Thank God Dancing with the Stars is finally over

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 28th 2007 3:59PM

Marie OsmondReaders, our long national nightmare is over.

Can the nation please now get back to talking about something else? This was a show where celebrities danced (not even for charity or money) and it consumed the media for weeks. Who would have thought that the most important celebrity on ABC in 2007 would be Marie Osmond? (I can't wait until Bobby Sherman captures the nation's heart on next season's House Painting with the Stars.)

Not only was the show the talk of every single gossip show, every single night of the week (and usually the top story - Marie faints! California fires! Is the show rigged?!), it also seemed to be the topic of at least one Larry King Live per week. MSNBC has been talking about the finale today, and it's one of the "top stories" on my news feed. Not just entertainment, but all stories.

At least the singers on American Idol are amateurs who actually get a recording deal out of the show. What exactly was the fascination with celebrities dancing? So Helio Castroneves wins the title, and ... now what happens?

And I say this as someone who writes for a TV site and is really interested in all things pop culture. I get the obsession with Lost and Heroes, I understand the devotion to Idol, and I even get the teeny-bopper interest with Hannah Montana. But the appeal of this show - at least to the level that it obtained - really alludes me.

Maybe it's because I really hate to dance myself.

for those who hates DWTS, use the remote control. this is the problem about America, if a movie on the tube does not contain any filth, violence, etc, it doesn't sell. we love & adore britneyspears, lindsay lohan, paris hilton, etc and we made them a model for our young ones. now we all wonder why America is plummeting down to the dog mouths uncontrollably.

however, to the producers of DWTS, can you please put a more interesting characters in your show? i want to see michelle kwan as one of the stars. hey ABC, please make the next session worth watching for me by putting MK.

thanks.

Screw you Bob! Dancing of the stars grabs the media attention because it is rightfully the number one show week in and week out. If you don't like the show, why do you have to continually bash it?

Only women and homosexual men watch and like Dancing with the Retards. Which one are you?

I think it is funny all the griping about Marie Osmond but I really don't understand the hostility. It seems that we just don't like "nice" anymore. I was pulling for Marie because I think she was a perfect example of what the show is about. She was not a dancer and worked very hard and certainly improved throughout the show and looked good doing it at the ripe old age of 48. As for Donnie and Marie causing anyone to "puke" (kind of a sickening word), there is a lot on television these days to make you sick but Donnie and Marie and DWTS certainly aren't it. The only objection I have to the show is the very skimpy costumes worn by some of the women and the vulgarity of some of the dance routines. But it is, after all, just entertainment and if you don't like it, don't watch it.

This is the culture that TV created and the public endorses.

Thinks about it:
DWTS (almost nude hotties and over the hill performers)
Big Brother (live on air brothel)
Great Race (around the world in XX days)
Survivor (adult Boy/Girl Scouts who lie and cheat)
Hell's Kitchen (cook that "effin" meal)

I enjoy the British version, but it does get more coverage than it really needs. Also, the British version is for charity - for every phone vote, some money goes to Children in Need.

As a former dancer, I suppose that I'm biased but I do enjoy this show and the fact that it's getting people in America interested in dance makes me very happy.

There's also the fact that it's more of a variety show than a competition, full of silly jokes, girls in skimpy costumes and skits. Families can watch it together and there's also something refreshingly earnest and sweet about it that's sorely lacking in popular entertainment today.

All the blather over the dancing show will quickly turn into blather about the singing show when "American Idol" returns. I have no interest in either. I can only hope that the strike ends soon, or the "Idol" talk will somehow be even MORE widespread than it already is every year.

Now if only this website would quit reporting on every episode in minute detail...

I agree, the dancing would be fine if there were any real "stars" on the show and if it had meaning. Give the winner $5000,000 for some needy kids or something.

The only good thing is Boston Legal's numbers went up. :)
