Dexter to come to CBS?

by Jason Hughes, posted Dec 4th 2007 3:41PM

DexterCBS President/CEO Les Moonves is hopeful about the strike talks, as reported in this TV Week article, but also prepared should they continue to stall. He's tapped sister network Showtime, for additional programming. That's right, kids, everybody's favorite serial killer Dexter just might be showing up on free TV, with some creative edits. Moonves feels that Dexter, specifically, would fit well with the network's popular crime procedurals. On that, I think he's right.

My vote is for Penn & Teller: Bullshit!, Brotherhood and Californication to hit next. Considering the low numbers original programming tends to get on Showtime, I think this idea could be really good for both Showtime and CBS. As long as the series can be edited effectively, it could actually entice viewers to fork over the money for the pay channel. Maybe we could convince someone to air Deadwood on broadcast television next. Of course, they'd have to beep out all the curse words ... which would be pretty much everything. Maybe they could just run audio from old episodes of Teletubbies. Swearengen grabs a whore and says "Biiiiig Huuuuug!"

Dexter, Californication, and similar shows on basic network television would not be worth .02 cents to me. In the US, these stations are significantly - and often, ridiculously censored. These shows are not suited to be tame, one reason for which they draw a good percentage of their viewers.

Although I am significantly more opposed to Californication on basic television, Dexter, without the murder, is just not "Dexter". Dexter may be easier to edit, but in any such case, I am opposed to these shows turning into the rest of the sub-par series' that Sopranos and Sex In The City have become. In my opinion, those who disagree may buy or rent the season DVD's to experience the full effect.

Showtime, to me, is reaching new heights in standards and they have my count in ratings/viewers. If no one gives these things time to blossom on their own network, youre going to lose the original/cult viewers and the consistent ratings that keep these shows on the air.

Dexter is the best show on all of TV. No questions asked.

What a stupid idea, totally water down the series which for a series like this takes half the juice out of it.

Dexter is breaking Showtime viewer ship ratings literally week after week (that's a fact check it yourself), why would they want to water it down and spread it all over the place- that would be a death sentence.

They better not impose regulations as to better satisfy cbs audiences, I for one will be canceling Showtime if in fact CBS has some pull in a creative fashion on the current cast of writers.

The good thing about premium channels is they are allowed the freedom and flexibility to write the show how they see fit, and not under the microscope of the politically correct and the pg-13 crowd.

DEXTER, is the only reason I keep Showtime, and if it changes in any way to be more easily catered to the masses of CBS, then for me it will be bye showtime and hello a little bit of extra cash I pay just to watch it... In it's true unedited, and uncensored glory.

i dont think dexter should be brought to network tv. id love to not pay the money but it is actually worth the 20 bucks, i think so no complaints here. showtime and hbo shows are supposed to have gore, cursing and nudity. if people like us wanna see it thats why we pay money. putting it on regular tv and cutting out debra saying f*ck and Jack@ss is like taking away her identity. Also, I love LWord and no way in hell thats ever coming to network tv. There would be no show left lol. As for the gore in Dexter, there isnt much you see. Its basically up to the imagination. very few parts do u see anything at all. they keep it pretty clean for being on a network where they CAN cross boundaries.

Personaly i think if Dexter would become a network show, theres nothing good to come of it. ya the show is free now, but the "guilty pleasure" factor would be at risk. the wonderful dialoge between Doakes, Dexter and the entire miami police department would windel. and to ferther more drive the nail in the coffin, money, the creaters of the show, and showtime would loss money. if Dexter became a network show, there would be no need to continue paying for showtime. therefor resulting in cancelation.

Dexter doesnt need to be on network tv to gain hits, the word will spread by itself. i love Dexter, and i have told everyone i know that it is the best show i have ever seen. then from there the word spreads like a virus, from ear to ear. gainning popularity, even without advertising. also increasing the seasons DvD sales.

Dexter does not need to be changed. if Dexter would become a network show, i would no longer be "Perky Paul" i would be drivin by my "Dark Passenger" to become "petrified Paul"

Please leave Dexter on Showtime. I love the fact that it's commercial free, even though you can't run to the bathroom till it's over :)

I agree with someone who said the opening credits are the most disturbing, however cleverly done. The rest of the bloody scenes are not bloody at all, you see him get to work, but you don't actually see the deed. Please don't fix it - it aint broke, morons!!!!

Why not come up with some original programming, or see if you can take over Medium, which NBC continues to disrespect. Now everyone's jumping on the psychic bandwagon when Medium was one of the forerunners and, in my opinion, a great show.

I can just imagine the reaction of the Parents Television Council and similar groups to having a show like "Dexter" on broadcast TV. If for no other reason than that I think that CBS should do it!

Dexter would work fine on network TV but I really don't see Californication working. After editing it for primetime, it would be a 15 minute show!

I actually don't notice the difference that much on Dead Like Me, I don't know what you think is wrong with it.

Les Moonves is a scumbag for suggesting that pay-cable-only shows should be *moved* to network tv. This makes no sense, because the editing of storylines and other aspects are only the beginning.

The reason why shows like Dexter and Brotherhood are so good is because the writers are free to spin a story that isn't interfered with as it would be on network tv. Anyone who thinks that these shows' storylines won't be affected by the politics and standards of network tv IS SIMPLY DELUSIONAL.

I hope to God that this doesn't happen. Leave these wonderful shows alone.
