Last call for Carson Daly repeats

by Jason Hughes, posted Nov 27th 2007 1:03PM

Last Call With Carson DalyEnding the late night rerun flood, Yahoo! reports that Last Call With Carson Daly will start taping new episodes this week, which should be ready for air next week. With his compatriots still in reruns, Daly will have the run of the late night landscape. Maybe for his first new episode his guest roster can include Jay Leno, David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Jimmy Kimmel, Craig Ferguson, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert.

They could take turns doing unscripted monologues with the audience voting for the host who sucks the most. Each segment a new host gets voted off the show. I predict Leno goes first. I think he'll stand there, head bobbing and giggling for a few minutes before he just squawks in panic, looks around futilely for Kevin Eubanks and runs off the stage. Letterman might just do the same thing but still manage to make it funny.

Who could handle the pressure best? I'd bet Craig Ferguson and Jon Stewart will do okay. Daly himself is friendly enough off the cuff, but is he funny? This could be the greatest reality show in the history of reality shows and Last Call gets to host. In fact, why not just call it Last Call ... because it's your last call on the show if you blow it! I bet Ryan Seacrest would host! Man, I have got to get me some people so I can have my people call his people and make this thing happen!

"Darling, baby, Ryan have I got the gig of a lifetime for you ... Rockin' Eve Schmockin' Eve, baby come on! You ain't heard this dream gig yet! See we're gonna get all the late night talk show hosts together in the same ... uh-huh ... oh you are huh? ... Dunkleman? What the hell's a Dunkleman?"

I think that a big reason Carson is crossing is to make the news - before today I didn't even know he has a show!

It saddens me to think writing is involved in Last Call With Carson Daly. That show is horrible and only made worse by Carson being Carson.

I think Carson Daly is looking out for Carson Daly. I'm betting his job was threatened since he is not a member of the WGA, and he would rather cross a picket line than stand in an unemployment line. Saying he's doing it for his crew is (in my opinion) an attempt to make himself look better. The writers are part of the staff too, and if he really cared about the staff he wouldn't be asking people to write jokes for him and call them in to "Carson's Joke Hotline." He'd have the courtesy to wing it or at least write his own jokes.

That crew is IATSE. They've also got negotiations coming up. They get residuals that make up all of their benefits like health care and pension plans. Meanwhile, the deal the writers get will serve as the basis for all the other contracts served. So anything that weakens the writers cause weakens negotiations for the DGA, SAG, IATSE and all the other Hollywood unions. Those jobs will be just as available once the strike is over as they are now. And again, the growing consensus is that this thing could be just about over. Why should the WGA take all the financial hit to fight for the basic negotiating rights of every union in Hollywood?

I support the writers wholeheartedly, but I think it's great that he's stepping in to do a show. Why next week? Because NBC said they'd stop paying their late night employees at the end of this week, and as unfunny as Carson Daly is (and oh, how he is unfunny), he's clearly a guy that's looking out for the rest of his staff.

I thought Ellen working was admirable and I think Daly working is also admirable -- the dozens of crew members on the show have bills to pay and Christmas coming up. Besides, both shows will be of lesser quality without the writers (is that possibly with Last Call? :P) and so it won't be like the public will think, "Who needs these writers?" They'll more likely be thinking, "Give the writers whatever they want! Carson Daly is even worse without them!"

You know, that's a good point. He's a scab, but a scab with a heart for his working crew.

What an idiot. Why would he cross a Guild picket line the very week people are saying the strike's end could be in sight, only to expose just how unfunny and untalented he is without the safety net of a writing staff to make him appear slightly less unfunny and untalented? Now he's just a scab, and when that first episode airs Monday he'll be a scab exposed even further for his hackery.

I ask the following with all sincerity..."Of what top level NBC executive does Carson Daly have compromising photos??"

The emergency test signal has more charisma than this guy!!

I don't think they need to fire the writers, I think they just need to cancel the show completely.

Maybe carson figures this is the only way he can get a footing in the ratings... by putting a big old knife in the back of the writer's union and everyone else trying to get paid fairly for their work and contribution.
