to be going in a lot of different directions.
